The varsity football team’s undefeatedseason won to the CHSFL AAA Championship.The Class of 2012Welcome Class of 2012On September 12, <strong>2008</strong>, the Class of 2012 arrivedat <strong>Iona</strong> Prep met by President James Irzyk,Principal George Teasdale ‘86, Dean of FreshmanBrian Donofree, Dean of Students KieranDaly and Director of Admissions Ann Slocum. Amatriculation ceremony was held at the HeffernanGymnasium, followed by a day of fun withactivities such as track, flag football, basketballand softball.<strong>Fall</strong> Sports BanquetOn November 25th, over three hundred fortycoaches, staff, parents and athletes attendedthe fall sports banquet which was held at theWestchester Country Club. Awards honoringour student athletes were distributed by headfootball coach Vic Quirolo, head cross countrycoach Jan Mitchell and head soccer coachMarcos Monteagudo. All three fall sports hadan incredible year in succeeding historic wins.The <strong>Fall</strong> Sports BanquetGolf Outing <strong>2008</strong>On September 23rd, <strong>Iona</strong> Prep held its annualgolf outing at Wykagyl Country Club inNew Rochelle. Over one hundred golfers enjoyedthe beautiful weather and perfect conditionson the course. The spectacular day onthe links was followed by cocktails, dinner, awine raffle and an incredible auction. Auctionprizes included: tickets to sporting events,rounds of golf at various courses, dinner at theTap House, signed NY Giants footballs and ahelmet. extra curricularRobert Pellow ’09,Myles Gillespie ’09and StephenZachensky ’09Lourdes,FranceOn August 8, <strong>2008</strong> MylesGillespie ’09, Stephen Zachensky’09 and Robert Pellow’09, members of the Order of MaltaYouth, attended their second pilgrimageto Lourdes, France. Thisyear was the 150th Jubilee of theApparitions to St. Bernadette. Overfive million pilgrims will visit thissmall village, many of whom arehandicapped. The Order of MaltaYouth started fifteen years ago whenyoung students devoted ten days oftheir summer to help the pilgrims.<strong>Iona</strong> Prep’s three young men participatedin two Masses at the Basilicaof St. Pius X and helped the sick tobathe in the water of Lourdes. Theyassisted in the unloading of malades (sick) off thetrains; on some days they averaged an eighteenhour day, rising as early as 4:30 am to meet thetrains and ended the day helping with the procession.The boys had the opportunity to explorethe footsteps of Bernadette, attend Mass daily,enjoyed opportunities for retreat activities includingwalking and praying the Stations of the Cross.Fourteen adults including Kimberly Gillespie P’09chaperoned the twenty-three students from theWestchester/Connecticut area. Mrs. GillespieThe Prep PlayersMom Promwas quoted as saying “It was ablessing for me to witness theHoly Spirit working throughthese three extraordinaryyoung men; they did the workof Christ with their own handsand gave freely of their talentswith a sense of humor.”The seniors escorted their mothers to the annual<strong>Iona</strong> Prep “Mom Prom” on Thursday, November6th. Sponsored by the Mothers’ Auxiliary, theevent took place at the Fountainhead in NewRochelle. The evening began with portraitstaken by Br. Robert Harris, CFC ‘62 of eachsenior with their mom. Br. Gerard Gaffney,CFC gave the opening prayer withthe traditional “Mothers’ Prayer” read by BiancaMottola, chairperson. The seniors presentedtheir mothers with an engraved heart braceletas a memento of this special event. The eveningwas shared by Principal George Teasdale’86 who escorted his mom Carol and PresidentJames Irzyk with wife Jody. Special thanks toco-chairs Karen Tiedeman and Chris Trizano.Prep PlayersThe original 1962 Broadway productionof “Little Me” was recreated bythe very talented Prep Players andactors from the Ursuline school. Thestory of Belle, a girl from the wrongside of the tracks, meets aristocratNoble Eggleston. Her desire to bewith her true love leads her to findfame, fortune and social position.Directed by Jason Summers ’98, themusical-comedy entertained soldoutperformances. The productionwas featured in the Journal Newsas the first high-school musical for<strong>2008</strong>-09. The Prep Players extendtheir gratitude to Mr. Jason Summers’98, director, Ms. Lizabeth Cooke, moderator,Br.
