Alderwoman’s Attorney Says
Videotaped Evidence Will Clear His Client
The attorney for Crane
Two Women
Charged With
Burglary
By: Kathee Sanchez-Baird
Two women from Springfield
have been charged with burglary
after they were allegedly
caught with stolen property
shortly after a residential
burglary on Reno Springs
Road.
Telisha Marie Fletcher,
34, and Autumn Shalottie
Chambers, 21, were arrested on
May 7th and charged with two
counts of burglary in Stone
County.
Acting on a tip from
authorities in Greene County,
Stone County deputies began
searching for an older model
black Mitsubishi that was
believed to be casing houses
along the Stone/Christian
County line.
Shortly thereafter, a residential
burglary was reported at 13218
Reno Springs Road. As deputies
were investigating the burglary,
a Christian County Deputy
noticed a black Mitsubishi
matching the suspects
description parked in the drive
of an unoccupied residence on
State Highway 176 in Christian
County near the Stone County
line. At that location, a female
suspect was observed at the door
to that residence while a second
female suspect remained in the
vehicle.
As a deputy approached
the vehicle, he noticed tools
commonly used during
burglaries on the ground near
the vehicle. On making contact
with the vehicle occupant, the
deputy saw numerous items,
including two laptop computers,
that were reported stolen in the
Reno Springs Road burglary.
Christian County Deputies
released the vehicle and suspects
to Stone County Detectives.
A search warrant was sought
and issued for the vehicle. During
the search, detectives recovered
several articles allegedly stolen
from 13218 Reno Springs Road
and recovered additional articles
including a cloth bag that had a
name and address tag affixed.
The address was listed as 489
Shop Hollow Road. While the
vehicle was still being searched,
a property owner at 489 Shop
Hollow Road reported a burglary
and listed the bag as stolen.
Fletcher and Chambers are
jailed on $50,000 bond each.
Elmore and COMET turned
over the evidence they had
collected to a judge who issued
a search warrant for the business
on May 9th. That warrant was
executed at 1:30 p.m. on May
10th.
The manager of the store,
Aman Pasricha, 29, has been
charged with promoting
gambling.
According to the probable
cause statement used as the
basis of the charge, undercover
officers visited the store on May
3rd and placed cash in the slot
machines and a short time later
cashed out and took the ticket
to the cashier who paid them
in cash from the store register.
“Pasricha told us the more we
play the better the chances of
winning.”
“We seized the two machines
and the US currency inside of
it. We also located an audit slip
dated April 24, 2012, showing
that machine #1 had taken in
a total of $2198.00 and paid
out a total of $1896.00 with a
grand total in being $8839.00
and grand total paid out had
been $4736.55. A second audit
slip from machine #2 dated
April 24, 2012, showed a total
of $455.00 in and $415.70
paid and and a grand total of
$5270.00 paid in and a grand
total of $1311.00 paid out.”
Seized were two electronic
gambling devices, several
hundred dollars in U.S.
Currency and other items of
evidentiary value.
There was one other person
in the store at the time of the
raid. That person was playing
one of the illegal machines,
according to Elmore. At this
time it is unknown if charges
will be pursued against that
person.
Officers with the Stone
County Sheriff’s Office and
the Crane Police Department
assisted COMET officers in the
execution of the warrant.
Pasricha is being held on
Teenager From Reeds
Spring Killed In Horific Accident
By: Kathee Sanchez-Baird
A teenager from Branson
West who was late for curfew
after attending a birthday party
was killed in a “horrific” crash
Tuesday night about 4-and-a-half
miles south of his hometown.
Seventeen year-old Mason
Weitzel missed a curve on DD
Highway and his car slammed
into two trees before bursting into
flames, according to Eric Nielsen
with the Southern Stone County
Fire Protection District. “He
had called his mom and told her
While he has felt the call to
seek public office for a while
now, Scobee says he respected
the job that Kenneth Booth, who
died while he was in office, was
doing and didn’t want to run
against him.
Governor Jay Nixon appointed
Jim Huy, who is also running for
Northern Commissioner, about a
year and a half ago to serve the
remainder of Booth’s term.
Scobee says the system current
commissioners are using “is a
really good method and system
of doing things. I don’t see
myself making any big changes
with the way things are done. I
don’t believe in cutting people-
-I have seen first hand what
happens when you cut people.”
“The two biggest budgets
in the county are the Sheriff’s
(Office) and Road and Bridge
(Department).” Scobee’s father,
George Scobee, was sheriff in
Stone County in the 80’s and
he says he admired the way his
father struggled to stay within
the confines of his budget while
still giving the community the
best service possible. “I believe
the Sheriff’s Office should be
allowed to have enough money
to do their job properly and the
Road and Bridge Department
has two excellent foremen at this
time.”
Noting dwindling tax revenues
Scobee says, “We have to be
able to hold our head above
water and not go backwards.
I believe the knowledge and
training I received at MoDot has
prepared me to serve as Northern
Commissioner.”
“You can speculate about what
you’d do, but you’re not really
going to know until you get in
there. This job would be a step up
for me, and I understand its not
the same kind of job I had with
MoDot. It would be a challenge
for anyone - but I’m up for it.”
Scobee has been married to his
wife, Debbie, who is the Stone
Scobee Cont...
he was running late. Excessive
speed was a factor.”
