6.1.5 Secondh<strong>and</strong> (used) materials which are contaminated with anything other than theadulterants listed in Section 6.1.3, shall be sanitized as set forth in Section 6.2 of these<strong>Regulations</strong>.6.1.6 <strong>Mattresses</strong> containing a porous material or fabric shall be sanitized by using the dry heatmethod in Section 6.2, unless an application requesting the use of an alternate methodhas been submitted <strong>and</strong> approved by the Health Authority as allowed for in Section 6.1.1.6.1.7 Newly manufactured or repaired articles of bedding that contain any secondh<strong>and</strong> fillingmaterials shall have either the filling or the article sanitized before they are offered for saleor distributed.6.1.8 Baled filling materials shall not be sanitized while still in the bale.6.1.9 Detachable mattresses <strong>and</strong> pads within sleeper sofas shall be removed from sucharticles for sanitization.6.2 Heat treatment-dry heat method6.2.1 The dry heat method may be used to sanitize mattresses, box springs, or similar itemscovered in whole by a porous material or fabric.6.2.2 Prior to the first use of any equipment for dry heat sanitization, the equipment must betested for its ability to consistently reach the desired temperatures. The testing processmust either be observed by an agent or agents of the Health Authority or an appropriatewritten third-party confirmation of the testing results must be provided to the HealthAuthority. No articles or materials shall be sanitized by the subject equipment until theHealth Authority reviews <strong>and</strong> approves the test results.6.2.3 In sanitizing by the dry heat method a temperature of 230°F shall be maintained in allparts of an approved chamber for such a period of time as may be necessary forsanitization, which shall in no case be less than one (1) hour, fifteen (15) minutes.6.2.4 All chambers shall be equipped with racks or devices <strong>and</strong> the articles to be sanitizedshall be so placed therein so that complete circulation of heat <strong>and</strong> gases around everyarticle being sanitized shall be attained.6.2.5 All chambers shall be insulated sufficiently to ensure maintenance of temperature <strong>and</strong>shall be tightly sealed to prevent any leakage of gases. A thermostat shall be connectedwith the heating device to provide <strong>and</strong> maintain a reasonably uniform temperature at 230°Fplus or minus 5°F.6.2.6 The sanitization conditions of 230°F for not less than one (1) hour, fifteen (15) minutesmay be changed to conditions of 205°F for not less that one (1) hour, thirty (30) minutes forfoam products which suffer physical degradation at the 230°F temperature.6.2.7 A suitable recording device such as a data logger which provides a written record,approved by the Health Authority, shall be installed <strong>and</strong> maintained to record the time <strong>and</strong>temperature prevailing in the sanitization chamber during the entire operation.- 24 -
