This noticemust be given at <strong>the</strong> register office (or o<strong>the</strong>r officenominated by <strong>the</strong> local authority) for <strong>the</strong> area inwhich <strong>the</strong> couple have lived for more that sevenclear days.if <strong>the</strong> couple live within <strong>Torbay</strong> <strong>the</strong>y will need togive <strong>the</strong>ir notices at <strong>Torbay</strong> register office. pleaseteleph<strong>on</strong>e 01803 207130 to make an appointmentto do this.if <strong>on</strong>e or both of <strong>the</strong> couple is a n<strong>on</strong> eec citizen,<strong>the</strong>n special rules may apply – please c<strong>on</strong>tact yourlocal register office for additi<strong>on</strong>al informati<strong>on</strong>.you will both need to bring <strong>the</strong> following evidenceof identity with you to <strong>the</strong> appointment:for british citizens, <strong>the</strong> evidence of nati<strong>on</strong>ality thatmust be produced will be ei<strong>the</strong>r a legally validbritish passport or a full birth certificate. prior to1983, a pers<strong>on</strong> born in <strong>the</strong> uk obtained britishcitizenship automatically. for a pers<strong>on</strong> born in <strong>the</strong>uk after 1 January 1983, nati<strong>on</strong>ality is dependentup<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> nati<strong>on</strong>ality of <strong>the</strong> parents. a pers<strong>on</strong> whoproduces a birth certificate showing <strong>the</strong>y wereborn in <strong>the</strong> uk <strong>on</strong> or after that date should beasked for a british passport or a naturalisati<strong>on</strong>/registrati<strong>on</strong> certificate from <strong>the</strong> home office.if this cannot be produced, evidence of <strong>the</strong>nati<strong>on</strong>ality of <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> parents (ei<strong>the</strong>r birthcertificate or passport) will be needed. if <strong>the</strong>parents were married at <strong>the</strong> time of <strong>the</strong> birth,a child can take nati<strong>on</strong>ality from ei<strong>the</strong>r parent.if unmarried, nati<strong>on</strong>ality is taken from <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r.it follows that if <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r was born in <strong>the</strong> ukprior to 1.1.1983 she would be a british citizen andso would <strong>the</strong> child. if <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r was not british,evidence of <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r’s british nati<strong>on</strong>ality and proofof marriage is required to establish <strong>the</strong> britishnati<strong>on</strong>ality of <strong>the</strong> child.plus two o<strong>the</strong>r forms of identificati<strong>on</strong> i.e. bankstatement, utility bill, driving licence.after notice has been given <strong>the</strong>re is a 15 daywaiting period before <strong>the</strong> authority for marriagecan be issued and <strong>the</strong> marriage can take place.The authority is valid for 12 m<strong>on</strong>ths and isrestricted to <strong>the</strong> venue for which it is issued.if <strong>the</strong> authority expires before <strong>the</strong> cerem<strong>on</strong>ycan take place or you wish to change <strong>the</strong> venue,new notices will have to be given.in order to get married, couples must be over 18(or provide evidence of parental/guardian c<strong>on</strong>sentif aged 16 or 17), not closely related to each o<strong>the</strong>r,be free to marry <strong>on</strong>e ano<strong>the</strong>r (i.e. not in an existingmarriage or civil partnership.)7www.riviera -weddings.co.uk
