Diggers'committees managed <strong>the</strong> regulations and details of <strong>the</strong>w<strong>or</strong>king, at <strong>the</strong> different <strong>fields</strong>, and gave generalsatisfaction.Police (<strong>the</strong>n thought inefficient by a few)paraded <strong>the</strong> different camps by day and by night, and .never failed to preserve law and <strong>or</strong>der. All this wasvery quickly altered by <strong>the</strong> usurping auth<strong>or</strong>ities. subsequentto <strong>the</strong>ir f<strong>or</strong>cible installation of <strong>the</strong>mselves.In <strong>the</strong> Diamond NetQ8 of December 16th, 1871, occur<strong>the</strong> following remarks :-"In <strong>the</strong> IMmond N8tD, lately appeared a picture of Du Toit'sPan at "igAt, as it was under <strong>the</strong> acknowledged very ine1BcientFree State police, and in contrast, as it is now that <strong>the</strong>se arewithdrawn.