Weitzel, who was a student
and baseball player at Reeds
Spring, was wearing a seatbelt.
“Our crews had to cut it off
of him.” One of those crew
members attended high school
with Weitzel, according to
Nielsen.
“This is a very tragic incident
for our area.....kids need to slow
down.”
County Circuit Clerk (which is
a state held office), for 30 years.
They have two children and four
grandchildren and he serves as
a Deacon at Keystone Baptist
Church.
“The only big change I would
like to see is the name plate on the
front of the desk of the Northern
Commissioner,” said Scobee.
Next week we will have an
interview with Robert Stone
who is also running for Northern
Commissioner.
Alderwoman Cont..........
arriving officers came and began
to shine their flashlights into
the White’s cars, in the cutilage
of their house. They did not
have any logical reason, much
less probable cause, to do so.
They certainly did not have a
warrant.”
“We don’t have an issue with
the Crane police officer,” said
Wiley.
The videotape does not show
anything that happened during
the traffic stop and arrest of
Thomas Barnett and it begins
near the carport of the White’s
home. At one point Jessica White
asks a deputy who is attempting
to cuff her husband, “who are
you...why are you doing this.”
“What happened next had
nothing to do with interfering
with an officer. It had nothing
to do with resisting arrest,” said
Wiley.
Wiley says Jessica White was
defending her family, when she
hit the officer in the back of the
head. “I believe it was a reflex
action when she saw they were
being hurt.”
He says his clients suffered
broken ribs, torn ligaments
Ruby’s
Bark Box
Bark, bark from Ruby.
Well, Mother’s Day has come
and gone. I hope all you Mothers
had a wonderful day.
A couple of Mothers I know
got nice hanging plants, cards
and a couple of handmade, very
special framed Mother’s Day
cards with some little round
things, they are calling buttons.
I don’t understand the whole
thing but they sure are proud of
their framed buttons. BOL.
This story is about a family of
five; Dad, Mom, two girls and
their two year old dog named
Carrot, since she is reddish
colored and pretty small, about
10 pounds. (Smaller than I
am).
The family was in a park that
had a trail where a cliff was
below the peak. Carrot was on
a leash (retractable) that was
rated for 50 pounds. As they
were hiking up and reached the
peak of the cliff, Carrot saw a
chipmunk and began pulling on
the leash. You can almost guess
the rest. Yes, that 50 pound
rated leash broke and Carrot fell
about 100 feet off the cliff, and
bounced off the bottom trail and
fell another 10 feet into the water
below. There was no fence up to
protect anyone from a fall.
Both girls were screaming and
crying. Mom and the girls stood
by helpless while dad went down
below.
Several rescue vehicles arrived
and lifted Carrot from the water.
She was taken to a vet where
they x-rayed her. The vet said
she should not have survived the
fall. Carrot received treatment
for her injuries and sent on to
an Animal Hospital where she
had an MRI. Results from the
test showed a damaged vertebra.
An operation would be very
expensive, but if needed it would
be done. The vet wanted to try
medication and rest for Carrot
to see if she would improve on
her own. She can walk with the
help of a sling, so to make sure
she got the rest she needs, she
was crated for at least 20 hours
a day for four weeks.
She began to improve right
away and continues to do so.
Everyone says Carrot is tough
and she will recover.
The girls are so happy that
their dog is getting well. She
will be able to run and play
before to long. They know she
has determination, because she
somehow got to Missouri from
Georgia where she was adopted
into her present, forever family,
when she was about one year
old.
The leash company has been
contacted about the possibility
of a defect with their leash.
This is pretty scary to me,
since I am a dog, so if any of
my family walks me on a leash,
I will never run after a varmint
like that. – Maybe!!
What I like to do is dig into a
place in my yard where a mole
has been. I can make the dirt fly
and I love it. BOL. Don’t tell
this – but I have dug like that
and ended up having to take a
bath. That’s the only drawback
I have found about digging for
a mole. And by the way, I have
never dug one up, I don’t know
what I would do if I did. BOL.
Thank you for reading about
Carrot the dog!!
Adopt, Spay and Neuter.
Bark at you next week!!
LOOSE DENTURES?
MINI DENTAL
IMPLANT SYSTEM
How can mini dental implants help
denture wearers?
The Mini Dental Implant System uses 1.8
mm mini dental implants, which are about
the size of wooden toothpicks, and are
gently placed into the front of the patients
upper and/or lower jaw. It is a relatively
painless procedure that only requires a mild
anesthesia. Your denture is then carefully
adjusted to fit securely onto the mini implants.
The result? A tight fitting denture, that
allows you to speak and eat with confidence.
All performed in less than two hours: Less
Invasive, Less Discomfort, Less Healing time
and HALF the cost of traditional implants.
Crider Arrested
By: Kathee Sanchez-Baird
A third person has now been
charged with murder in connection
to the February disappearance of a
Highlandville man.
On May 7th, Stone County
prosecutor Matt Selby charged
Eugene “Gene” K. Crider, 42, with
first-degree murder. Crider was
charged in March, with tampering
with physical evidence in connection
to the disappearance of Carl Glenn
Anderson.
Crider lived with Teri Dean-
Morrison and Cheryl Crawford at 263
Akita Run near Hootentown. In early
March investigators found blood
throughout the home that lab tests
determined belonged to Anderson.
