Their dailywork is not only with and for students-- it is with and for each other -- andincludes collaboration, giving andreceiving support, exploring challengesand celebrating successes. In theirhumility, their empathy and theirhumor, TLS Educators embody thenumber one rule, “Everyone deservesto be treated with kindness andrespect.” Their collaborative teachingis a great model for collaborativelearning and the visiting studentsand teachers as well as the Educatorsbenefit from this vibrant, supportiveenvironment. This year, in addition to servingstudents and teachers during Outreachand Residential programs, we havedone focused workshops with schoolfaculty and staff at multiple schools.TLS staff have facilitated workshopsto improve communication andcooperation, to build trust, to sharethe experiential model or simplyto show teachers how to “Kieve– it- up”, as Memorial Middle SchoolPrincipal Megan Welter describes it.As TLS Educators share the skills andactivities from their bag of tricks withteachers and administrators, they arereally sharing aspects of Kieve-Wavusphilosophy and lifestyle.K i n d n e s s , Re s p e c t , C o u ra g e,Perseverance, Responsibility andLoyalty are not just words; they arefoundations for our thoughts, actionsand reactions. Not surprisingly, thesesame words can be found in manyschool mission statements too. Howcan we help schools live their missionsin an era of high stakes testing, tightening budgets and commoncore standards? “It’s easy,” says RobReilly, Adventure Course Director.“Step out of your comfort zone. Playtogether and laugh.” After hostinga group of teachers from BoothbayRegion Elementary School, Educator inResidence Courtney Krolikoski noticedthat an afternoon with Rob Reilly andReid Anderson in the Buck buildinghad “noticeably shifted energy in theentire school.”As The Leadership School continuesto provide incredible programs andopportunities for the young peopleof Maine and New England, wewill continue seeking new ways todevelop deeper and more meaningfulrelationships with entire communities. As the Educator in Residence program(see pg. 7) and the increasing numberof teacher workshops demonstrate, the impact of our work can be heldand perpetuated in the hearts andminds of not only the students, butalso the teachers and administrators.TLS is embracing these emergingavenues for supporting “our schools”while expanding the impact andimplementation of the Kieve-Wavusmission.remember when...Dining in Pasquaney hasn’t really changed thatmuch, the critters on the wall still oversee the PQkitchen’s delicious meals!13
