spiritually. Upon returning from mymission, I had the opportunity to playbasketball for a well-respected coachand author at a college in California. This coach was very serious about hisplayers being in shape before the startof the basketball season. One of histraining prerequisites before any of uscould touch a basketball on the practicecourt was to run a cross-country coursein the hills near the school in a specificand very aggressive time. I remembermy very first attempt at running thiscross-country course immediately uponmy return from the mission field: Ithought I was going to die.It took weeks of serious trainingin order to finally beat the time thatthe coach set as a goal. It was a greatfeeling to not only be able to run thecourse but also to accelerate down thestretch to the finish line.To play basketball successfully, youneed to get into good shape. Being ingood physical condition comes at aprice, and that price is dedication, perseverance, and self-discipline. Spiritualendurance also comes at a price. It isthe same price: dedication, perseverance, and self-discipline.A testimony, like your body, needs to be in shape if you want itto endure. So how do we keep ourtestimonies in shape? We cannot getour bodies into good basketball shapeby simply watching basketball ontelevision. Similarly, we won’t be ableto get our testimonies in shape bysimply watching general conferenceon television. We need to study andlearn the fundamental principles ofthe gospel of Jesus Christ, and thenwe must do our very best to live them. That is how we become disciples ofJesus Christ, and that is how we buildan enduring testimony. When we face adversity in life andour desire is to emulate the attributesof Jesus Christ, it is essential to bespiritually prepared. Being spirituallyprepared means we have developedspiritual stamina or strength—we willbe in good shape spiritually. We willbe in such good shape spiritually thatwe will consistently choose the right. We will become immovable in ourdesire and ability to live the gospel. Asan anonymous author once said, “Youmust become the rock the river cannotwash away.”Because we face challenges everyday, it is important that we workon our spiritual stamina every day. When we develop spiritual stamina, the false traditions of the world, aswell as our personal daily challenges, will have little negative impact on ourability to endure in righteousness.Great examples of spiritual staminacome from our own family histories.Among the many stories from ourancestors, we will be able to findexamples that demonstrate the positivecharacteristics of endurance.A story from my own family historyillustrates this principle. My greatgrandfatherJoseph Watson Mayneswas born in 1856 in Hull, Yorkshire,England. His family joined the Churchin England and then made their wayto Salt Lake City. He married EmilyKeep in 1883, and they became theparents of eight children. Joseph wascalled to serve a full-time mission inJune of 1910, when he was 53 yearsold. With the support of his wife andeight children, he returned to hisnative England to serve his mission.Joseph Watson Maynes (right) with his companion, Gilpin S. Woolley80
After serving faithfully for approximatelytwo years, he was riding hisbicycle along with his companion toSunday School services in Gloucester,England, when his tire burst. He gotoff his bicycle to assess the damage. When he saw that it was serious andwould take a while to fix, he told hiscompanion to go ahead and begin theSunday service and he would be thereshortly. Just as he finished saying this,he collapsed to the ground. He haddied suddenly of a heart attack.Joseph Watson Maynes never sawhis wife and eight children again inthis life. They were able to transporthis body back to Salt Lake City andhave his funeral service at the oldWaterloo Assembly Hall. A statementmade at his funeral service by ElderAnthony W. Ivins of the Quorum ofthe Twelve Apostles teaches us animportant lesson about life, death, andendurance: “This is what the gospelgives us—not immunity from death, but victory over it through the hopewe have in a glorious resurrection. . . .It applies to [ Joseph Maynes]. . . . It isa pleasure, and it is a satisfaction andjoy to know that men lay down theirlives in righteousness, in the faith, trueto the faith.” 4This family story inspires me to trymy very best to follow the exampleof endurance and spiritual staminaillustrated by my great-grandfather. Iam equally inspired by the faith of hiswife, Emily, whose life after Joseph’sdeath was certainly a heavy burdento bear. Her testimony was strong andher conversion complete as she spentthe rest of her life true to the faithwhile supporting her eight children onher own.The Apostle Paul stated, “Let us layaside every weight, and the sin whichdoth so easily beset us, and let us runwith patience the race that is set beforeus.” 5 The race that is set before us onthis earth is an endurance race filledwith obstacles. The obstacles in thisrace are the challenges we wake up toeach morning. We are here on earthto run the race, to exercise our moralagency, and to choose between rightand wrong. In order to honorably andsuccessfully finish the race and returnto our Heavenly Father, we will needto pay the price of dedication, perseverance, and self-discipline. We needto get into spiritual shape. We needto develop spiritual stamina. We needstrong testimonies that will lead to trueconversion, and as a result we will findwithin ourselves the inner peace andstrength needed to endure whateverchallenges we may face.So whatever challenges you wakeup to each morning, remember—withthe spiritual strength you develop, coupled with the Lord’s help, at theend of the race you will be able toenjoy the confidence that the ApostlePaul expressed when he said:“For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is athand.“I have fought a good fight, I havefinished my course, I have kept thefaith:“Henceforth there is laid up for mea crown of righteousness, which theLord, the righteous judge, shall giveme at that day.” 6I bear you my testimony and mywitness of the reality of a lovingHeavenly Father and His great andeternal plan of happiness, which hasbrought us to this earth at this time.May the Spirit of the Lord inspire usall to develop within ourselves thestrength to endure. In the name ofJesus Christ, amen. ◼NOTES1. Doctrine and Covenants 121:7–8.2. Helaman 14:30.3. 2 Nephi 31:20.4. Anthony W.
