Case no: 2Nirmala is 42 years old and is working as administrative assistant in a privatecompany. She has a post-graduate degree. She is married to an engineer and havetwo sons aged 21 and 18 respectively. She <strong>had</strong> no major illness in the past. Shefollows a vegetarian diet and maintains ideal body weight.Before the <strong>hysterectomy</strong>, Nirmala was described as a quiet and happy woman. She<strong>had</strong> a small circle <strong>of</strong> friends with <strong>who</strong>m she was close and they used to meet atregular intervals. Nirmala and her husband shared a warm relationship and theydescribed themselves as being good friends rather than being the strictlytraditional husband and wife. Both <strong>of</strong> them were happy and content in therelationship. Their sex life was also satisfactory. They enjoyed travelling,watching films, and spending time together as a family. As a mother, Nirmala wasnot authoritarian or distant. Her sons found her to be a doting mother <strong>who</strong> took aninterest in their studies; sports activities and both the children were close to theirmother. At work, Nirmala was seen as a punctual and dedicated person <strong>who</strong> wascordial and she got along with her co-workers well.Nirmala <strong>had</strong> a <strong>hysterectomy</strong> and bilateral salpingo – oophorectomy 6 years ago atthe age <strong>of</strong> 36. She <strong>had</strong> irregular and frequent periods with heavy bleeding. She wasdiagnosed with fibroid growth in her uterus but the gynaecologist advised against<strong>hysterectomy</strong> taking into consideration her young age. She was given medicinesand painkillers and was asked to wait for a year before opting for surgery.In that one year period, Nirmala continued to have frequent periods (once in tendays or less) along with heavy bleeding. At the end <strong>of</strong> one year, investigationsrevealed that along with fibroids she <strong>had</strong> developed cysts in her ovaries that weregrowing bigger with the passage <strong>of</strong> time. The doctor advised her to have a total<strong>hysterectomy</strong> since there was a possibility that the cysts might be cancerous.Nirmala <strong>had</strong> cysts in only one <strong>of</strong> her ovaries but both ovaries were removed as aprecautionary measure.
