<strong>Role</strong>: <strong>Head</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engineering</strong><strong>Salary</strong>: £56,514 – £69,848<strong>Role</strong> DescriptionThe post holder will be required to lead, direct, control, develop and deploy<strong>Engineering</strong> Services including support to operating plants across LLW<strong>Repository</strong> <strong>Ltd</strong> (LLWR) in a manner that strives to achieve the level <strong>of</strong>performance required to meet customer needs subject to specified standardsin safety, security, safeguards, quality, project delivery, and environmentalperformance. The post holder is the primary Site leader for provision <strong>of</strong>engineering services.DutiesGeneral Responsibilities• For implementing LLWR standards and expectations in safetybehaviour and to monitor performance against these by delivering andsustaining improvements in safety through promoting, stimulating,encouraging, leading and auditing improvement processes.• For the health, safety and career development <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Engineering</strong>team.• For providing functional leadership to the <strong>Engineering</strong> organizationincluding line managing the engineering lead team.<strong>Engineering</strong> Capability Responsibilities• Maintain the health <strong>of</strong> the overall engineering capability, and report onhealth measures.• Facilitate the acquisition and allocation <strong>of</strong> the internal engineeringresources required to deliver the LTP, enabling resource mobility tomaximize their value.• Provide specialist discipline design delivery capability for topical areascritical to the success <strong>of</strong> the business.• Provide specialist Plant <strong>Engineering</strong> capabilities for topical areascritical to the successful management <strong>of</strong> LLWR assets including AssetManagement, Equipment Reliability and System <strong>Engineering</strong>.• Provide a Project <strong>Engineering</strong> Management capability that maintainsclose links with LLWR projects and programmes in order to ensure fitfor-purposeengineering strategies and timely engineering support thatfacilitates on time delivery <strong>of</strong> project milestones.• Establish key <strong>Engineering</strong> Supply Chain arrangements and links withparent companies and pr<strong>of</strong>essional bodies to develop a strategicnetwork <strong>of</strong> resources and ready access to subject matter experts andengineering delivery support.<strong>Engineering</strong> Standards and Assurance Responsibilities• Maintain arrangements that ensure the deployment <strong>of</strong> suitably qualified


and experienced engineering staff• Develop, implement and maintain LLWR <strong>Engineering</strong> standards andprocedures.• Provide ongoing assurance that LLWR <strong>Engineering</strong> procedures are fitfor purpose and are appropriately promulgated and complied withacross LLWR.• Provide the procedures, training and support arrangements required towork in accordance with the <strong>Engineering</strong> procedures.• Establish and maintain an assessment programme that incorporatesmanagement, self and independent review elements which monitor theperformance <strong>of</strong> engineering work.• Establish, maintain and report on key performance indicators that areindicative <strong>of</strong> the health <strong>of</strong> the engineering function and reflect keybusiness objectives.• Share engineering learning and best practice across the function andoperations.Principal AccountabilitiesTo the <strong>Head</strong> <strong>of</strong> Science and <strong>Engineering</strong> for:• Delivering the engineering mission including delivery <strong>of</strong> the LifetimePlan through safe, sustainable performance and open and transparentpartnering with all its stakeholders.• Delivery <strong>of</strong> sustained improvements in all <strong>of</strong> the accountability areas bypromoting, stimulating, encouraging and leading change andimprovement processes.• Assurance that Design Authority and Intelligent Customerresponsibilities for discipline and plant engineering are being effectivelydischarged across LLWR.• Ensuring that appropriate arrangements for identification <strong>of</strong> engineeringrisks and development <strong>of</strong> mitigation plans are in place.• Overall control <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engineering</strong> Function financial forecasting andbudget control.• Leadership, mentoring, development and performance management <strong>of</strong>the <strong>Engineering</strong> Team.To the <strong>Head</strong> <strong>of</strong> Site for:• Delivering technically sound and cost effective engineering solutions,and ensuring the quality <strong>of</strong> the products and deliverables produced bythe engineering team support safe, reliable and predictableperformance.EHS&Q AccountabilitiesTo the <strong>Head</strong> <strong>of</strong> Science and <strong>Engineering</strong> for:• Delivering the overall targets set by the Managing Director, to meet therequirements <strong>of</strong> the company’s EHS&Q, security and safeguardsregulatory framework in accordance with statutory and Site Licence


