Chair’s Report2004 was a positive year for Queensland Theatre Companyof artistic highlights, significant advancements in our goalof developing Queensland artists and writers, as well ascontinuing our strengths in the youth and education sectors. The Company has ended the year with a surplus of $11,953,which highlights the continued stringent cost control ofexpenditure in a climate of uncertainty in box office andother earned revenue. The large capacity of the Playhouseremains a great challenge to the Company’s desire tobuilding box office, as the seasons scheduled in that venuecannot provide sufficient time for audience word of mouth tobuild audience numbers. The 2004 result brings the Company’s overall position to$1,565,000 in accumulated reserves. With approximatelyhalf of the Company’s annual revenue derived from volatilebox office and the corporate sector this is a very pleasingresult considering that just nine years ago the Company’scumulative reserves had been reduced to just $26,000.Funding from State and Federal Governments continuesto be vital and the Company extends its gratitude to bothGovernments for investing in the state and national culturethrough Queensland Theatre Company. I would like to takethis opportunity to thank the State Government, and mostparticularly the Minister for Education and Arts, the HonAnna Bligh MP, for her support and assistance of QueenslandTheatre Company.I thank the Board members for their constant support andguidance for the Company. I would like to pay special tributeto outgoing Board members Glyn Davis, David Harrison andKevin Radbourne. Thanks should also go to Artistic Director,Michael Gow, for his leadership, commitment and abilityto continue to surprise and delight our audiences, and toGeneral Manager Libby Anstis and staff for their amazingresponse to the constant demands of a very challengingenvironment. Finally, I would say a big thank you to ouraudiences who continue to demonstrate their appreciationfor the theatre we bring to them.In 2004, the Company used some of its reserves througha major investment in upgrading the seats in Bille BrownStudio – a popular decision with Season Ticket Holders andother audience members of this intimate venue. The Company presented a total of 375 performances toQueensland audiences, playing to more than 90,000 peoplethroughout the State. There were 260 performances in theCompany’s Brisbane season. The Company performed nineproductions in its mainstage season.Dr Kate FoyChairSponsorship levels remained strong in 2004 with totalcash and in kind contribution of more than $380,000. TheCompany extends sincere thanks to major sponsors CITEC,Deacons Lawyers, Ergon Energy, John Holland Group andOrigin Energy. Thanks go also to Brisbane Marriott Hotel,Commonwealth Bank, Orlando Wyndham, Palace Centro andSun Microsystems for their continued support. Our sponsorsof The Queensland Premier’s Drama Award - Theatre andPublic Life, BDO Kendalls and Griffith University, continue toassist in the development of Queensland playwrights.6A n n u a l R e p o r t

Artistic Director’s Report2004 was a year of new opportunities at Queensland TheatreCompany. My fifth season with the Company focused on ourcontinuing commitment to the development of creative talentincluding writers, actors and directors. While special fundingfor our Emerging Artists’ Program came to an end, we werepleased to continue this program with two ensemble actorsand two associate directors. We continued our innovative regional partnerships program, working with artists in Bundaberg, Cairns, Clermont, Mackay,Toowoomba, Townsville, Sunshine Coast and surroundingdistricts. We were thrilled to develop a new partnership withWestern Cape College in Weipa. In 2004 we collaboratedfor the first time with regional theatre company HotHouseTheatre to produce one of our hit seasons of the year, EatingIce Cream With Your Eyes Closed. Our nine play mainstage program promised ‘live action’which we delivered in a year of unpredictable theatre. The year took off with a laugh with The Real InspectorHound/Black Comedy double bill, closely followed bySteve Martin’s adaptation of The Underpants. Partnershipswith the ENERGEX Brisbane Festival and QPAC provided anopportunity for a lavish production of the Australian classicmusical, The Venetian Twins. Proof and Copenhagen oneafter the other delivered a maths/science theme and theproduction of The Cherry Orchard provoked audiences andcritics to reconsider this classic in its centenary year. Theyear ended on a thought-provoking and rather solemn notewith God is a DJ and the chilling Far Away.My thanks go to Chair Dr Kate Foy and the Board membersfor their continued support and contribution; the Company’sloyal and dedicated staff and all of the artists who workedwith the Company during the year. Thanks also goes to theState and Federal Governments, particularly The Hon AnnaBligh MP for her recognition of the Company’s needs. Therehas also been excellent support from the corporate sectorwho recognise that great theatre makes Queensland anattractive place to do business. Finally, I’d like to thank the audiences who support theCompany and its artists by attending our productions in suchnumbers. In 2004, the Company played to almost 93,000people throughout the State, and many more engagedwith the company through our education and accessprograms. We endorse our commitment to the audiencesin our strategic plan and in our values. We will continue toentertain, challenge and strive to continue providing greattheatre for our audiences.Michael GowArtistic DirectorWe are always seeking to provide a career path for the trulytalented individual. In this way we build for the future. In2004 Queensland Theatre Company provided 553 creativepositions to freelance theatre practitioners, of which 521were Queensland residents. We employed two full-timeactors and two full-time directors. We commissioned DavidBrown, the writer of Eating Ice Cream With Your Eyes Closed, and identified and developed the winning script for TheQueensland Premier's Drama Award - Theatre and PublicLife, Mano Nera, by Adam Grossetti. The Company’s Youth & Education program presented85 performances in regional Queensland. The Brisbanecomponent of this program connected with over 10,000young Queenslanders. When mainstage and regionalproduction attendances are taken into account, over 26,000school age children accessed the program in 2004. EdOnline, a web based program introduced in 2002, providedalmost 800 students with the opportunity to speak withartists and discuss productions online.A n n u a l R e p o r t7

The prospectof critical public exposure (in the form of the readings atthe culmination of the commissioning process) created apositive sense of urgency to engage with the dramaturgicalprocess offered by Peter Mathieson, Ursula Dauth, MichaelGow and the actors - to really strive to listen and get this‘right’ - in order to come up with an intelligent and wellcraftedpiece of writing within the allotted time frame. I wasforced to crystallise my ideas and articulate a structure for‘Constance’ from the piece’s inception, rather than at theend of the first draft, as had previously been my habit. I’velearned some good habits - some positive dramaturgicalprinciples as a result of the Premier’s Award that I know Iwill apply to all of my writing in the future. I was supportedand made to feel welcome and ‘invested in’ by all at theCompany, and feel more firmly integrated in the Queenslandtheatre community as a result.Stephen CarletonAs a young and emerging playwright, the opportunity towork with professional artists in The Works was excitingand extremely productive. The development provided inThe Works has proven invaluable as my play, I Witness, iscurrently being commissioned as a full-length play.Aedan WhyattStage Manager:Assistant Stage Manager:Allana SheardErin LynchA n n u a l R e p o r t 31
