LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORApril Fool’s Day, 2013. The ice officially left DamariscottaLake today. I headed over to our new land across thelake to see how the apple orchard pruning was coming alongand to soak in the beginning of spring. Iparked outside Walter’s house next to theremnants of the lone spruce tree that fellharmlessly in a winter storm, grabbedmy camera and coat, and headed acrossthe field. I tip-toed through the mud thencame up over the rise to see the multitalentedEliza hanging from one of thetaller trees with a saw in her free handand an ear to ear grin across her face. After talking for a while and learning afew tricks of the trade, I couldn’t wait toHenry & BJ Kennedyfinally catch a glimpse of the liquid lake for the first timesince December.Making my way down the long, tree-lined path the Canadageese honked in the distance and the happy sounds of theLeadership School kids drifted across the lake. When I gotto the water’s edge I sat in the sun on a make-shift log benchthat our “Friends Forever” volunteersfrom Ireland and Northern Ireland hadcarefully placed under a huge old whitepine that probably started growing thereabout the same time my grandfatherfounded Kieve. A chunk of the tree brokeoff in the same storm that claimed thespruce, creating a new home for the bassthat would soon be waking up. The covewas filled with hundreds, maybe even athousand ducks and geese of all shapes, sizes, colors and sounds – not a bad placeto stop and take a deep breath on their way north. There wasnowhere on earth that I would rather be at that moment.Spring at Kieve and Wavus is a time of great joy andanticipation. Soon the Jewell Hall construction sawdust willbe swept up and furniture & appliances put in place. Schoolkids and military veterans from far and wide will make theirway to this magical, healing place of wonder. The SnowgooseIII will splash into Muscongus Bay, ready to carry campersand Audubon friends on missions of discovery. The myriadof wilderness trip permits will be secured, supplies ordered, leaves raked, grass and gardens planted, docks and boatslaunched, and 18 wheelers of food will trundle down thenew road into campus. The counselors will arrive full ofraw energy and enthusiasm followed by over 1,000 wideeyedcampers ready to see their old friends, meet new onesfrom all over the world, and continue their journey towardgrowing up. What a great place! The beat goes on.Faithfully yours,Henry R. Kennedy,Executive DirectorEliza Greenman from DLWA working on pruning the orchard at theSouthover property.View from Punk Point "Southouver" looking westerly toward one of ourtwo islands.

wavus camp for girlsRecently, a colleague told meabout a company in Texas thatfor a fee of $500 will allow you to goback to kindergarten for a day. For$500 you can wear mismatched socks, finger paint, play with blocks, drinkapple juice, eat animal crackers andhave nap time. I was told they have awaiting list 3 months long! I am notsurprised. In a few short months I willbe blissfully experiencing the campequivalent of this act of regression. Onthe beautiful shores of DamariscottaLake, I will be joined by hundredsof women and girls spending thesummer swimming; slinging arrowsin archery; riding the zip line; doingyoga; tending the gardens; hikingMt. Katahdin, Mt. Washington, andMt. Battie; paddling the St. Croix, theAllagash, and the Penobscot Rivers;acting out skits; singing at the top ofour lungs; playing in an air guitar rockband - and engaging in thought andconversations that likely only happenin a sanctuary made of trees that openup to the sky. Even as the spring snowfalls past my window, I am countingdown the days!Truth be told, my entire professionallife has followed its particularcourse because of my summer campexperiences growing up. There Ilearned that camp has a special way ofchanging people, encouraging them todiscover their best and unique selves, and helping them grow. If you go onour website and look at the picturesof the girls throughout the summeryou will see that they are genuinelysmiling, they are strong, they are filledwith energy, most days they are coveredin paint or dirt, or both. But most ofThe Wavus Dream Team together again in2013!!First Session Maine Trails 2012 at the summit of Mt. Overthe years I learnedthat a meaningfulcamp communityis the product ofcaring attention, commitment toshared principles, and the actions of many people - fromcourageous leadership to small actsof kindness: concepts central to thelife and praxis of all things Wavus. To support our mission, this SpringI am working with Hardy Girls/Healthy Women (www.hghw.org)–a nationally recognized nonprofitorganization dedicated to the healthand well-being of girls and women-to learn their model for teaching andempowering girls. The Bridge Year on the HorizonThey wake up early to the soundsof gulls and sea birds. Stumblingout of sleeping bags and tents into thecool mist of the morning, young peopleand adults begin preparations forbreakfast and breaking down camp. This is a familiar