OUR FRUIT IS AN OPEN BOEKWhen dealing with us, the consumer knows straightaway where the fruit has come from. We feel that this creates confidence. Our inspectors and computers provide a solid vehicle allowing complete transparency with regard to BFV fruit as it passesthrough the entire process. Following a product from the beginning to the end, from grower to point of sale, requires awatertight registration system. As well as the classic tracing system, whereby origin and product features are registered bymeans of pallet-box cards, crate cards, plastic covers and labels, the BFV also has an integrated computer-controlled tracingsystem. With the modern supply registration system via Internet, all supplied pallets and pallet boxes are immediately identifiedupon arrival at the BFV with a label that has been given a unique barcode number (= SSCC - Serial Shipping Container Code). The origin (information on the grower), the time of delivery and the product features of each unique SSCC that is allocated arerecorded in the central computer system. A wireless network connecting all BFV departments registers all movements of fruitand vegetables within the BFV via barcode scanners, up to the moment they are loaded by logistics employees. Thanks to this technology, upstream and downstream tracing at BFV is guaranteed at all times.WE CONTROL OURSELVES AND HAVE OURSELVES CONTROLLEDInternal controlWe subject our fruit to our own stringent controls throughout the whole process. Our inspectors check the fruit on delivery to the auctionon the basis of product specifications for optical quality (colour, visible residue, strange objects), organoleptic quality (firmness, peel quality),correct identification (tracing) and packaging. Via a systematised residue monitoring plan, samples of the fruit are taken every day. Theyare analysed by an accredited laboratory. We also systematically take fruit samples upon entry and during storage in our ULO cold stores, which are then inspected in our own laboratory for firmness, sugar content, diameter, colour and taste. This is how we monitor our productat every stage and thanks to this, quality and food safety is ensured continuously and optimally.External controlBoth BFV growers and the BFV itself are regularly inspected and audited for correct compliance with GLOBALGAP, BRC, IFS & QSby accredited independent inspection bodies. At the BFV we are convinced that CUSTOMER SATISFACTION can only be safeguarded by CONTINOUSIMPROVEMENT of both the internal processes at the BFV and the cultivation processes at the BFVgrowers, day in day out.
Pre-sortingNo detail escapes the attention of IQS(Intelligent Quality Sorting)The IQS system assesses apples for their size, bloom and base colour and also for their skin quality. It is composedof an ingenious combination of computers and advanced digital colour and infra-red cameras. We have written thecomputer’s sorting programs. We based our ideas for this exceptionally precise and objective inspection on currentconsumer demands and market requirements.HOW DOES IQS OPERATE?• Each piece of fruit is photographed 72 times: 36 times in infra red, 36 times in colour.• Afterwards the computer calculates the coloured percentage of the surface and compares thephotographs with a pre-programmed databank. Thus it is able to recogniseall deviations, and each grower is given the same objective treatment.• This detailed job is performed at an extraordinary tempo. Some 20 tonsor 1 full trailer passes before its all-seeing eye per hour.Exact sorting yields a wealth of benefitsThis ultramodern pre-sorting system offers both grower andcustomer alike nothing but benefits. We sell the fruit immediately in the correct packagingIn this way, we avoid considerable additional costs from interim packaging, further sorting and cold storage. We can deal with sudden surges in demandThis installation enables us to sort a large capacity in a short time and thus solve any urgent problem immediately. We sort large batches extraordinarily quicklyThanks to IQS, all apples in a particular quality category conform to identical conditions irrespective of the batch, grower or time of sorting. Moreover, the fast throughput of sorting guarantees better retention of quality as well.We take industry’s demands better into accountAs a result of pre-sorting, we get a good picture of the percentage of fruit from the new harvest that will be suitablefor industrial use as early as at the picking stage. Consequently, we are able to make a prognosis of the quantity ofindustrial fruit in the cooling units and are better able to take industry’s demands into account.Furthermore, this enables us to give added value to the qualities A3++ and A4++ of industrial fruitby sorting them in advance as well. And that counts considerably against the costs of pre-sorting.