Anderson was last seen at a party at
the Hootentown address, according
to authorities.
According to the probable cause
statement filed against Crider, “On 02-
27-12 Eugene admitted to a witness
that Carl Anderson was beaten to
death with a hammer and that during
the attack he broke the windows and
door when he (Anderson) attempted
to flea (sic). Eugene also admitted that
he disposed of Carl Anderson’s body
by burning it and he asked to use her
vehicle to move his remains.”
In the probable cause statement’s
filed against Dean-Morrison and
Crawford, who are also charged with
first-degree murder, investigators
said that the home was cleaned up
and some of its contents were burned,
moved and/or replaced in an effort to
conceal Anderson’s murder.
Stone County Detective Matt
Maggard writes in the newest
probable cause affidavit, “Eugene
Crider was aware that evidence of
Marionville
Farmers Market
The New Marionville Farmer’s
Market will open Sat. May 5 at 5
Implantology is a specialty area not recognized by the ADA that requires no
specific educational training to advertise this service.
Anderson being murdered was found
and that evidence that he had helped
dispose of the body was located. On
03-06-12 a shovel and gas can were
observed in the back of his pickup.
On 03-07-12 he left the residence
and on 03-08 the truck was parked
and left at Wal-Mart in Springfield to
avoid law enforcement from finding
it. Eugene later had Krystal Buras
remove and hide items from his truck
including the shovel.”
Last month, Krystal Nicole Buras,
30, of Spring, Texas, was arrested and
charged with tampering with physical
evidence when she attempted to visit
Crider at the Stone County jail.
When Crider, Crawford and Dean-
Morrison were arrested near Lake
Ozark on March 9th, their cell phones
were confiscated and proved to be a
valuable tool in pinpointing the areas
the trio had been.
One of the places the suspects
had spent a considerable amount of
time at was the rural property of Earl
Kearney off of Highway OO near
Reeds Spring. Kearney is a former
boyfriend of Dean-Morrison.
A search warrant was granted
on March 19th for investigator’s
to search Kearney property. It was
during a second search of Kearney’s
property on March 21st that detectives
found human remains in a pond. The
Missouri Highway Patrol Crime Lab
determined that the remains belonged
to Anderson.
Crider, Crawford and Dean-
Morrison remain jailed on $1 million
dollars bond each. Crider is due back
in court on May 22nd.
Crawford and Dean-Morrison are
scheduled to have a dual preliminary
hearing on May 25th.
Animal Of The Week
For May 17: Prairie Mole Cricket
Species: Prairie mole
cricket
Scientific name: Gryllotalpa
major
Nicknames: None
Claim to fame: The prairie
mole cricket has become a
symbol of vanishing prairie
habitat in Missouri and in
the Midwest. This insect,
which is the largest of all
North American crickets, was
thought to be extirpated from
Missouri before it was found
on a prairie near Nevada
in 1986. It has since been
discovered on other prairies in
southern and western parts of
the state. Prairie mole crickets
are known for the unique
way they use their burrows to
amplify their calls.
Species status: In Missouri,
it presently has a state
endangerment classification
of S3, which means there
are factors which make it
vulnerable to extirpation.
(The state endangerment
classification scale runs from
S5, which covers species
that have secure and stable
populations, to S1, which
applies to critically imperiled
species.)
First discovered: The
first scientific description
of the prairie mole cricket
was written by the Swiss
entomologist and mineralogist
Henri de Saussure in 1874.
Family matters: Prairie
mole crickets belong to the
family Gryllotalpidae, a group
of insects known as the mole
crickets. There are a number
of mole cricket species around
the world, all of which spend
most of their time underground
(hence the name “mole”).
Prairie mole crickets belong
to the sub-order Grylloidea,
which consists of the “true”
crickets. Crickets resemble
grasshoppers (sub-order
Caelifera) in body form, but
there are several differences in
physiology and mannerisms.
One of the primary differences
is most crickets are active at
night and grasshoppers are
active during the day. Crickets
also have longer antennae than
grasshoppers.
Length: Prairie mole
crickets are between two and
three inches long.
Diet: Prairie mole crickets
are omnivores, feeding on
grubs, worms, roots and
grasses.
Weight: not available
D i s t i n g u i s h i n g
characteristics: Prairie mole
crickets are brownish in color.
Their front tibia (leg-like
appendages) has large claws
that are used for digging. The
most noticeable characteristic
of prairie mole crickets is the
harsh buzzing sound the males
make by rubbing their wings
together. These sounds are
made even more noticeable
by the burrows from which
they’re emitted. Prairie mole
crickets excavate elaborate
burrows, but the most unique
aspect of these tunnels is
their entrance. Male prairie
mole crickets create a hornshaped
entrance and further
enhance the burrow’s opening
by smoothing and polishing
the walls. During mating
season, males issue their calls
from inside these burrows.
Entomologists theorize the
shaping and texturing the
males do to their burrows help
amplify the sound of their
calls. Prairie mole cricket calls
have been heard at distances
of more than 1300 feet. In
Missouri, most of this species’
calling occurs in late May.
Life span: three to four
years
Habitat: Prairie mole
crickets occur in tall grass
prairies and prefer dry areas.