scene for those whoare familiar with Kieve-Wavus . . . butrather than continuing down the trail, these young people will pack up campto head down the beach and await thehigh tide and the sea-run salmon whoare returning to historical spawninggrounds on the Penobscot River inMaine, United States. As they wait forthe tide and the first fish it will usherin, they will cue their iPads to streamlive video of salmon for friends andcollaborators from around the worldwho have contributed to their workand research in a Field Study called“Coastal Waterways”.These students are a part of Kieve-Wavus’ new program, The Bridge Year,a year-long coeducational boardingschool for 24 rising 9th graders.Launching in Fall 2014, The BridgeYear blends the history, missionand strengths of Kieve-Wavus withrigorous intellectual pursuits. In partnership with localDirector of Studies Thomas Steele-Maley and students immersed in the fall colors of DamariscottaLake as they compare timing of leaf changing here with data from other parts of the state.Wabanaki communities, businessleaders, universities, conservationorganizations and regional agencies, they will have contributed waterquality sampling, mapping and GISsupport, ethnographic research, salmon monitoring, evasive speciesremoval, and more to the dam removaland restoration work along nativesalmon spawning corridors. Theirstudy will be intense and memorable. The students weaveboth academics andservice into their“core” themes ofs t u d y ; s o c i e t y,e n v i r o n m e n tand economics, and in doing so,making meaningfulcontributions to support and benefitlocal Maine communities. The curriculum at The Bridge Year isstudent driven and project based withinnovative field studies. Seven TwisterWe sit in the canoehe’sin the back. I’m in the front.A tapered leader twists in theevening breeze. He hands me the green fly box,and I open it in awe:thirty years of collection andselection. But I don’t want the green box.I reach for the steel case -the selection of flies like no otherThat box was handmade in England, you know.Your grandpa tied all the flies inthere.I pop it open.Fingers touchthe black strong bristlesof a leech pattern grasshopper.Eyes scanthe streaming yellow feather of aMickey Finn.Finally.I find it,the perfect fly:small brown plumes on both sideswith a soft white tuft on top.I remove it from the foam ridge. That’s a great fly, Dad comments.I slip the line through the eyeand tie it on.Such a little knotnever madesuch a strong connection.-Wallace Jackson2013 River of Words FinalistKieve South Harrington 2012Online NewsletterWe post this newsletter in pdf formatonline if you would like to “save a tree”or forward it on to a family who mightbe interested in camp. TLS UPDATE 2013!Once again we have an incredible Leadership School staff back for the spring season! At Kieve-Wavus, The LeadershipSchool(TLS) Educators arefortunate to work and live in a smalltight-knit community of individualsdedicated to providing students withthe best possible opportunities forlearning and growth. Their dailywork is not only with and for students-- it is with and for each other -- andincludes collaboration, giving andreceiving support, exploring challengesand celebrating successes. In theirhumility, their empathy and theirhumor, TLS Educators embody thenumber one rule, “Everyone deservesto be treated with kindness andrespect.” Their collaborative teachingis a great model for collaborativelearning and the visiting studentsand teachers as well as the Educatorsbenefit from this vibrant, supportiveenvironment. This year, in addition to servingstudents and teachers during Outreachand Residential programs, we havedone focused workshops with schoolfaculty and staff at multiple schools.TLS staff have facilitated workshopsto improve communication andcooperation, to build trust, to sharethe experiential model or simplyto show teachers how to “Kieve– it- up”, as Memorial Middle SchoolPrincipal Megan Welter describes it.As TLS Educators share the skills andactivities from their bag of tricks withteachers and administrators, they arereally sharing aspects of Kieve-Wavusphilosophy and lifestyle.K i n d n e s s , Re s p e c t , C o u ra g e,Perseverance, Responsibility andLoyalty are not just words; they arefoundations for our thoughts, actionsand reactions. Not surprisingly, thesesame words can be found in manyschool mission statements too. Howcan we help schools live their missionsin an era of high stakes testing, tightening budgets and commoncore standards? “It’s easy,” says RobReilly, Adventure Course Director.“Step out of your comfort zone. Playtogether and laugh.” After hostinga group of teachers from BoothbayRegion Elementary School, Educator inResidence Courtney Krolikoski noticedthat an afternoon with Rob Reilly andReid Anderson in the Buck buildinghad “noticeably shifted energy in theentire school.”As The Leadership School continuesto provide incredible programs andopportunities for the young peopleof Maine and New England, wewill continue seeking new ways todevelop deeper and more meaningfulrelationships with entire communities. As the Educator in Residence program(see pg. 7) and the increasing numberof teacher workshops demonstrate, the impact of our work can be heldand perpetuated in the hearts andminds of not only the students, butalso the teachers and administrators.TLS is embracing these emergingavenues for supporting “our schools”while expanding the impact andimplementation of the Kieve-Wavusmission.remember when...Dining in Pasquaney hasn’t really changed thatmuch, the critters on the wall still oversee the PQkitchen’s delicious meals!13