equirements.• Ensuring the delivery <strong>of</strong> EHS&Q, security and safeguards performancein accordance with the requirements <strong>of</strong> the Sellafield Managementsystem within engineering’s area <strong>of</strong> responsibility.• Implementing LLWR standards and expectations in safety behaviourand monitor performance against these by delivering and sustainingimprovements in safety through promoting, stimulating, encouraging,leading and auditing improvement processes.Business AccountabilitiesTo the <strong>Head</strong> <strong>of</strong> Science and <strong>Engineering</strong> for:• The status, health and performance <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Engineering</strong> Function.• The delivery <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Engineering</strong> Function LTP.<strong>Engineering</strong> Capability AccountabilitiesTo the <strong>Head</strong> <strong>of</strong> Science and <strong>Engineering</strong> for:• Developing, maintaining and sustaining the <strong>Engineering</strong> capabilitiesneeded to deliver the LTP, including arrangements for appropriateengagement <strong>of</strong> the supply chain.• Optimizing resource deployment.• Selection, Suitably Qualified and Experienced Ping and appointment <strong>of</strong><strong>Engineering</strong> Team.<strong>Engineering</strong> Standards and Assurance AccountabilitiesTo the <strong>Head</strong> <strong>of</strong> Science and <strong>Engineering</strong> for:• Ensuring that engineering staff deployed to the business are suitablyqualified and experienced and capable <strong>of</strong> fulfilling their assigned roles.• Ensuring that engineering standards for the purpose <strong>of</strong> improving thedelivery <strong>of</strong> the LTP are developed, maintained and consistentlyapplied.• Ensuring that an engineering assurance programme is established andmaintained that provides an appropriate level <strong>of</strong> confidence thatengineering work is performed in accordance with requirements.• Ensuring that arrangements for facilitation <strong>of</strong> appropriate timelyengineering reviews are in place.Essential Skills• Degree qualified in an engineering discipline• Registered with the <strong>Engineering</strong> Council (i.e. Chartered Engineer)• Member <strong>of</strong> a Pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>Engineering</strong> Institution• At least 5 years <strong>of</strong> relevant experience leading multi-disciplineengineering teams in a management capacity• At least 3 years working in the nuclear industry• In depth understanding <strong>of</strong> Design <strong>Engineering</strong> concepts including the


Design Authority and Intelligent Customer roles• Working understanding <strong>of</strong> Plant <strong>Engineering</strong> concepts including AssetManagement, Equipment Reliability and System <strong>Engineering</strong> aspracticed in the nuclear industry.• Working understanding <strong>of</strong> industry consensus standards including WorldAssociation <strong>of</strong> Nuclear Operators (WANO)• Working understanding <strong>of</strong> assessment and corrective actionmanagement programmes• Working understanding <strong>of</strong> engineering function performancemeasurement concepts and tools.• Excellent verbal and written communication skills• Ability to lead by example, commit to high standards, and to hold selfand others to account.Desirable Skills• Previous experience working on a licensed nuclear site.• Certified as APMP by the Association for Project Management.• Knowledge <strong>of</strong> the UK engineering supply chain, in particular nuclearindustry service providers based in the Northwest <strong>of</strong> England.• Previous experience in hazardous waste transportation, storage anddisposal.• Previous experience in operations and maintenance <strong>of</strong> hazardousfacilities.Background InformationLLW <strong>Repository</strong> <strong>Ltd</strong> is a waste management company that provides servicesto Customers to treat and dispose <strong>of</strong> low level radioactive waste.
