Having toomuch of a good thing, or even enoughof everything. At other times, laziness, self‐absorption, self‐satisfaction, frustration, too much praise, or lack ofchallenge. All these things turn usinward and close us off from hearing ornoticing that we need to get out ofourselves. Growing toward fuller lifemeans shaking ourselves out ofcomplacency, hearing and acceptingnew challenges, and seeing the good weare called to do.In today’s gospel, Jesus’ parable pointsto God’s loving concern for those whoare in need now and to the abundanceand consolation they will receive in theage to come. It is done through theparable of the rich man.How could the rich man possiblyhave missed the sick, suffering andhungry beggar right at his door? Fromthe afterlife, the rich man begs Abrahamto send Lazarus to warn his brothers. His request tells us that he simply didnot notice or did not take seriously thisopportunity for compassion and serviceduring his life. The warning may nothave reached the rich man’s brothers, but it does reach us. His unawarenesschallenges us to open our eyes to theLazarus at our door. The rich man hadmore than enough food to share withLazarus—what surpluses do we have inlife? Who might be grateful even for ascrap of these?Jesus teaches us how to see those inneed around us and reach out inconcern. So, time to leave complacency!Scott W.
