Please send information or story ideas to: screditor@centurylink.net or mail to: PO Box 401, Crane, Missouri Animal Of The Week For May 17: Prairie Mole Cricket Species: Prairie mole cricket Scientific name: Gryllotalpa major Nicknames: None Claim to fame: The prairie mole cricket has become a symbol of vanishing prairie habitat in Missouri and in the Midwest. This insect, which is the largest of all North American crickets, was thought to be extirpated from Missouri before it was found on a prairie near Nevada in 1986. It has since been discovered on other prairies in southern and western parts of the state. Prairie mole crickets are known for the unique way they use their burrows to amplify their calls. Species status: In Missouri, it presently has a state endangerment classification of S3, which means there are factors which make it vulnerable to extirpation. (The state endangerment classification scale runs from S5, which covers species that have secure and stable populations, to S1, which applies to critically imperiled species.) First discovered: The first scientific description of the prairie mole cricket was written by the Swiss entomologist and mineralogist Henri de Saussure in 1874. Family matters: Prairie mole crickets belong to the family Gryllotalpidae, a group of insects known as the mole crickets. There are a number of mole cricket species around the world, all of which spend most of their time underground (hence the name “mole”). Prairie mole crickets belong to the sub-order Grylloidea, which consists of the “true” crickets. Crickets resemble grasshoppers (sub-order Caelifera) in body form, but there are several differences in physiology and mannerisms. One of the primary differences is most crickets are active at night and grasshoppers are active during the day. Crickets also have longer antennae than grasshoppers. Length: Prairie mole crickets are between two and three inches long. Diet: Prairie mole crickets are omnivores, feeding on grubs, worms, roots and grasses. Weight: not available D i s t i n g u i s h i n g characteristics: Prairie mole crickets are brownish in color. Their front tibia (leg-like appendages) has large claws that are used for digging. The most noticeable characteristic of prairie mole crickets is the harsh buzzing sound the males make by rubbing their wings together. These sounds are made even more noticeable by the burrows from which they’re emitted. Prairie mole crickets excavate elaborate burrows, but the most unique aspect of these tunnels is their entrance. Male prairie mole crickets create a hornshaped entrance and further enhance the burrow’s opening by smoothing and polishing the walls. During mating season, males issue their calls from inside these burrows. Entomologists theorize the shaping and texturing the males do to their burrows help amplify the sound of their calls. Prairie mole cricket calls have been heard at distances of more than 1300 feet. In Missouri, most of this species’ calling occurs in late May. Life span: three to four years Habitat: Prairie mole crickets occur in tall grass prairies and prefer dry areas. It will not tolerate plowing or heavy grazing. Life cycle: Prairie mole crickets, like other species of mole crickets spend almost all of their time underground. Because of this, there is much that is not known about this creature’s life cycle. In late spring (May to early June), the males begin to call from their burrows. These calls attract females to the burrows. Mating occurs and the females lay their eggs in the burrows. It is thought the females may stay with the eggs and care for them, and the resulting hatched nymphs, for part of the summer. It is thought prairie mole crickets require a year or more to develop. Missouri Department Of Conservation By Francis Skalicky For generations of Missouri farmers, an enjoyable sign that spring was transitioning into summer was the crisp, clear call of a meadowlark perched on a nearby fencepost. However, that call is becoming alarmingly less common throughout the region. Many people are familiar with the decrease of prairie chickens throughout much of the central U.S. and most have also heard about the steadily worsening quail situation for the same area. However, unless you’re a birding enthusiast, you’re likely unaware of the downward spiral of eastern meadowlark numbers. This decline may be surprising to some because these yellowbreasted birds can still be seen in pastures, meadows and hayfields across southwest Missouri. However, data shows this bird’s melodic call is definitely being heard with less frequency. The eastern meadowlark ranks sixth on the National Audubon Society’s list of top 20 common North American birds in decline. According to surveys, the continent’s eastern meadowlark numbers have dropped a whopping 72 percent in the last 40 years. The reasons for this drop are similar to those associated with the aforementioned prairie chicken and quail: Urban development, changes in farming practices and the increasing prevalence of exotic grass species have all played roles in reducing areas where native grasses are thriving. Biologists theorize these land-use changes are the reasons populations of eastern meadowlarks and a number of other grassland species are declining. Eastern meadowlarks are birds of open areas. They can be found in hayfields, pastures, prairies and other areas where the dominant vegetation is tall grass. They belong to the Icteridae family, which means bird experts don’t consider them larks. “True larks” belong to the Alaudidae family – predominantly an Old World group of species. It’s thought meadowlarks received their names because of the way they occasionally deliver songs in flight, much like England’s skylarks. If you’re thinking why should we care about a colorful, but seemingly inconsequential songbird, consider this: Improving habitat for meadowlarks has multiple wildlife benefits. You’re not just making things better for meadowlarks. The eastern meadowlark is just one creature in a rich mosaic of birds, reptiles, mammals and amphibians that make up a grassland ecosystem. So whether you go in search of quail with a shotgun or songbirds with a camera; help one species and you help them all. In many cases, management for grassland species doesn’t only benefit wild creatures that use the habitat – it helps domestic ones, too. Using native warm-season grasses as part of a rotational grazing system provides forage that is higher in nutrition during summer than cool-season grasses such as fescue. If it’s cut and baled at the proper time, it can also provide highquality hay without doing much damage to the habitat needs of wildlife.