Kieve Veterans CampHi Everyone! By the time youread this we will be wrappingup another fantastic year of VeteransCamp programs. We had a great timelast fall at the Wavus Camp for ourtwo, “End of summer,” camps andthen moved the operation over toKieve for Vietnam Veterans, WomenVeterans, and this Spring’s FamilyCamp.Community volunteers continue tosupport our programming and enrichour activities for veterans. This seasonwe welcomed local Veteran-Poetswho read some of their work duringVietnam Camp. The following day, writer and poet Gary Lawless, ownerof Gulf of Maine Books in Brunswick, led a well-attended afternoon poetryworkshop. On Thursday eveningour guests read some very movingpoems they had written during theweek. Another new activity thisseason was fly-tying. DamariscottaRealtor and Veterans Camp volunteerPeter Christine coordinated fly-tyingexperts from the Kennebec Chapterof Trout Unlimited, L.L. Bean, andcommunities surrounding Kieve-Wavus. It was a great time for allinvolved!Over the past four years we’ve had somany wonderful volunteers like localacupuncturists and massage therapists, special programming leaders, andcommunity members that just want tohelp out any way they can. I thought Iwould highlight a few of them who’vebeen with us for many years:Alan BaldwinIf you’ve spent any time at Kieve thenyou’ve met Alan Baldwin. Alan cameto Kieve in June 1966 where he says hefelt that he’d found his rightful home. After returning to camp each summerhe eventually met Mollie, who wasthen the camp nurse. Alan and Molliewere married in the Kieve chapel in1972.They settled in DamariscottaMills, raised two daughters, andjust recently celebrated their 40 thanniversary. In 1999 Dick Kennedyinsisted that Alan acquaint himself22with the Kieve pottery shop where he’sbeen a fixture ever since. In additionto owning/operating his framingshop in downtown Damariscotta, volunteering at the 9/11 Family Camp, and mentoring legions of summercampers, Alan has been a volunteerat Veterans Camp since its beginning.Amongst his duties he manages thepottery firings, recycles clay, andshows avid young (and old) pottershow best to achieve ceramic success.Of his time as a volunteer, Alan says,“The Veterans Camp and the 9/11Camp have become an important partof my life.”David PatchDavid, a 25-year Navy veteran, enlistedin 1961, graduated from the US NavalAcademy in 1966 and served twentyyears aboard various naval ships.Following his military career, Davidbegan a career with small businessesand ultimately, in partnership withothers, launched eight technologystart-ups (most in the defense sector).David retired from his second career in2011. A resident of Boothbay Harbor, hebecame acquainted with Kieve-Wavusin 2010 while island-camping off of thecoast of Maine. A group of campersand counselors came ashore and inconversation spoke about Kieve-Wavusand its programs. Later that fall, Davidstopped by and was introduced to DickKennedy who told him about ourVeterans Camp. David is currently onthe Kieve-Wavus Advisory Board andas a Veterans Camp volunteer you’llfind him lighting the fire in Innisfree, raising the flag before breakfast, pushing plates through the washeror talking to campers. Of his timeas a volunteer, David says, “Havinghad three deployments to Vietnamduring the war era and several otherspost-Vietnam, I think I have a uniqueunderstanding of the difficulties ofreturning home after being gone for ayear at a time.”Sharon Morrison, RNSharon hails from Boston and hasworked as a nurse with Boston’sHealth Care for the Homeless Programfor the past fifteen years. From 2004to 2009 she served as a member ofthe faculty of the National HealthCare for the Homeless Council whereshe designed curriculum and taughthealth care providers nationwideabout the unique health care needsof the homeless. She’s the author

