HeadlineGitnang LuzonSEPTEMBER 13-15, 20135On Wednesday last week,Japanese officials visitedthe Subic Bay FreeportZone (Subic) to observe the conversionresults and the effortsmade in developingthis former UnitedStates Military NavalBase into an economiczone. One of theiraims was to learnabout Subic’s experiencein the conversionand what madeit into a developedeconomic hub, in thehands of Filipinos.iWritetomas m. garcia***For several years since the lastUS military personnel at Subicstepped out and bid goodbye tothis once premier military base inthe Pacific region, Subic Freeportofficials have managed to maintainthe facilities, installationsand other vital components of theformer naval base.***The visiting Japanese officialswere composed of Ichita Yamamoto,Japan’s Minister of State forOkinawa and Northern TerritoriesAffairs, Motomi Inoue, directorgeneralfor Okinawa Affairs; AkioIsomata, a minister from the JapaneseEmbassy in the Philippines;and Masaru Ikeda, director forpolicy coordination for OkinawaAffairs. While surfing the net,my attention wascaught by a newsabout an eight-year-old Yemenigirl who died in herwedding night. It wasgruesome and totally unacceptablein our modernsociety. She marrieda man five times herage with the approval ofher parents to emancipatethem from raisinga child and to earn extramoney from the dowry given tothe girl. She suffered internalbleeding and uterine rapturewhich caused her death.Justice was not given to hersince the local authorities tookno legal actions against theparents and the husband. Authoritieseven tried to cover upher death to avoid controversy.I could not imagine the painshe endured while having sexualintercourse with her olderhusband. A child knows nothingabout this sexual stuff. Aneight-year-old girl is supposedlyenjoying her childhood withher dolls, not with a man.Traditions in some countriessuck. I totally condemn theOn Subic***They were on a three-day visitto Subic and Clark. The latter isanother US military base in thePhilippines which was also convertedinto a FreeportZone. Clark is likewiseconsidered a potentialfor further developmenthaving its own internationalairport.***The said former military basesare considered as models of militarybases conversion. This meansthat they are successful in thiskind of transformations from formermilitary facilities into zonesof economic activities such asmanufacturing, business processinghubs, chips and other electronicproductions and tourism, among others. On child marriage“Traditions in somecountries suck. I totallycondemn the practiceand custom of childmarriages”“The visiting officials werelikewise surprised how skillful, resilient and hardworkingFilipinos are.”Now WeKnow!practice and custom of childmarriages. This is a form ofcruelty and abuse toour children. Childrenare deprivedof their youth byELLEZ J. DAVIOinstalling them theresponsibilities ofa grown-up individual. Humanrights activists demandthe total abolition of the saidtradition, however, some stillpractice the tradition becauseof poverty. It is a sad notethat children suffer the consequencesof the scarcity in lifeand even worse, their lives areat peril due to wealth issues. There should be a total ban onchild marriages and the UnitedNations should take actions toprevent more deaths and to ensurethe bright future of thechildren in most Arab countries.Want to broaden your business horizon?LET US HELP YOU!CALL US: (045)435-0938 • 436-1576 • EMAIL US: headlinegitnangluzon@gmail.comVISIT US: 2nd Floor, U2 Bldg., MacArthur Hiway, Dolores, City of San Fernando (P)***The Japanese were impressed. This means that the two economiczones are in good hands since theconversion. It seems that we didn’tfail not only in the conversions butalso in maintaining the said economicfacilities. We never allowedthem to rot in futility.***The visiting officials were likewisesurprised how skillful, resilientand hardworking Filipinosare. Credit is due not only to formerand present officialsof the two economiczones but also to investorsand the thousandsof workers who are employedin different locationsand investors insidethe facilities.***Yamamoto has equated strongleadership with strong development,a quality, he said, reposed inSubic Bay Metropolitan Authority(SBMA) Roberto Garcia. He recognized, too, Subic’s container portterminal, shipbuilding and drydock facilities as great potentialsin furtherance of development.***The G.I. Joes may have beengone, but after years of struggles, leadership and commitment, Subic, including Clark, remains to beAmerican legacies that are beingtaken care of by Filipinos.***For other opinions, comments, suggestions or adverse reactions, you may reach iWrite at 0919-5107665. ●My heart cries for justice forthis child. I could not bear thethought of her agony. Iwant to curse her parentsfor their action.I know that povertyis the root of all implausibledeeds butto put your child’s lifein danger because ofpersonal wants is unthinkable. As parents,we have the obligationto provide themtheir needs, not theother way around. Wehave responsibilitiesto make their futureilluminating and prepare themagainst the perils of the worldwith courage and utmost dignity. It is once said that the moraltest of government is how thatgovernment treats those whoare at the dawn of life--the children. And no man should bringchildren into the world if he isunwilling to persevere to theend for the sake of their natureand education. May God blessthe soul of the Yemeni childand welcome her with delightfor she will never to experiencethe pain of life again. He-he. This is in keeping on the claim na Angelesis number 8 in the catagory of world class cities! ●
