The Champion • Wednesday 16 October 2013New museum ‘to tellthe history of Sefton’Report by Ollie CowanNEARLY £1million has been handed over toSefton Council to help create a new museum atSouthport’s Atkinson Arts Centre which willtell the history of Sefton and will includecollections from the former Bootle museum.The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) hasawarded a grant of £923,500 to complete thefunding needed.It will provide Sefton’s museum collectionswith brand new purpose–built display spaces,bringing together for the first time collectionsfrom the former Botanic Gardens Museum inSouthport and the Bootle Museum & ArtGallery.With more than 400 square metres of displayspace on the newly built second floor of TheAtkinson, the museum spaces will have thehighest standards of security andenvironmental control.This will allow The Atkinson to borrowsignificant artefacts from national andinternational lenders in the future.Councillor Ian Moncur, Sefton Cabinetmember families and leisure said: “This isfantastic news for the whole of Sefton.“The new museum will create a fantasticcultural hub for everyone to enjoy and excitingways for families and children to engage withtheir heritage.“We will also be able to display the borough’sfascinating and internationally importantEgyptology collection for the first time in over40 years.“The museum will also celebrate thecreativity and innovative spirit of Sefton, fromthe creation of Dan Dare and the Eagle comic toThe Atkinson Arts Centre in Southport.our maritime heritage and the Vulcan motorvehicles which originated in the resort.”“The new museum will also tell the history ofSefton’s coast – between land and sea, fromthe docks at Bootle to the unique naturalhabitats of Formby and the classic tourist resortof Southport in the 1920s and ‘30s.“The museum will display a wide variety ofobjects and fascinating stories of earlysettlements with 7,000 year old footprints ofthe coast’s earliest human inhabitants,dinosaur footprints and fossils.“It will tell the dramatic story of our maritimehistory, wrecks, rescues and tragedy, landspeed records and early aviation.”Sara Hilton, head of the Heritage LotteryFund North West, added: “We are delighted tosupport this great project that will bringtogether important aspects of Sefton’s cultureand heritage under one roof.
