Provost and Executive Vice President<br />
for Academic Affairs (Interim)<br />
Harvey G. Stenger Jr., PhD, was appointed interim provost<br />
on April 11, 2011, after serving as dean <strong>of</strong> UB’s <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Engineering and Applied Sciences since 2006. A chemical<br />
engineer by training, Stenger earned his bachelor’s degree<br />
from Cornell <strong>University</strong> and his PhD from the<br />
Massachusetts Institute <strong>of</strong> Technology. From 1984-2006, he<br />
was on the faculty <strong>of</strong> the engineering school <strong>at</strong> Lehigh<br />
<strong>University</strong>, where he also served as dean for six years.<br />
Since his arrival <strong>at</strong> UB in 2006, Stenger has worked to enhance UB’s standing among<br />
leading research universities. Under his leadership <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Engineering and<br />
Applied Sciences, student quality and program rankings have improved significantly <strong>at</strong><br />
the undergradu<strong>at</strong>e and gradu<strong>at</strong>e levels. He strengthened the size and quality <strong>of</strong> the<br />
engineering faculty, including hiring two members <strong>of</strong> the N<strong>at</strong>ional Academy <strong>of</strong><br />
Engineering. He has overseen the school’s ongoing $100 million capital campaign,<br />
which gener<strong>at</strong>ed support for the construction <strong>of</strong> the new 130,000-square-foot Barbara<br />
and Jack Davis Hall. In partnership with the dean <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medicine and<br />
Biomedical Sciences, Stenger launched UB’s innov<strong>at</strong>ive new program in biomedical<br />
engineering. He has enhanced the school’s student and faculty diversity, and expanded<br />
its intern<strong>at</strong>ional programs in Turkey, India and France.<br />
Stenger is a member <strong>of</strong> the boards <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Buffalo</strong>–Area Engineering Awareness for<br />
Minorities, and the UB Found<strong>at</strong>ion. He has been honored as a distinguished alumnus<br />
<strong>of</strong> Cornell <strong>University</strong>, and has received multiple awards <strong>at</strong> Lehigh, in <strong>Buffalo</strong> and from<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional associ<strong>at</strong>ions for his teaching, mentorship and public and pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

The Alfiero Center<br />
An architectural masterpiece <strong>of</strong> glass,<br />
brick, space and light, the three-story,<br />
23,000 square-foot building was named<br />
in honor <strong>of</strong> the chair and CEO <strong>of</strong><br />
Protective Industries, Sal H. Alfiero, who<br />
made a $2 million gift to the school. The<br />
Alfiero Center is UB’s first academic<br />
facility to be funded primarily through<br />
priv<strong>at</strong>e don<strong>at</strong>ions and is entirely<br />
student-focused. Adjoining the Jacobs<br />
<strong>Management</strong> Center on UB’s North<br />
