So, you like canned salmon, eh? You’d have loved Steveston back in 1897.
Granted, they didn’t know much about the health benefits of protein,
calcium, and Omega-3 fatty acids in those days. But they knew canned
salmon. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery packed a whopping 2.5 million cans
that year.
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is open daily from 10
a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is just $9.00 for adults,
$7.50 for seniors, $4.50 for children over six, and
free for tots. Or you can opt for the Family Admission
rate of $22.00. Free parking is available.
Britannia Heritage Shipyards
Britannia Shipyards (richmond.ca/britannia) honours
a way of life that flourished when Steveston was
the “salmon capital of the world.” Stroll along a
waterfront boardwalk and visit renovated 19thcentury
stilt houses, bunkhouses, and boatworks.
Historic fishing vessels are on display.
You’ll discover the stories of real people who resided
in BC’s oldest shipyard community, from original
police chief John Murchison to boat builder Otokichi
Murakami.
The “How We Lived” exhibit displays living conditions
for cannery workers of European and Chinese
heritage. Check out restored rooms adorned with
movie postcards, old sewing machines, and castiron
stoves, and listen to recorded interviews with
onetime residents. Take a brochure for a self-guided

Each August, Britannia hosts the Richmond
Maritime Festival. Up to 15,000 people attend to
admire different vessels, from old fishing boats to
classic power boats to 1930’s rum-runners. Families
enjoy singing along to sea shanties and learning
how to tie knots.
Another fun family option at Britannia is throwing
a pirate-themed birthday party, complete with a
costumed performer. Folk concerts and yoga classes
also take place here.
The site is open Tuesday to Sunday from May to
September, and weekends from October to April.