It will not tolerate plowing or
heavy grazing.
Life cycle: Prairie mole
crickets, like other species of
mole crickets spend almost
all of their time underground.
Because of this, there is much
that is not known about this
creature’s life cycle. In late
spring (May to early June),
the males begin to call from
their burrows. These calls
attract females to the burrows.
Mating occurs and the females
lay their eggs in the burrows.
It is thought the females may
stay with the eggs and care
for them, and the resulting
hatched nymphs, for part
of the summer. It is thought
prairie mole crickets require a
year or more to develop.
Missouri
Department Of
Conservation
By Francis Skalicky
For generations of Missouri
farmers, an enjoyable sign
that spring was transitioning
into summer was the crisp,
clear call of a meadowlark
perched on a nearby fencepost.
However, that call is becoming
alarmingly less common
throughout the region.
Many people are familiar
with the decrease of prairie
chickens throughout much of
the central U.S. and most have
also heard about the steadily
worsening quail situation for
the same area. However, unless
you’re a birding enthusiast,
you’re likely unaware of the
downward spiral of eastern
meadowlark numbers. This
decline may be surprising to
some because these yellowbreasted
birds can still be seen
in pastures, meadows and
hayfields across southwest
Missouri.
However, data shows this
bird’s melodic call is definitely
being heard with less frequency.
The eastern meadowlark
ranks sixth on the National
Audubon Society’s list of top
20 common North American
birds in decline. According to
surveys, the continent’s eastern
meadowlark numbers have
dropped a whopping 72 percent
in the last 40 years. The reasons
for this drop are similar to
those associated with the aforementioned
prairie chicken and
quail: Urban development,
changes in farming practices
and the increasing prevalence
of exotic grass species have
all played roles in reducing
areas where native grasses are
thriving. Biologists theorize
these land-use changes are the
reasons populations of eastern
meadowlarks and a number
of other grassland species are
declining.
Eastern meadowlarks are
birds of open areas. They can
be found in hayfields, pastures,
prairies and other areas where
the dominant vegetation is
tall grass. They belong to the
Icteridae family, which means
bird experts don’t consider
them larks. “True larks”
belong to the Alaudidae family
– predominantly an Old World
group of species. It’s thought
meadowlarks received their
names because of the way they
occasionally deliver songs in
flight, much like England’s
skylarks.
If you’re thinking why
should we care about a
colorful, but seemingly
inconsequential songbird,
consider this: Improving
habitat for meadowlarks has
multiple wildlife benefits.
You’re not just making things
better for meadowlarks. The
eastern meadowlark is just
one creature in a rich mosaic
of birds, reptiles, mammals
and amphibians that make
up a grassland ecosystem.
So whether you go in search
of quail with a shotgun or
songbirds with a camera; help
one species and you help them
all.
In many cases, management
for grassland species doesn’t
only benefit wild creatures
that use the habitat – it helps
domestic ones, too. Using
native warm-season grasses
as part of a rotational grazing
system provides forage that
is higher in nutrition during
summer than cool-season
grasses such as fescue. If it’s
cut and baled at the proper
time, it can also provide highquality
hay without doing
much damage to the habitat
needs of wildlife.
and agricultural benefits of
managing land for grassland
species can be found at your
Reeds Spring MO 65737 • 417-272-3527
Dear Readerville:
Thank you for being with us
again. Behind as usual – indeed.
Summer is here & I have a
picture from Christmas.. Not
my fault – well not all my fault.
Norma May, who retired from
Reeds Spring school, had one of
her family taken. But, it took a
while to make it to my door and
then it took a little longer to find
it again and get it out to all of you.
Greg & Norma May have taken
a less stressfull career path. They
now work with Amsol. Not sure
I can explain it, but give them a
call if you want more info on this
career change. James & Melissa
celebrated their 2 nd . wedding
anniversary. Melissa is taking
classes towards being a medical
technician. James is still serving
in the 135 th . Missouri Army
National Guard Band. Leigha
should graduate from Drury in
August. They have lots of pets.
Norma said her mom still mows
– cooks – cleans, etc. Norma
also said that James made a trip
to Washington DC as part of the
Ozarks Honor Flight and that her
mom got to go with him. Robert
& Linda are still living in St. Louis
and working with a disability
group. Mike is still working
with MODOT. Chris & Cindy
still live in Oklahoma. Skyler
is in the Marines. Roger works
with Kimberling City Plumbing
and Alicia works at SDC. Miss
Norma still works part time in
the music world, teaching for the
childrens’ choirs of Southwest
Missouri. Norma told me that
she still gets to spend a lot of time
at home, usually letting the cats
& dogs out, then in again, then
out – you know, door woman
for the pets. You get the picture
– HA! HA!
AND FINALLY – GOD
BLESS O.R. & MARY MAY
ON THEIR 70 TH . WEDDING
ANNIVERSARY. (I know, that’s
coming late too.)
Now, Cousin Norma May,
maybe if you start now & I start
now, we won’t be six months late
– You think? As you will see
in the picture, a family portrait,
Special Visitor
Neighbors Efton Pritchard &
his daughter Donna were coming
for a visit & when they arrived I
was duly surprised. They brought
Donna’s daughter Teresa. We
remised about days gone by. I
had not seen Teresa for many
years. When she was born, I said
she was my God child, but she
Reeds Spring Jct.
always called me her Fairy God
Mother. It was great to see all of
them. Teresa, hope to see you
again soon.
