Seven TwisterWe sit in the canoehe’sin the back. I’m in the front.A tapered leader twists in theevening breeze. He hands me the green fly box,and I open it in awe:thirty years of collection andselection. But I don’t want the green box.I reach for the steel case -the selection of flies like no otherThat box was handmade in England, you know.Your grandpa tied all the flies inthere.I pop it open.Fingers touchthe black strong bristlesof a leech pattern grasshopper.Eyes scanthe streaming yellow feather of aMickey Finn.Finally.I find it,the perfect fly:small brown plumes on both sideswith a soft white tuft on top.I remove it from the foam ridge. That’s a great fly, Dad comments.I slip the line through the eyeand tie it on.Such a little knotnever madesuch a strong connection.-Wallace Jackson2013 River of Words FinalistKieve South Harrington 2012Online NewsletterWe post this newsletter in pdf formatonline if you would like to “save a tree”or forward it on to a family who mightbe interested in camp.
