Copel<strong>and</strong> Home Open House<strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> <strong>Prairie</strong>’s historic Copel<strong>and</strong>Home, 125 SW Dallas St., willcelebrate the holidays with anopen house from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.Saturday, Dec. 1, <strong>2012</strong>. Guides willgive tours <strong>and</strong> answer questionsabout the quaint 100-year-oldhome during the open house. Toget to the home, from Main orJefferson streets in <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> <strong>Prairie</strong>,turn south on SW 2nd Street, <strong>and</strong> east on SW Dallas Street. <strong>The</strong> openhouse, tours <strong>and</strong> refreshments are free.Located within the original town site <strong>of</strong> <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> <strong>Prairie</strong>, the Copel<strong>and</strong> Homewas built in 1902 by B.P. Hale <strong>and</strong> his wife, Ruth. <strong>The</strong> home was purchasedby the Copel<strong>and</strong> family in 1908.<strong>The</strong> white clapboard home, styled for the farm-type, small town resident,was designed with a high pitched ro<strong>of</strong>, narrow windows <strong>and</strong> a back doorentrance. <strong>The</strong> original five rooms had 12-foot ceilings, a living room, diningroom, kitchen, bedroom <strong>and</strong> study. A bathroom <strong>and</strong> enclosed back porchhave been added. <strong>The</strong> beautiful oak hardwood floors, interior woodwork,front door <strong>and</strong> windows are original. <strong>The</strong> original fireplace was removedby the Copel<strong>and</strong> family to make room for two closets.<strong>The</strong> entrance hallway is unique to the time period <strong>and</strong> includes a classicornamental antique hall divider display made <strong>of</strong> cherry wood.Before remodeling the home, Dr. Copel<strong>and</strong> had a garden area <strong>and</strong> afour-acre orchard. <strong>The</strong> orchard l<strong>and</strong> was presented to First PresbyterianChurch in 1948 as a gift from the Copel<strong>and</strong> family.Furniture in the home’s study includes a desk dated from the 1800s setjust as Dr. Copel<strong>and</strong> used it, holding his physician’s bag <strong>and</strong> books donatedby his family.<strong>City</strong> Offers Free Class for InterestedFirst-time HomebuyersNews<strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> <strong>Prairie</strong> Police Youth BoxingProgram Underway, Coaches Needed<strong>The</strong> <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> <strong>Prairie</strong> Police Youth BoxingProgram currently needs more volunteercoaches as the popular program continuesto grow.More than 30 youth ages 13 to 16 meetnearly every day with a team <strong>of</strong> volunteercoaches who not only teach participantshow to box but also help students developleadership skills to succeed in life outside the boxing ring.If you are an experienced boxing coach interested in volunteering,please contact Alex Bielawski at gpboxing@gptx.org.<strong>The</strong> <strong>Gr<strong>and</strong></strong> <strong>Prairie</strong> Police Youth Boxing Program meets in the gym atHouston Elementary School, 1502 College St., between 4:30 p.m. <strong>and</strong>6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.<strong>The</strong> program is funded through community <strong>and</strong> corporate donations,providing a clean, safe <strong>and</strong> well-equipped environment for youth totrain <strong>and</strong> prepare for competition.