Special Annoucement
Just received in the mail an
invitation to Chris O’Day’s
wedding taking place in July in
California. Sure wish I could go,
but health problems will keep
me in Missouri. More on the
wedding after it occurs and I get
pictures.
National Day Of Prayer
Waiting on some pictures still,
but I do have several taken by
Bert O’Day – the Landmarks
Apostolic Church and Rob
Barringer. I have elected to use 3
or so at a time if the paper permits
an then we will do a full cover. It
is too good to glide over it. More
in a few weeks.
Food For Thought: 2012
National Prayer by Dr. David
Jeremiah:
Heavenly Father, every gift
7 perfect gift comes from you.
You are a faithful God & Your
mercy endures forever. You
have promised to bless the nation
that trusts in You. Our currency
proclaims “In God We Trust,”
but in our culture we are far from
You.
In the words of the prophet
Daniel, “We have sinned &
committed iniquity, we have
done wickedly and rebelled,
even by departing from Your
precepts & Your judgements.”
We come before You once more,
seeking Your forgiveness &
mercy. You, O God, are our only
hope….Hear our prayer &, for
Your Honor’s sake, shine Your
face upon this nation. Give our
leaders the desire to seek Your
wisdom & the courage to follow
Your guidance…& watch over
the Men & women of our armed
forces as they sacrifice for the
cause of freedom. We give Yu
thanks for all You have done for
us, and we earnestly pray that
You will help us become, once
again, a nation whose God is
the Lord. In the name of Your
Son, and our Savior, we pray this
prayer. Amen.
For Your Funny Bone:
I have been to a lot of places,
but I have never been in Cahoots.
Apparently you can’t go there
alone. You have to be in Cahoots
with someone. I’ve also never
been in Cognito, either. I hear no
one recognizes you there. I have,
however, been in Sane. They
don’t have an airport, you have
to be driven there. I’ve made
several trips & am planning one
in the near future.
Death From Overheating:
Never
Leave Your Child
Alone In A Car
The Stone County Health
Department wants your family
to enjoy the summer months
by making wise decisions
to stay safe during the hot,
humid weather. According to
Jan Null, CCM, Professor of
Meteorology at San Francisco
State University, last year there
were a total of 33 infant and
child fatalities in the United
States due to hyperthermia
after they were left in hot cars,
trucks, vans and SUV’s. From
2000-2011 there have been at
least a total of 456 of these
needless tragedies. Over fifty
(50) percent of these deaths
were caused by caregivers
forgetting the child was left in
the vehicle, while thirty (30)
percent were due to children
playing in the vehicle.
Children under four years of
age are especially at risk for
heat related-illness such as heat
exhaustion, heat stroke, and
hyperthermia. Heat is much
more dangerous to children
than it is to adults. When left in
a hot vehicle, a young child’s
core body temperature may
increase three to five times
faster than that of an adult,
making them more susceptible
to heat illness. Heat illness is
divided into three (3) phases;
the mildest form is heat stress,
the physical discomfort and
physiologic strain as a result
of a hot environment; next is
heat exhaustion or heat stroke,
a mild to moderate illness
associated with dehydration
and a core body temperature
ranging for 99 ̊ F to 104 ̊ F.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion
include intense thirst,
weakness, discomfort, anxiety,
dizziness, fainting, and
headache; finally, heat stroke
is a life-threatening illness
characterized by an elevated
core body temperature over
104 ̊ F with central nervous
system dysfunction resulting
in delirium, convulsions,
coma, organ shutdown, and
death. (Bouchama A. Knochel
JP, Heat Stroke, N Eng J Med.
2002-346)
The temperature inside a
vehicle can increase over 3 ̊
F every five (5) minutes, with
the majority of the temperature
rise occurring within the first
15 – 30 minutes. After an
hour, the temperature inside
the vehicle can differ from
the outside temperature by
45 ̊ F or more. The time it
takes for the temperature to
rise to a dangerous level in a
vehicle does not decrease if
windows are left cracked/open
or if the air conditioner has
been running; vehicle window
shades or windshield shades
do not make it safe to leave a
child inside. To protect your
children from heat-related
injury or illness, follow these
guidelines:
• NEVER LEAVE A
CHILD UNATTENDED IN
A VEHICLE. NOT EVEN
FOR A MINUTE!
• IF YOU SEE A
CHILD UNATTENDED IN
A HOT VEHICLE CALL 9-
1-1.
•Be sure that all occupants
leave the vehicle when
unloading. Don't overlook
sleeping babies.
•Always lock your car and
ensure children do not have
access to keys or remote entry
devices. If a child is missing,
check the car first, including
the trunk. Teach your children
that vehicles are never to be
used as a play area.
•If your vehicle has childresistant
locks, teach older
children how to unlock the
doors if they unintentionally
get locked in. To prevent
children from being locked in
the trunk, ask your dealer about
getting your car retrofitted
with an interior trunk release.
•Keep a stuffed animal in the
carseat and when the child is
put in the seat place the animal
in the front with the driver.
• Or place your purse or
briefcase in the back seat as a
reminder that you have your
child in the car.
