DISTRIBUTION<br />
EEC: Central and south France, Italy, Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica and<br />
Greece.<br />
Europe: SE Slovakia only (182), Hungary, Yugoslavia, Albania, Austria,<br />
W Rumania, Bulgaria (Beron, pers. comm.), N Iberian peninsula.<br />
World: Mediterranean zone of S Europe and N Africa and east to<br />
Turkestan and Iran.<br />
HABITAT<br />
Little known. Mostly found in wooded country and generally<br />
roosts in caves.<br />
POPULATION<br />
EEC: Little known. Declines noted in breeding colonies but little<br />
exact information available.<br />
Europe:<br />

France: Only 2 records in the Isère department, one ringed in<br />
1958, and one captured in February 1971 in Balme-les-Grottes<br />
(157).<br />
Uncommon in Rhone-Alpes region; in the Ardèche used to<br />
form important colonies, eg in the Grotte de Saint-Marcel more<br />
than 1000 individuals (219). Extinct in Ain but breeds in small<br />
numbers in the Jura (Rolandez, pers. comm. 5/1981). However,<br />
Tupinier (pers. comm.) suggests this species is extinct in<br />
France.<br />
Czechoslovakia: Recent large declines in populations are<br />
reported, although some colonies of 100-200 remain. The total
