Tommy is a junior at West Point,majoring in Management. Derek is a sophomoreat West Point, majoring in Electrical Engineeringwith a minor in Arabic.Sam Helvie ‘05, a junior at UC Berkeley, was namedthe PAC-10 Diver of the Month for January <strong>2008</strong>. Lastyear, Helvie was an honorable mention All-American,placing 12th on the one-meter board at the 2007 NCAAChampionships. He was also the January 2007 Pac-10Diver of the Month and was a second-team Pac-10All-Academic selection. Helvie is the Cal school recordholder in the one-meter, three-meter and platform.Joe Whittington ‘04, a senior atCal Berkeley, was a member of the Bears'200 free relay that placed third during thefirst day of the <strong>2008</strong> NCAA championshipsin Federal Way, Wash.Zak Geissel ’04 graduated from the KernCounty Fire Academy on February 8, <strong>2008</strong>, andis currently assigned to the Delano Station.Meghan Stanley ‘06 and PeachesBaula ‘05 were named to the GonzagaUniversity’s President’s List for Fall 2007.The Class of 1950’s FridayNight Prayer GroupOn the first Friday of every month,six members of the Class of 1950 gettogether and play poker. This groupof men have been playing pokerreligiously since they graduated 58years ago. The six originalmembers are: Don Border,Jim Jett, Ken Peters,Jim Feliz, George Richaud,and Joe Green. The group takesturns hosting their “prayer meetings”and rotate from house to house eachmonth. When they first beganplaying, they would start at 8 o’clockand end in the wee morning hours.Now, they start at 6 o’clock andeveryone is home by 10:30 pm. Thegroup has added a couple of other<strong>Garces</strong> faces - Jerry Lamb ‘51and Dr. Richard Tucker.Alumni Cook for<strong>Garces</strong> <strong>Memorial</strong>’ s<strong>2008</strong> Casual Night GALAGermaine (Eyherabide) Jacobs ’74 andMary Kay (Jacobs) Atchison ’75 prepared adelicious dinner for the Casual Night Gala onMarch 7, <strong>2008</strong>, and won raves for their pasta.Germaine came up with the perfect recipe foreveryone to enjoy on a Friday evening during theLenten season. Other alumni cooks in the kitchenwere Bernadette (Eyherabide) Root ’78, Lori(Renzi) Hale ’74, and Chris Jacobs, ’74. On theevening of the Gala, Paul Andre’74, Meggan (Sill)Phillips ‘75 and Cindy (Summers) Anspach ’75also pitched in. Since so many of you asked for theirdelicious recipe, we decided to provide it toeveryone. Enjoy!The Gala Puttanesca6 T extra virgin olive oil2 cloves garlic, chopped1 – 14.5 oz. can diced tomatoes3 T capers¼ t red pepper flakes½ jar (or 4 oz.) pitted Kalamata olives2 t parsley, chopped1 – 2 oz. can of anchovies, chopped(anchovies are optional – but makes the dish!)1 lb. thick spaghettiParmesan CheeseSea Salt & Fresh Ground Black PepperBefore beginning pasta sauce, begin to bring a largepot of water to a boil to cook your pasta. To makethe pasta sauce, in a large sauce pan, add extra virginolive oil and sauté garlic over medium heat. Add canof tomatoes and simmer 10 minutes. Add capers,pepper flakes, olives, parsley and anchovies.Simmer sauce while you cook your pasta. By now,the water should be ready to cook your pasta. Addsalt to water and add pasta. Cook pasta perpackage instructions. When pasta is done, drain andtoss with sauce.