• Make "look before you
leave" a routine whenever you
get out of the car.
• Have a plan that your
childcare provider will call you
if your child does not show up
for school.
The Stone County Health
Department warns parents not
to underestimate the danger
of overheating in parked cars.
Prevention of heat illness in
children and other potentially
injuries are straightforward;
do not leave them in the car.
Seaman Cont...
has taken a number of dramatic
twists and turns in the fiveand-a-half
years since it was
committed, including a trip to
the Missouri Supreme Court.
It was Zack Stewart,
Seaman’s brother-in-law, who
was originally charged for the
November 29, 2006, shooting
death of fifty three year-old
Dulin, a resident of Hurley. The
Missouri Supreme Court ruled in
2010 that Stewart deserved a new
trial based on evidence collected
at the crime scene and evidence
uncovered while he was jailed.
During Stewart’s trial in
Greene County, where the case
was moved to on a change of
venue, a family member of
Dulin’s told Selby that a hat that
he introduced into evidence as
belonging to Dulin was not his.
Selby asked the crime lab to put
an Alpha rush on the hat during
trial and DNA on the cap came
back with a hit for Seaman’s
DNA. Even with that evidence,
the jury convicted the then 19
year-old Stewart.
As Selby was preparing to retry
Stewart, he received “bombshell”
evidence that led him to dismiss
charges against Stewart and
charge Seaman. That evidence
came from John Mills who was
offered a deal of immunity if he
would tell investigator’s what
happened the night Dulin was
murdered.
What Mills told them stunned
everyone involved in the deal...
he was the second man Dulin
referred to as he lay dying in a
recorded 9-1-1 call.
“That was a bombshell.
We thought that he had some
knowledge, but we didn’t think
he was a participant,” said
Selby.
Mills told investigators
he witnessed Seaman gun Dulin
down that cool fall night because
they wanted to continue to party.
The following is the
complete unadulterated written
statement made by Mills
to investigator’s and it has never
before been made public. It was
obtained by this reporter by a
Sunshine request:
The night of David Dulin’s
murder started out with Tim
Seamon (sic) and myself drinking
vodka at Ritchy and Amanda’s
house. After Ritchy and Amanda
went to sleep Tim and I sat up
talking tying to figure out how
to get some meth. Tim stated he
could get some meth in California
if we could get the gas money to
go. I stated why don’t we just
rob somebody. I told him I could
get a gun and that we should just
shoot someone in the head and
take their money. So we decided
to go to my dad’s house to get a
gun. We drove to my dads in my
ford tarous (sic) and I went in to
get a gun. My dad woke up to let
me in and then he went to use the
restroom. While he was in the
restroom I went in his bedroom
and got a 22 caliber pistol out
from under his pillow and stuck
it in my waistband. I told my dad
I was going to stay the night at
Ritchy’s and I left. When we were

Seaman Cont...
going back toward Ritchy’s, Tim
navigated on which way for me to
go. We wound up goin to David
Dulins and pulling in the drive by
his SUV. We got out of the car and
I stuck the gun in between my left
arm and ribcage. Tim walked in
front of me and David Dulin met us
at the front door and invited us in.
We came in and sat on his couch
& Tim started talking with
him. Tim was talking something
about death and dying then he
gestured to me to give him the gun.
He was in between me and Dulin
- I let the gun slide down from
between my arm and ribs and slid
it to him on the couch. After that
Tim stood up and said everybody’s
gotta die sometime and pointed
the pistol at David while he was
in his chair and shot him in the
head. David got up with another
22 pistol and Tim dropped my
dads pistol and they spun around
and they wound up in the floor
with Tim on top. About four shots
went off from Davids gun. I picked
up my dads gun off the floor and
shot David in the side of the head
and in his stomach. After that
Tim got up and said lets get out
of here. We ran out and got in my
car and headed back to Ritchy and
Amandas. When we got there Tim
said we need to burn our clothes
so we did. Then we washed our
hands with bleach. Later on we
was sitting in the bedroom and I
seen Tim had taken Davids pistol
with a laser light on it. Then next
morning we hid the guns in the
woods but I had to take my dads
back because he was gonna report
it stolen.
A list of items is the last page of
the statement;
1. A 22 9 shot revolver-took
it back to dads house
1. I was wearing a black
jacket that said AAA concrete and
a tan Mills concrete hat
1. Tim was wearing a ball
cap & flannel jacket
1. I knew ahead of time that
we were gonna kill somebody
Selby has said in the past that
the prosecution and conviction of
Stewart, who was innocent, “is a
prosecutor’s worst nightmare.”
When Selby addressed the court
at Seaman’s sentencing he said,
“He (Seaman) stood idly by in
the shadows while his brother-inlaw
was tried and convicted of a
crime he didn’t commit. I regret
for the family, the state and the
community that he (Mills) is not
going to be prosecuted for David
Dulin’s murder. Referencing the
deal he made with Mills, “It did
tell us we know for sure who killed
David Dulin but we also now know
who didn’t kill Mr. Dulin.”
Seaman’s attorney Chris Hatley
asked the court to sentence his
client to 15 years in prison. “He
(Seaman) never stood here and
said he killed David Dulin...it was
John Mills. He never stood here
and said he shot David Dulin or
robbed Mr. Dulin. He never came
forward, but neither did John
Mills. That doesn’t mean he is not
guilty in the eyes of the law.”
