Later thatnight, Prof. Armstrong drove me back to a hotel near the Pittsburgh Airport and I flew home onFriday April 11 th .Dr. Jerry WinandySWST Visiting ScientistWest Virginia UniversityApril 8-10, 2008Dr. Jerry Winandy visited West Virginia University from April 8-10 under sponsorship of theSWST Visiting Scientist Program. During his busy three days on campus, Dr. Winandy madefour presentations to classes and gave a formal seminar for the Division of Forestry and NaturalResources. His visit also provided numerous opportunities to interact with our wood sciencefaculty and students, and staff of the Appalachian Hardwood Center.After arriving in Morgantown on April 8, Dr. Winandy gave a talk, “History of the U.S. ForestService and Forest Products Laboratory and the Development of Engineered Composites” to the90 students in Dr. Jim Armstrong’s “Forest Resources in U.S. History” class. This course is partof the General Education Curriculum at WVU and includes students in numerous majors. As aresult, his talk was most likely the first time many of the students ever heard of FPL orunderstood the breadth and environmentally-positive role of wood science research. Severalwood science graduate students and faculty also sat in on this lecture.On April 9, he met with two classes. He spoke to Dr. Bruce Anderson’s “Plant Layout for WoodIndustries” class on “Integrated biomass technologies: How biorefineries, biofuels, bio-basedchemicals, advanced composites, and co-gen energy may all fit together in the near future.”This is a small, capstone course in the WVU Wood Science curriculum, but “walk-ins” swelledthe number in attendance to approximately 25 students, faculty, and staff. He also gave a talk on“Development of an accelerated laboratory method to assess decay effects on wood strength forsolid-wood and composites” to Dr. Ben Dawson-Andoh’s “Forest Products Protection” class.Approximately 30 undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff attended thispresentation.On that day, he also held informal meetings with the program’s graduate and undergraduatestudents. The session with seven graduate students focused upon areas of research but alsoincluded a pitch for grad students to attend the 2008 SWST Annual Convention in Concepcion.A late afternoon meeting with the student chapter of FPS was sparsely attended (six or sevenstudents) but was a very interesting informal discussion over the future of the Forest Service, thenational forest system, and how wood scientists need to be advocates of forest management aswell as wood utilization. In what turned out to be a very busy day, he also spent a couple ofhours touring the WVU Research Forest, the MeadWestvaco Natural Resources Center, and theadjacent Cooper’s Rock State Forest east of Morgantown.On Thursday, April 10, Dr. Winandy spent the morning in informal discussions with the staff ofthe Appalachian Hardwood Center at WVU. He spoke informally to Dr. Armstrong’s “Physical
Properties” class on the topic of “Moisture and heat transfer interrelationships in wood.”Fifteen students attended the talk.The Division of Forestry and Natural resources hosted a seminar by Dr. Winandy on Thursdayafternoon on “Wood composites as a tool for forest sustainability.” Attendance wasapproximately 12-15 faculty and graduate students. (As a self-critique offered to other programsparticipating in the Visiting Scientist Program, we would not recommend scheduling a featuredseminar as late in the visit as we did. If the seminar had been held Wednesday morning, wesuspect that attendance would have doubled.)The faculty, students, and staff of the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources at WVU wishto thank the Society of Wood Science and Technology and its Visiting Scientist Committee formaking Dr. Winandy’s visit possible.