of numerous publications aimed atassisting providers in adapting theirpractices to better serve homelesspatients with issues including: diabetescare, women’s health, and the uniqueneeds of Vietnam Veterans’ end oflife care. In 2010, she received theBoston Business Journal’s Championsin Health Care Award for her workon improving the lives of homelesspatients living with chronic illnesses. She currently works in an outpatientclinic serving Veterans of the ArmedServices. There she brings to her worka perspective that blends both Easternand Western traditions of care. Whennot working, Sharon enjoys bakingbread, photography and spendingtime in the gracious company ofanimals. In 2011, after viewing a PBSspecial outlining Kieve-Wavus’ work tosupport returning veterans and theirfamilies, Sharon joined our effortsas a volunteer. Here, she steps awayfrom her work as a nurse and findsa myriad of ways to incorporate herinterests with her desire to supportthe men and women who have servedin the Armed Forces.Kirk R. Grant, LCSWKirk served nine years in the US Armyas a Communications Paratrooperwith 1 st Special Forces Group (A) from1996 – 2005 and endured multipledeployments during his last five yearsof service. After leaving the Armyin 2005 he attended the University ofMaine (Orono) where he earned hisBSW and MSW. He started workingat the Portland Vet Center in 2010 asa readjustment counselor for combatveterans and their families. Kirklearned about Veterans Camp throughour collaboration with Portland’s VetCenter and began volunteering at ourprogram soon after, in the fall of 2010.Kirk lives in the Portland area, is a teaconnoisseur, and is actively involvedwith several programs supportingVeteran’s readjustment throughoutMaine and New England.Steve “Scrape” Spooner:Steve is a Maine native and was draftedin December, 1967. An Infantryman,he served for 30 months in combatwith the 173 rd Airborne Brigade(Separate) in Viet Nam. Steve returnedto Maine and struggled with his lifefor more than a decade following histour of duty. He made sweeping lifechangesin 1984, and in 1987 he wentto work at the Androscoggin PaperMill in Jay, Maine where, “I stayed andrebuilt my life,” until his retirementthis year. Four years ago he joined theCombat Vets Motorcycle Associationwhich led him to the Lewiston VetsCenter. Because of the Vet Center, Stevesays, “I have learned that there is noforgetting who I was, nor what hadhappened to us all during that timewe spent in combat.” His experiencein Vietnam, combined with nearly 42years of dealing with the aftermathof war, gives Steve a unique and deepunderstanding of the difficult hurdlesreturning veterans have during theirreintegration to civilian life. Stevewas a guest at our very first VietnamVeterans Camp and is the organizerand driving force behind the Burgers,Bikes, and Rods fundraising rideeach year. Of his time as a volunteer,Steve says, “After attending the first everCamp for Viet Nam Veterans I had such apositive experience it became very clearthat I wanted to do anything I could tohelp these newest warriors with theirtransition back home to their families, andthe community.”Our volunteers are wonderful andgiving of themselves in every way. Weare forever grateful for their time andtireless efforts given to the VeteransCamp programs. Keep an eye out formore volunteer profiles in upcomingnewsletters.CommunityClimb NightThe second Friday of each month localcommunity members are invited to the climbin Buck. FARMS 2013 Garden Enrichment Program for Kieve-WavusWe’re looking forward to another great growing season producing lots of fresh vegetables at bothcamps.FARMS (Focus on Agriculture in RuralMaine Schools) is very excited to returnto both Kieve and Wavus camps tocontinue the garden enrichmentprogram that was started in the 2012season. FARMS is a local non-profitorganization that connects classrooms, farms, cafeterias, and communitiesthrough hands-on educationalprograms. During the 2012 summer,Kieve and Wavus campers learned allabout maintaining a garden throughhands-on activities such as directseeding, transplanting, trellising, pruning, weeding, composting,pest-management, and harvesting.Simultaneously, the FARMS GardenProgram curriculum educates aboutthe environmental and health benefitsof organic gardening and supportinglocal agriculture. All produce wasdonated to the camp cafeterias and/or used in Taste Tests directly inthe gardens. The FARMS GardenProgram was a success thanks to thecollaboration, enthusiasm, and hardwork of many members of the Kieve-Wavus community including staff infood service, maintenance, education, leadership, administration, and ofcourse, campers!24An exciting addition to the 2013 Kieve-Wavus FARMS Garden Program is thecollaboration with The LeadershipSchool and Jefferson Village School(JVS). The Kieve garden program willkick-off this spring by incorporatingThe Leadership School studentsand staff into the planning anddevelopment of the garden for thefirst time. Students from all over thestate of Maine will be at Kieve learningeverything about starting a gardenthrough hands-on activities such assoil testing, seed starting, gardendesign, amending the soil, and directseeding. At Wavus, students fromJVS will assist in the planting of a fallgarden which summer campers willhelp maintain, and in the fall Wavuswill donate the produce to the FARMSFarm to School Program to be used inTaste Tests at JVS.The FARMS Garden Program is anatural fit for Kieve-Wavus. Gardensare a fun way to directly promote theeducational mission of Kieve-Wavus.Gardening activities build leadershipand teamwork skills by teachingresponsibility, cooperation, andpatience, and promote the values ofkindness, respect, and environmentalstewardship.