Mills was sentenced last month
to 7 years in prison on various
weapons charges unrelated to
Dulin’s murder. His 5 year
probation for domestic violence
was also revoked at that time. The
judge in that case was unable to
take into consideration anything
having to do with Dulin’s murder.
Hatley also took aim at the
immunity deal, “I believe it when
Mr. Selby says if he had it to do all
over again he wouldn’t.”
Under state law, Seaman must
serve at least 85 percent of his
sentence before he is eligible for
parole.
Alderwoman Cont...
a website with the video www.
stonecountypolicebrutality.com
Wiley refutes the claim made
by an officer who wrote in a
probable cause statement that
Jessica White was allegedly
intoxicated. “I wish Sheriff Hill
and his deputies had taken the
time to interview the numerous
witnesses to this event. In
that light, when we are done
investigating, we will release our
side of the story and the videos
that clearly refute the outrageous
comments contained in Sheriff
Hill’s press release.”
“My clients wish to state clearly
that the majority of officers who
were present on Saturday were
well-mannered and pleasant.
But the ones who participated
in these vicious and senseless
assaults while having no reason
to be on client’s property deserve
to answer for their actions.”
83 rd Billings High
Alumni/Reunion
Saturday, May 19, 2012
Only weeks out for the annual
Billings High Alumni Reunion.
Saturday, May 19 th . Registration
begins at 6:00 PM with deli trays,
and a time of reacquainting with
other alumni. Always the 3 rd
Saturday of May, in the COMMONS
AREA of the Billings Public School
GYMNASIUM. The Reunion will
be a time of honoring all graduates,
honoring those classes having
reunions with a time of taking
pictures, as we are entertained by
our ALUMNI.
Please register your class if you
are having a class reunion. Many
from the various classes have
indicated their intent to be present
for the 2012 Alumni Reunion.
Special tables will be set for those
having a reunion, provided we
know. With the recent storms,
deaths and accidents this past year,
it creates within the alumni, the need
for continued friendships, even if it
is just once a year.
Special recognitions to those who
have traveled the farthest, the oldest,
most newly wed and our veterans.
First, the class of 2012 will be
honored, as the newest honored
Billings alumni.
Excited about alumni! Yes, to
be a proud honored graduate of
Billings High is a prize to hold
dear, a special privilege to be a part
of history with the public school
system in America. A minimal
donation, of $5.00 or more to assist
in defraying overhead at registration
is appreciated.
Don Phillips Capital Report
Budget Passed
The budget passed just in time
and the regular legislative
session is ending on Friday,
May 18 th . The 24 billion dollar,
balanced budget provided many
challenges. Most Missourians
agree we need to have a lean,
efficient spending policy, but the
rub comes as to what programs;
agencies and organizations suffer
the worst of the trimming. It’s a
difficult decision yet one that has
to be made.
The General Assembly (House
and Senate combined) was able
to restore three million dollars in
tourism money and 28 million
dollars in supplemental money
for the Blind Medical Program.
We also restored 106 million
dollars in cuts to higher education
that were originally removed by
Governor Nixon.
There was an emphasis on
services for our seniors,
veterans, low-income families
and Medicaid funding. We were
also able to give a 2% raise to
state employees earning less
than $70,000 a year. The budget
process involves many bills with
a variety of categories. I’m just
glad it’s over for this year!
I noticed that California, for
instance, is projecting a 16 billion
dollar shortfall. Those of us in
the Show Me State should be
pleased we’ve had the foresight
and leadership to avoid such a
situation!
Dred Scott Honored
This past Wednesday, Dred
Scott was inducted into the Hall
of Famous Missourians. In an
infamous Supreme Court case,
Dred Scott v. Sanford, aka; the
Dred Scott Decision, an African
American slave, living in
Missouri, sued for his freedom
in 1847. The U.S. Supreme
court ruled 10 yrs. later, in
1857, that no person of African
ancestry could ever become an
American citizen! Mr. Scott had
moved to Missouri, after being
sold to his Master, John Sanford.
Mr. Scott had previously lived
in the state of Illinois and the
territory of Wisconsin. After
Thursday, May 17, 2012 THE CRANE CHRONICLE/STONE COUNTY REPUBLICAN Page 9
the Supreme Court ruling, Dred
Scott remained a slave, although
the case brought focus to the
slavery issue and ultimately led
to its destruction.
My Bill
HB 1524 has a two-way shot
at passage. It’s included in
HB 1103 (that should be Truly
Agreed Upon and Finally
Passed this week). It’s also a
part of a four-part banking bill,
SB 635, however, due to many
amendments in the House; the
bill is now in “conference” and
will hopefully emerge “cleaned
up.” The bill, in either HB 1103
or SB 635, has a great chance of
becoming law and will arguably
be one of the most significant
pieces of legislation passed in
some time! It allows for a private
road maintenance agreement for
homeowners living on a privately
maintained road. This opens
the door for low interest rate
loans from secondary lending
institutions. It also brings up the
value of the property and makes
it easier to purchase or sell homes
because of the lower interest rate
loans.
