things, endureth all things. Charitynever faileth.” 9Also let us remember that throughany illness or difficult challenge, thereis still much in life to be hopeful aboutand grateful for. We are infinitely morethan our limitations or our afflictions!Stephanie Clark Nielson and herfamily have been our friends for morethan 30 years. On August 16, 2008,Stephanie and her husband, Christian, were in a plane crash and subsequentfire that scarred her so horrificallythat only her painted toenails wererecognizable when family memberscame to indentify the victims. Therewas almost no chance Stephaniecould live. After three months in asleep-induced coma, she awoke to seeherself. With that, the psyche-scarringand horrendous depression came.Having four children under the age ofseven, Stephanie did not want them tosee her ever again. She felt it would bebetter not to live. “I thought it wouldbe easier,” Stephanie once told me inmy office, “if they just forgot about meand I quietly slipped out of their life.”42But to her eternal credit, and withthe prayers of her husband, family, friends, four beautiful children, anda fifth born to the Nielsons just 18months ago, Stephanie fought her wayback from the abyss of self-destructionto be one of the most popular “mommybloggers” in the nation, openly declaringto the four million who follow herblog that her “divine purpose” in lifeis to be a mom and to cherish everyday she has been given on this beautifulearth.Whatever your struggle, my brothersand sisters—mental or emotionalor physical or otherwise—do not voteagainst the preciousness of life byending it! Trust in God. Hold on inHis love. Know that one day the dawnwill break brightly and all shadowsof mortality will flee. Though we mayfeel we are “like a broken vessel,” asthe Psalmist says, 10 we must remember, that vessel is in the hands of thedivine potter. Broken minds can behealed just the way broken bones andbroken hearts are healed. While Godis at work making those repairs, therest of us can help by being merciful, nonjudgmental, and kind.I testify of the holy Resurrection, that unspeakable cornerstone giftin the Atonement of the Lord JesusChrist! With the Apostle Paul, I testifythat that which was sown in corruptionwill one day be raised in incorruptionand that which was sown inweakness will ultimately be raisedin power. 11 I bear witness of that daywhen loved ones whom we knew tohave disabilities in mortality will standbefore us glorified and grand, breathtakinglyperfect in body and mind. What a thrilling moment that will be!I do not know whether we will behappier for ourselves that we havewitnessed such a miracle or happierfor them that they are fully perfectand finally “free at last.” 12 Until thathour when Christ’s consummate gift isevident to us all, may we live by faith, hold fast to hope, and show “compassionone of another,” 13 I pray, in thename of Jesus Christ, amen. ◼NOTES1. 1 Peter 3:8.2. By Elder M. Russell BallardOf the Quorum of the Twelve ApostlesPut Your Trust in the LordBecome engaged in doing what you can in sharing the greatmessage of the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ.Sister Ballard and I recentlyreturned from an assignmentto five countries in Europe. There we had the privilege of meetingwith many of our missionaries, perhaps some of your sons and yourdaughters. Since President Thomas S.Monson’s announcement of the loweringof the age for our young menand our young women to serve, I havehad the privilege of meeting with over3,000 of them. The Light of Christ radiatesin their faces, and they are eagerto move the work forward—to findand teach, to baptize, to activate, andto strengthen and to build the kingdomof God. Meeting with them, onequickly comes to know, however, thatthey cannot do this work alone. TodayI want to speak to all members of theChurch, because there is an urgencyfor each one of us to be engaged insharing the gospel. As has been quoted many times, the Prophet Joseph Smith declaredthat “after all that has been said, thegreatest and most important duty isto preach the Gospel” (Teachings ofPresidents of the Church: Joseph Smith[2007], 330).In 1974 President Spencer W.Kimball said this: “Perhaps the greatestreason for missionary work is to givethe world its chance to hear andaccept the gospel. The scriptures arereplete with commands and promisesand calls and rewards for teachingthe gospel. I use the word commanddeliberately for it seems to be aninsistent directive from which we,singly and collectively, cannot escape”(“When the World Will Be Converted,”Ensign, Oct. 1974, 4).In July of that same year, SisterBallard and I left with our childrento preside over the Canada TorontoMission. The words of PresidentKimball were ringing in my ears, especially when he said: “My brethren,I wonder if we are doing all we can.Are we complacent in our approachto teaching all the world? We havebeen proselyting now 144 years. Arewe prepared to lengthen our stride? To enlarge our vision?” (Ensign, Oct.1974, 5).He also asked us to quicken ourpace, working together to build up theChurch and kingdom of God.This past June President Thomas S.Monson echoed exactly the samemessage to members of the Church. The President said: “Now is the timefor members and missionaries tocome together . . . [and] labor in theLord’s vineyard to bring souls untoHim. He has prepared the means forus to share the gospel in a multitudeof ways, and He will assist us in ourlabors if we will act in faith to fulfillHis work” (“Faith in the Work ofSalvation” [address given at a specialbroadcast, June 23, 2013]; lds.org/broadcasts).It is good, brothers and sisters, toreflect on the teachings of the prophetsfrom the time of Joseph Smith totoday. They have encouraged andcalled upon the leadership and themembers of the Church to be anxiouslyengaged in bringing the messageof the Restoration of the gospelto all of our Heavenly Father’s childrenin all of the world. My message this afternoon is thatthe Lord is hastening His work. Inour day this can be done only whenevery member of the Church reachesout with love to share the truths ofthe restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Weneed to work together in partnershipwith our 80,000 missionaries nowserving. Information about this greatwork, especially the assignments forthe stake and ward council leaders,is clearly outlined on the LDS.orgwebsite entitled “Hastening the Workof Salvation.”We know from our research thatmost active members of the Churchwant the blessings of the gospel tobe part of the lives of others whomthey love, even those whom they havenever met. But we also know thatmany members hesitate to do missionarywork and share the gospel for twobasic reasons.• The first one is fear. Many membersdo not even pray for opportunitiesto share the gospel, fearing thatthey might receive divine promptingsto do something they thinkthey are not capable of doing.• The second reason is misunderstandingof what missionary work is.November 201343
