pipe would mount under the hatchslider turtle, making it nearly impossibleto access. Instead, we fabricateda bracket in the top of the pipe, andI ordered a three-inch Edson wiresheave in bronze. Once installed, thissheave sits at the very top of the pipe,above the waterline, and is accessible,as it’s simply open. In bronze, it’s alsoquite attractive, and I designed thebracket to show this off. To do theheavy lifting, I removed the bronzeworm-gear winch from the cockpitand made a simple bracket that we’dweld onto the pipe to then bolt thewinch onto. Once complete, thewinch will hide under the cabin table.In theory, we now had a muchsimpler system — the cable wouldterminate on the board in its samelocation, turn around the new sheavein the keel and lead up through thepipe. It would exit the pipe inside thecabin around the new Edson sheave,whereby it would run along the outsideand down to the winch.Building and welding the pipeand its associated brackets in theshop was a cinch. I did the cutting(with either a band-saw or cutoffwheelgrinder), polishing and fittingwhile Carroll welded it all together.The biggest challenge was gettingthe angle between the pipe and theplate right so that the pipe would bevertical inside the cabin. We accomplishedthis by simply tack weldingthe pipe in place and dry-fitting itonto the keel, adjusting it before finishingthe weld.Installing the new systemThe other big challenge was sizingthe length of the pipe so we couldinstall it. The whole thing is onepiece now — the new stainless lid sitsabout three inches below the cabinsole. I needed to make the pipe aslong as possible (it was going to bethrough-bolted through the cabinroof), but short enough to slide intoplace. I cut out several mahoganycircles and laminated them togetherto use as a spacer between the top ofthe pipe and the cabin roof. Arcturushas a molded, fiberglass headliner,which I had to cut out so as to be ableto bolt the top directly onto the deck.I used six-inch 1/4-20 fasteners (thebolts run through the pipe bracketand the mahogany spacers) and putcap nuts on the inside to finish it. Wecaulked and bolted down the stainlessplate and followed up by bolting thetop through the cabin roof, using aheavy aluminum backing plate (Thiswas difficult, as the top of the pipelined up with the hatch-slider turtle.To access the nuts, I had to tape awrench to the end of a broomstickand carefully guide the nuts intoplace as my dad turned a wrenchfrom below. The backing plate is hiddenunder the hatch turtle).The big test would come whenI attempted to drop a weightedline down through the pipe. Withthe boat in the slings, I fished aline through while my dad tenselywatched from below. Out it came!With the line over the top sheave onthe pipe, my dad grabbed the endunder the keel and we ran it back andforth over both sheaves — the alignmentwas spot on. When we attachedthe board and the winch, it couldn’thave worked more smoothly.This new system simplifies andstrengthens the lifting mechanism onthe centerboard to a nearly foolproofand serviceable system.
