Redcliffe Zonta celebrates 25 years
Sallyanne Atkinson AO addressed over
150 Zontians and guests at the Zonta
Club of Redcliffe’s 25th Anniversary on
Friday night 20 May.
Sallyanne Atkinson, AO, is Special
Representative for Queensland, South-
East Asia in the Queensland
Government. She is currently a director
of several public companies and
associations and was Deputy Mayor of
the Olympic Village for Sydney 2000.
She is a former Lord Mayor of Brisbane,
Australian Senior Trade Commissioner
to Paris, and former Chair of
Queensland Tourism.
Also a member of the Brisbane Zonta
Club, Ms Atkinson was delighted to be
back in Redcliffe. She took the opportunity
to share her experiences when she first
stood for the Indooroopilly Ward in Brisbane
City Council 25 years ago.
Chatting to Redcliffe Zonta president
Deanna Cruickshank revealed that Ms
Atkinson and Ms Cruickshank were born
a month apart in Sri Lanka neither
admitting to who was the older!
Vice Chairman International
Nominating Committee Jane O’Brien,
who revealed that the club had raised
well over $300,000 for the community in
its 25 years since its formation,
presented a history of the club. Part of
Zonta’s charter is to improve the status
of women and to promote justice and
universal respect for human rights.
2005 is the 25th Anniversary of
CareFlight, a service which is provided
free to the community despite an
average cost of approximately $7,000 for
each job.
Carol Haffke gave a short history of
CareFlight and a brief description of their
services at the last meeting of the
Redcliffe National Senior Association.
“We’re based at the Gold Coast Airport
(Tugun) and in 24 years we haven’t had
an accident,” said Carol.
“The mixture of medical and aviation
staff are highly qualified – there are fulltime
paramedics and doctors and the air
crew – and the equipment is high tech.”
Carol explained that when there is a
Code 1, the whole airport stops to ensure
the CareFlight helicopter gets priority.
CareFlight is available 24 hours per day
to perform inter hospital transfers (IHT)
and neo natal retrievals (NNR) using a
100kg humidicrib and a twin-engine
Four lanes for Hornibrook Esplanade
Safety will be improved and peak hour
traffic congestion eased with the
widening of Hornibrook Esplanade.
Work has started on the upgrade, which
will cater for continuing traffic growth in
the Redcliffe-Brisbane corridor.
Transport and Main Roads Minister
Paul Lucas said that the work would
come on top of the Beattie Government's
commitment to the $149 million
Houghton Highway duplication.
Mr Lucas said that when complete, the
safety work would alleviate peak hour
congestion and improve road safety.
"The project will widen Hornibrook
At the end of the evening charter
president Lois Bowes joined Ms
Cruickshank to cut the celebratory cake
chopper.
Almost half of the call outs to accidents
are road accidents.
“We can get to most places within an
hour – we call it the golden hour – the
first hour is critical following an accident,”
said Carol.
CareFlight helicopters are invaluable in
search and rescue, particularly when
areas are inaccessible.
The cost to keep CareFlight in the air
is $6million per annum. $1.2million is
raised through sponsorship with RACQ
being the major sponsor; $1.2million is
from State and Local Governments and
the remaining 60% is from the general
public through donations and the sale of
the CareFlight bears.
Esplanade to four lanes between Bells
Creek and Oxley Avenue," he said.
"The existing four-lane carriageway will
be widened to provide a centre median
and traffic signals will be installed at the
intersection with Victoria Avenue.
"Currently, about 17,000 vehicles a day
use this stretch of road and traffic signals
at Victoria Avenue will reduce delays and
improve safety for drivers using this busy
intersection.''
Mr Lucas said Basic Construction
Services had won a $2.1 million contract
for the work which would continue until
the end of June.

“Look … I hear pretty good really …
It’s just that people don’t speak
clearly.”
“Even people with normal hearing
wear purpose designed hearing aids
these days!”
Hear these a lot?
They are conflicting aren’t they? NO!
How is that so?
Well …
As humans
we are
‘strong on’
our individual
needs. These
aren’t in
conflict, just
individual.
Importantly, today’s
hearing aid technology can be equally
individually designed on you.
Like ourselves it can be reversible at
any time.
Both of these features can be made
independent of the passage of time
within physical lifespan of the hearing
aid. If these are new concepts to you,
they should not be. You need to drop in
or call directly for an appointment so I
can give an individual response.
As a partner in your hearing/hearing
aid management, you will have
interactive service. You may not like
everything you find out about your
hearing/current hearing aids, but that
is the benefit of honesty in any
partnership. Agreed personal hearing
goals will then be achievable using
modifiable hearing technology.
Goldie says goodbye
Losing a beloved pet
is like losing a friend.
Pets never question
your actions and offer
unconditional love.
Last week we lost
our “Goldie” – a
friendly little
Chihuahua who
adored people. Her
heart was failing and
that decision of all
decisions had to be made.
Her “doctors”, veterinarians James
Cummin and Ian Lynch and her “nurses”,
Jackie and Jane, couldn’t have been
kinder. Then came the next step – this
too was made easier thanks to a
wonderful service called “Pets Eternal
Peace”.
A gentle lady, Angie (she should be
called Angel), took little “Goldie” to be
cremated and a few days later returned
her in a beautiful white urn with a gold
Angie’s husband Steve rang that evening
to make sure we were happy with the
service. Steve and Angie made a sad
situation easier to bear.
The irony is, having found a business
that has such a professional and caring
service; I hope we don’t need to use
them again in the foreseeable future. For
anyone who loses their pet and wants to
provide their pet with an affordable,
dignified and respectful cremation, I
Animals aid their centre
The Peninsula Animal Aid will be
approximately $900 better off thanks to
the recent Million Paws Walk done in
conjunction with the RSPCA.
Dogs and their owners walked
hundreds of kilometres between them to
raise the much-needed funds. Over 22
local businesses donated products and
services to ensure the success of the
day.
The Million Paws Walk also gave
residents a chance to have their dog
micro-chipped for a reduced fee. Micro
chipping helps the Council to identify
your animal if it strays or becomes lost.
It can be done through your local
veterinary practice.
Power Crash
Peninsula Power/Redcliffe Leagues
Division 1 crashed in both grades at the
hands of Ipswich Knights last Saturday
Night at Bundamba.
The Peninsula Fair Discount Meats first
team suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss
to a fired up Knights side.
Power Senior Coach Steve Faulkner
conceded that his team didn’t play at their
best.
“We only really started to stamp our
authority in the match after we went a
goal down and just couldn’t find the
equalizer,” Faulkner said.
Redcliffe Leagues Padres Baseball
club’s Winter Major League team, made
it two wins from two starts when it
defeated Indians 11-9 at Ipswich last
weekend. With the last minute
unavailability of two players, coaches Bob
Nilsson and Keith Land were forced to
take to the diamond with no replacements
available. Despite their presence, the side
still recorded the win. Coach Nilsson had
a big impact on the game with a crucial
scoring hit late in the game as well as
pitching one innings of work.
Although the scoreline was close, the
side led the whole game and despite giving
up five runs to the opposition in the last
innings, the Padres were always in control.
Steve Smith continued his good form with
two crucial catches and a bases clearing
hit whilst Calvin Vellnagel recorded the
save with two innings of work on the
mound. With the wins, the side now shares
the shortened competition lead and play
next Sunday against UQ Ravens at
Runcorn at 11:30 am.
likes 2200m as shown at the Gold Coast
on 14 May. Write him down.
TESTAFIABLE: Placed at every start
biting; from four starts he has never been
unplaced. He came from 12th on the turn
