Snapshot: 2009The 2008 Report to the Community was printed in mid-2009, but 2009 has already been such an exciting yearfor the Rock Hall that we just can’t wait until mid-2010to tell you about a few of the many highlights:An Incredible Induction WeekWhen we agreed to host the 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of FameInductions here in Cleveland, we made many promises. Wewanted to host a weeklong series of events so that all ofNortheast Ohio would have the opportunity to participate.We held more than a week of concerts, lectures, parties,classes and exhibits – everything that could possibly interesta music fan. We also pledged to do something that had neverbeen done before: allow fans to attend the ceremony itself.“That was the most amazing experience.Everyone from Bobby Womack to Elvis’band. Metallica – it doesn’t get muchharder than that. And having Jeff (Beck)there and Jimmy (Page), it was just afantastic night. Then of course it was inCleveland and there was five thousandfans there. The Moondog Coronation Ball and a free community concert at CSU’s Wolstein Center set attendees’feet tapping to everything from sweet soul music to hip-hop. Clevelanders flocked to a free tribute concert honoringgospel music legend Pastor Shirley Caesar. Ninety schools across the country experienced a special free live broadcastof the Rock Hall’s distance-learning program On the Road from the studios of Ideastream with 2009 Inductee Darryl“DMC” McDaniels of Run-D.M.C. As for the ceremony itself, Induction 2009 was a night that will go down in history.Visit www.rockhall.com/induction2009 for more details.A First for Springsteen and the MuseumAs unbelievable as it may seem, all-American singer, songwriter, and 1999 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, Bruce Springsteenhas never been the subject of a major museum exhibition – at least not until 2009. From Asbury Park to the Promised Land: TheLife and Music of Bruce Springsteen takes a comprehensive look at his career, from early bands Child, the Castiles and Steel Millthrough his work with the E Street Band and as a solo artist. Two floors of artifacts include several guitars, handwritten lyrics,Springsteen’s outfit from the cover of Born in the U.S.A., posters and handbills from all phases of his career, and even the 1960Chevrolet Corvette he purchased after the success of Born to Run. It’s one of the most comprehensive exhibits the Rock Hall hasever featured on a single artist. In June, Springsteen FanFest drew visitors from near and far to experience three days of publicprograms, a free concert and rare and never-before-seen film footage from Springsteen’s personal collection by Grammy andAward-winning filmmaker, Thom Zimny.Motown MemoriesJanuary 1, 2009, marked not only the beginning of a new year but also the celebration of the golden anniversary of Motown’scontributions to the world. MOTOWN: The Sound of Young America Turns 50 features instruments, clothing, programs, posters,sheet music, original music scores, recordings and other items representing an array of Motown’s biggest stars. During thesummer, a weekend-long celebration of Motown’s anniversary featured special public programming, concerts and film.Woodstock Revisited“Three days of peace and music” in August 1969 would come to forever define a generation and influence one of the mostsignificant eras in rock and roll. Four decades later, the Rock Hall is commemorating that monumental event with a weekendcelebration and a special exhibit, Woodstock: The 40 th Anniversary, which will run through November 29, 2009. The exhibit tellsthe story of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair utilizing a vast array of artifacts from Woodstock executive producer MichaelLang and many of the artists who appeared at the festival.
