University of Westminster &German 1006ACMinistry of Defence Languages Examinations Board Page 8 of 24

Task 2News Item (English Version)You are going to listen to a news report about the disappearance of a schoolgirl.A 57-year-old man was arrested today in connection with the abduction and murder ofschoolgirl Amanda Dowler.Surrey police said they detained a man from the Greater London area this morning. Aspokesman for the police said that the man was currently being questioned at a Surrey policestation and that an address in Greater London was being searched.Amanda went missing on her way home from school in 2002. She was last seen by a friendwalking home from school on March 21. In the weeks after her disappearance numerousappeals were made on television and a home made video of her dancing around her house wasshown repeatedly. However, it took 6 months for her body to be found. It was discovered naked by a couple outwalking in a wood over 20 kilometres away from her home. Surrey police mounted anextensive investigation, but until today the killer had not been found. In March, on the anniversary of Amanda’s disappearance, her family made a fresh publicappeal for help in catching their daughter's killer. They said in a statement that they wouldurge anyone to come forward with any information that may help Surrey police with theirinvestigation. “We need to know the name and see the face of the person who murdered ourbeautiful daughter,” they said. “It is a long and painful wait but one day we feel confident thatthe diligence and hard work of the police will succeed.”Since Amanda’s disappearance family have set up a charity to raise awareness of personalsafety issues in children and young adults. They have also backed a safety campaignencouraging parents to learn to use text messaging to keep in touch with their children. The inquiry into Amanda’s murder is the largest of its kind undertaken by Surrey police. InMarch this year detectives revealed that since 2002 they had questioned 2,885 people, taken4,288 statements and carried out 127 searches.University of Westminster &German 1006ACMinistry of Defence Languages Examinations Board Page 9 of 24

Task 1CommunicationIn response to the letter below, draft a letter for my signature to the local newspaper.Sir,In the light of so much criticism of the forces stationed here, I would like to say how muchI enjoyed the open day at the base last week.Everyone was given a hearty welcome and the displays put on were both impressive andinformative.I brought my class of 13 year olds from the local school, and the day provided us withmuch stimulus material for future classes. My only very minor complaint was with the range of music. Did there have to be so manymarching tunes? In many other ways the forces seem to be moving with the times. It is ashame that in this they are stuck in the past.Points to be made:1. Open day very successful more people than ever before.2. Personnel trained hard to pull off the event.3. Policy to target the young and show all the sides to the army.4. Tunes – good historical record.5. Band can and does play more modern tunes. You are advised to spend approximately 30 minutes on this task.University of Westminster &German 1006ACMinistry of Defence Languages Examinations Board Page 12 of 24

Task 2Draft TranslationPrepare a draft translation of the following report.Conveying the meaning and content of the passage is the most important part of the task, butyou should try to recreate the style and tone of the English in your version. You are advised to spend approximately 45 minutes on this task. The Royal Navy operates in a fast changing and uncertain world. The ability to adaptrapidly is central if we are to ensure we remain both capable and resilient. We must be amodern and relevant force capable of sustained deployments. We must have the ability torespond rapidly and effectively to crises whenever and wherever required. Workingincreasingly closely alongside the Army and the RAF, we may be called upon to operateas part of a coalition or to lead other nations in a coalition. Not only this, but we must alsomaintain the ability to counter any threat both at home and abroad. In the future, the Royal Navy’s structure will be based upon attack power from aircraftcarriers, and a nuclear submarine force. The Navy’s central role in the United Kingdom'sforeign and security policy means that the size and shape of the fleet must continuallyevolve to meet new challenges. The Royal Navy must also operate as cost-effectively aspossible. This philosophy is reflected in the design of the next generation of ships whichwill have smaller crews but will exploit innovative technological solutions, includinggreater computer automation, to ensure they are highly capable and versatile vessels.University of Westminster &German 1006ACMinistry of Defence Languages Examinations Board Page 13 of 24

Thank you for agreeing to see me.We are always ready to listen to what you have to say.We need to discuss the situation about the two journalists that you are holding. What’s there to discuss? They were trying to get into our camp late at night, weapprehended them. I’m sure you would do the same with people you found inyour camp.We might hold them and investigate their story, but we wouldn’t hold them fortwo weeks as you have. That is just a difference of style. I could tell of incidents where your forces dohold people for more than two weeks. These people are part of the international media. They are not part of a fightingforce. There is no reason to keep them.We are concerned that reporting of our actions has not been balanced. Andanyway, we only have your word and there is no proof that they are journalists. But they have not done any harm to you or your organisation. University of Westminster &German 1006ACMinistry of Defence Languages Examinations Board Page 24 of 24