The Final Week
This week concludes the regular
session of the 96 th General
Assembly for 2012. Friday at
6 p.m. will officially mark the
close of this session. Unless
the Governor calls for a special
session, we won’t be spending
a lot of time at the capitol the
remainder of the year. I’ll do a
session summary and share my
plans for after-session work,
within the district, in next week’s
report.
All-Hazards Alert Radios Can Save Lives
Stone County, Mo. – Severe
weather can strike virtually
without warning, leaving a
devastating path of destruction
and taking lives. Joplin last
year and the tornadoes in Stone
and Taney Counties this year are
solemn reminders. We are still
at equal risk for more tornadoes,
floods and ice storms just like
those experienced in southwest
Missouri in recent years.
Early warning is vital. With
the National Weather Service’s
technology and early notification
systems, the all-hazards alert
radios can provide families with
enough warning to take their
emergency kit and get to safety.
“Every second counts when
an emergency is threatening
your family,” says emergency
management director Tom
I hope all you mothers out there
had a great Mother’s Day. We
had a fun Mother’s Day contest
here at Heritage Harmony House
last Friday. We found out that
we have some very talented
mothers. We had a yodeling
mama, a hopping hip mom,
and one wigged out woman,
complete with royal blue hair,
not to mention the many other
mothers that participated.
I would also like to thank all
of you that have responded to
this column. We have added 4
new meals on wheels recipients
in Northern Stone County. Our
monthly total for meals delivered
to Stone County is up to 504.
Awesome!
Please remember that if you
know a senior who is 60 or
over that needs help with meals
or any other service, give me a
call at 417-678-5383. HHH is
open from 8:00am to 3:30pm,
Monday through Friday. We are
located just behind the hospital
in Aurora.
And don’t forget that May
is National Older Americans
Month and the theme is Never
Too Old To Play. So, get out and
have some fun this week!
Until next time….Lana
Outdoor sirens in some
communities warn people who are
outside, but they are not designed
to alert people inside buildings.
The all-hazards radios can alert
families, businesses, faith based
or civic organizations and other
groups inside a facility.
The radios are available at a
reasonable cost at many local
retailers, including Radio
Shack, Wal-Mart, Walgreens
and Price Cutter. They can also
be purchased from the American
Red Cross.
“As soon as you purchase a
radio, be sure you program it
appropriately for your warning
area and then test it,” adds
Martin. “We don’t want anyone
to discover in the middle of
a real emergency that their
all-hazards alert radio is not
working properly. When they are
programmed and used correctly,
these radios can save lives.”
2012 Draw Boat Winners
Congratulations To Kris And Kevin Bowling
The highlight of this wonderful
event was when a little boy
named Conner took center stage
for the drawing of the 2012 Nitro
Z6 bassboat with a value of over
$20,000. Conner, a former Wish
recipient and cancer survivor
had the entire crowd on their
toes while he dug into the bucket
of key bobs and later pulled out
the winning bobber belonging
to Kris and Kevin Bowling of
Aurora and Crane, Missouri. The
Kansas Speedway tickets, also
drawn by Conner, were awarded
Thursday, May 17, 2012 THE CRANE CHRONICLE/STONE COUNTY REPUBLICAN Page 11
Table Rock Lake Squadron 147
Saturday, May 12th, 2012
started out with an overcast sky
and looking as if it may shower.
But members of Table Rock
Lake Squadron 147 of the Civil
Air Patrol had been invited by
the Tri-Lakes Radio Controlled
Aircraft Club to come out for a
picnic and to fly radio controlled
planes, so 13 members of the
Squadron met at the field at 9:00
a.m.
After just a short time, the
weather cleared and the sun came
shining through and it made a
great day for flying. Jim Haney,
President of Tri-Lakes RC Club
was on hand to welcome the
squadron members along with
several other fliers from the club.
Among some of the planes were
a B-25J and a Hobbistar FAR60
MK11, all of which beautifully
made and exciting to watch in
action.
Throughout the entire day,
there was only one RC plane
casualty and that was a Trainer
belonging to Mr. Howard Shire,
an instructor at the Club. His
Trainer was circling the sky when
its battery died, and ultimately it
crashed into the concrete drive
severely damaging the aircraft.
In speaking with Mr. Shine, he
said simply, “Sometimes that
happens.” But we sure wish it
hadn’t happened to his plane. He
was upbeat about it and indicated
he would begin rebuilding
immediately. Better luck to him
next time.
At lunchtime, the Civil Air
Patrol was asked to raise the flag
which is always a moving and
heartwarming sight to see. Lt.
Col. Ed Leonard and Cadet 2nd
Lt. Aiden Olivea had the honor
of raising the flag with others
standing at attention or saluting.
After the flag ceremony, a hot
dog picnic and flying show took
place, as several of the members
of the RC Club performed with
their planes. Members of the
CAP were also able to fly several
planes and a once cloudy day
turned into a sun filled and fun
filled event.
Members from the CAP
attending are: (At the flagpole)
Cadet 2nd Lt. Olivea and Lt. Col.
Leonard, and in formation (left
to right are) Cadet Woodruff,
Cadet Cooper, Cadet Nelson,
Capt. Fletcher, Lt. R. Olivea, Lt.
Warren and Capt. Martin. Not
pictured are Capt. Stone and Lt.
L. Redfield.
CAP would like to thank the
entire group at Tri-Lakes RC
Flying Club for its hospitality
