Students planning research, development,<br />

human subjects or the direct use <strong>of</strong> animals<br />

must submit a protocol to the Committee<br />

for the Protection <strong>of</strong> Human Subjects or the<br />

Animal Use and Care Committee for review<br />

and approval before data can be used in a<br />

thesis/dissertation.<br />

University Career Planning<br />

<strong>The</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> the campus Career Center <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

assists students and alumni in career planning<br />

and employment needs. <strong>The</strong> center provides<br />

information on trends in employment<br />

opportunities. It also conducts workshops<br />

on application and résumé preparation and<br />

on job search and interviewing techniques.<br />

Housing<br />

Historically, most Berkeley graduate students<br />

have lived in rental housing in Berkeley and<br />

nearby communities. Increasingly, though,<br />

the University is providing housing for graduate<br />

students. When considering universityprovided<br />

and alternative housing options, note<br />

that space may be limited, and in many cases<br />

early application is advised. Here are the<br />

various housing options available to graduate<br />

<strong>Public</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Alumni<br />

Association and Related<br />

Activities<br />

Established in 1953, the <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Health</strong><br />

Alumni Association’s purpose is to promote<br />

community among the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Public</strong><br />

<strong>Health</strong>’s active alumni and current students.<br />

With support from the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Public</strong><br />

<strong>Health</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> External Relations and<br />

Development, the alumni association sponsors<br />

and participates in an array <strong>of</strong> activities and<br />

events designed to assist the group in fulfilling<br />

its stated purpose, including:<br />

• <strong>The</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Alumni Scholarship<br />

Program, which typically awards between<br />

40-50 scholarships annually to continuing<br />

students.<br />

• A special online community developed<br />

exclusively for <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Health</strong><br />

alumni, “@Cal,” <strong>of</strong>fers free services, including<br />

a searchable alumni directory, career<br />

networking opportunities, and alumni<br />

e-mail forwarding.<br />

• Participation in school governance, which<br />

is achieved by having alumni representation<br />

on a number <strong>of</strong> schoolwide committees,<br />

including multicultural opportunity, continuing<br />

education, curriculum, and faculty search<br />

committees as needed.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> twice-yearly Berkeley <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Health</strong><br />

magazine and monthly electronic bulletin<br />

SPH e-News provide news and information<br />

<strong>of</strong> interest to both alumni and other constituent<br />

groups, including students, faculty, staff,<br />

friends, donors, legislators, government<br />

agencies, peer institutions, foundations, and<br />

corporations.<br />

• Each year at commencement, members <strong>of</strong><br />

the graduating class are inspired by the selec-<br />

tion <strong>of</strong> an outstanding former graduate as<br />

Alumnus/a <strong>of</strong> the Year.<br />

Alumni are an important source <strong>of</strong> support<br />

for the school, both in terms <strong>of</strong> their role as<br />

donors and service as volunteers in a variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> capacities. Alumni gifts are used to fund<br />

a variety <strong>of</strong> activities, including scholarships,<br />

capital improvements, visiting scholars, and<br />

all <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Alumni Association activities.<br />

Throughout the year, the association cosponsors<br />

local outreach and networking<br />

activities, such as pr<strong>of</strong>essional development<br />

workshops and the popular Career Café and<br />

Networking Event. Regionally, they participate<br />

in events in connection with the American<br />

<strong>Public</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Association and the California<br />

<strong>Public</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Association — North.<br />
