Cross Country Team at the13th annual Disney CrossCountry ClassicVarsity SoccerThe <strong>2008</strong> varsity soccer had a great year underthe leadership of new head coach Marcos Monteagudo.This year proved to be a breaking “firsttime in history” for the Gaels. Winning the regularseason division title, crowned Archdiocesechampions and the first in school history that an<strong>Iona</strong> Prep team went to the State tournament. Ithas also been six years since <strong>Iona</strong> Prep defeatedrival Fordham Prep. The team finished witha winning record 9 of 11 as coach Monteagudolooks forward to next season with many returningunderclassmen.Junior Varsity SoccerIt was a great year for the JV soccer team at <strong>Iona</strong>Prep. A 4-1 win against Xaverian illustrated theirabilities, with a hat trick goal by Mark Tellez ’12and another goal by Jack Welsh ’12 showed whatthis team was capable of accomplishing. Winningtheir final game against Stepinac would have enteredthe team into the playoffs; the final gameended in a tied score of 1-1. According to headcoach Diego Monteagudo, “Although we fell afraction short of our goal, this team has set thebar for the JV teams of the future.” The JV soccerlooks forward to another challenging year in ’09.CrossCountryT h i s f a l l ’s c ro s scountry season sawmany incredibleteam and individualaccomplishmentssome of them for thefirst time in <strong>Iona</strong> Prephistory. The Team onceagain traveled to Floridato compete in the 13th annualDisney Cross Country Classic.The varsity won the team championship defeatingfifty other schools from across the nation.Sean Halpin’09 won the individual championshipand was followed by strong finishers fromKyle Shepard ‘09 [6th], Vince Fellegara ‘10, NickAthanasidy ‘10, Sterling Hardaway ‘10, Ayo Bajulaiye‘10 and Sean Fuster ‘10. Over three hundredfifty athletes competed in this championshiprace. Not to be out done the JV team placedthird in their race and also brought home one ofthe coveted “Mickey” trophies. Upon their returnthe team competed in the Westchester CountyChampionships. With some great performances,the varsity finished second out of forty schools.<strong>Iona</strong> Prep had the overall best team performanceJunior Varsity SoccerVarsitySoccerin Westchester in the three races. Sean Halpin’09 won the individual title with a time of 12:53.Sean became the first <strong>Iona</strong> Prep athlete to winthe Westchester County Cross County championshipin the fifty-nine years of the meet. Mr.Mitchell, the cross-country team coach had thisto say “The team definitely put in lots of traininghours since the summer, and it certainly paid off.Every week, the varsity team practices for 90minutes on Sunday at Rockefeller State Park.”FALL <strong>2008</strong> 13
