Avail Move ManagementOpen the Pipeline!New plan supports growth in military moves.e can easily double our volume of military moves,”“Wsays Avail Senior Director of Military ServicesBob Ewing. “We’ll do it as a world-class SCAC manager—putting our military service in sync with our reputation forcorporate moves.”In July, Avail Vice President Phil Wahl introduced anambitious plan. It will grow military business throughoutthe year by optimizing the performance of Atlas-managedSCACs—carriers that provide service to the military.“At the end of the day, it’s our service in theresidences that drives satisfaction ratings.”- Bob Ewing, Senior Director of Military ServicesBob and a dedicated military team—Military SpecialistsMike Smith and Lisa Weiss, plus Director of Military ServicesLaurie Fellwock—are now working the plan. The concertedeffort will ensure Atlas of military business year round.Satisfaction Ratings Drive Business.“At the end of the day, it’s our service in the residences thatdrives satisfaction ratings,” says Bob. “That, in combinationwith rates, determines the volume of military moves thatcome our way.”“We monitor the performance of every SCAC we manage,”says Phil. “We make it a priority to help them meet expectationsand grow their business.”If an agent underperforms, Mike and Lisa consult directlywith them to help them measure up and make serviceimprovements. Other than objective measures, there are noguarantees of business, “We’ll do whatever it takes to competeand win,” says Phil. “Even if it means brokering services outsideour corporate network.”“The military is a very important customer,” says Bob. “Thisentire effort represents a renewed commitment to them withinvestments to improve the experience of military families—and create more opportunities for Atlas and our agents.”Q. What is SCAC?A. The Standard Carrier Alpha Code is a carrier’s uniqueidentity for doing business with U.S. governmentagencies. This includes participation in the DefensePersonal Property Program (DP3) for relocating militaryfamilies.Q. How is Atlas involved with SCAC?A. Atlas Van Lines files rates for and manages fourSCACs; it also manages 26 SCACs for Atlas agents whomove military families.Q. Why is SCAC management important?A. SCACs are individually evaluated based on surveyssubmitted by military customers. These ratings, combined with the carrier’s rates, provide the basisfor ranking carriers. Carriers with higher rankings getpreference for moves; those in the top tier can receivemilitary business year round.Avail SCAC-management processes support thecustomer’s participation in the military’s surveyof satisfaction. An incentive rewards CSRs for theparticipation of their customers; a third-party firmfollows up as well to encourage customer participation.“Top-ranked carriers consistently see a percentageof survey returns in the high thirties,” says Bob.“We’re getting there.”16 Atlas Amplifier • Winter 2012 Atlas Amplifier • Winter 2012 17

A better idea would be to use acentralized approach (in this case, a contractor) to ensureservices are performed on time, within budget, and to yourexpectations. Such is the case for centralized service deliveryon international moves.International moves can be complicated, with manymoving pieces. From global freight forwarding to languageand acculturation training...from visa and immigration issuesto home sale, home finding and expense management...amosaic of intertwining services calls for careful management.Working in multiple time zones across different continentsmakes the process even more challenging. Trying to deliverservices in a decentralized fashion from multiple regionsoften results in inconsistent service delivery. And it can be anightmare for the client who must manage a disparate groupof regional contacts, each working in a separate silo with theirown processes and procedures.A centralized service delivery that includes a robusttechnology infrastructure for international moves offersmany benefits not seen with decentralization, including:• Simplified accountability: client questions can beanswered with a phone call or email to a single pointof-contactwho is knowledgeable about all aspects ofthe relocation program.• Superior service: consistent, efficient service deliverymeets or exceeds the client’s needs.• Better collaboration: a unified service team encouragesteamwork and engages employees.• Flexible staffing: shifts in workload, including scaling-upfor strategic initiatives, are easily accommodated.• Access to subject matter experts: expertise is readilyavailable from a concentrated knowledge base and acentral repository of client-related items.• Shared learning: knowledge shared among staffmembers results in process improvements.• Executive management support: if an issue escalates,an executive is available to address the situation.• Uniform metrics: common standards and methodologiesallow for proper measurement and evaluation of results.• Cost savings: eliminating redundancies and sharingresources results in cost savings which can be passedon to the client.DestinationServicesResponsiveness to client needs, no matter when or wherein the world a need may arise, is key to the success of acentralized approach. Through the use of flexible schedules, smart phones and 24/7 access to web-based applications, centralized service teams can maintain a high degree ofresponsiveness to clients and with service providers aroundthe globe.HouseholdGoodsKeeping service delivery for international moves “underone roof” translates into cost savings and efficiencies for theservice provider, as well as positive results for clients. Theseinclude cost reduction, improved employee morale andperformance, increased service quality, and long-term clientsatisfaction.26 Atlas Amplifier • Winter 2012 Atlas Amplifier • Winter 2012 27

Trackssincerity) that prompted us to opt for Atlas Van Lines. On the scheduled date for packing, Scott Marconi, Driver/Supervisor, arrived on time with three colleagues. They werevery courteous and friendly; and they did an exceptional jobin packing and loading our household goods, makingaccommodations as requested or as necessary. The handlingof our household goods in Newport News was even moreimpressive. A member of Mr. Marconi’s crew had becomeill, and the delivery, unloading and placement of ourbelongings had to be accomplished by Mr. Marconi and oneother person. Although having to work into the hours ofdarkness, Mr. Marconi and his colleague did not becomefrustrated but retained their sense of humor; and theycontinued to work diligently, efficiently, and expertly with fewbreaks. I have never seen two people do such a remarkablejob under such demanding conditions. Mr. Marconi and hiscolleagues are professional, competent, hard-working,no-nonsense relocation employees. The wit and keen senseof humor they continually displayed are valuable assets. Bothmen are superior representatives of Ace Relocation Systemsand Atlas Van Lines. Our move couldnot have gone better – it was seamless and professionalfrom day one. Customer feedback is important and we wantyour company to know about the professionals within yourorganization we came to know.First there is Mel Smith. Mel kicked off the process bycoming to our condo in Bethesda and pricing the job. You arelucky to have someone like Mel presenting the face of yourcompany as a first impression. Integrity and professional arethe terms that come to mind with that first impression. Welater learned that Mel’s estimate was within 100 lbs. for a sixton move. Please pass on to Mel our sincere thanks and100 percent customer satisfaction. The complete customer satisfaction rating continues withTerry Poorbaugh who handled the scheduling and paperworkpart of the move through the actual movers – Chuck Racineand his two helpers. They were always on time and overdelivered on our expectations and timeline. This team workedflawlessly to meet our deadlines. We will most likely have to move again in the next twoyears, and you will have a repeat customer with us. It goeswithout saying that we will continue to speak the praises ofPaxton whenever we get the opportunity to do so. She has stated overand over during the past few weeks that she couldnot believe how nice and easy the move had gone and howyou had personally gone out of your way to ensure it allwent smoothly.Your packers, your driver (Larry Wilson) and yourloaders/unloaders were extremely polite, courteous, considerate and in general, just very nice and extremelyprofessional.Thank you very much for your personal attention to hermove. Your level of professionalism and caring for hersituation throughout the move was just unbelievable. Weso appreciate you being willing to work with her on logistics, timing, pricing, flexibility on which pieces of furniture andhousehold goods were moved.Overall, I just cannot believe how smoothly the move wentand I do believe that it was directly related to how you andChristine handled it all. BillingtonChief Accounting OfficerNEWAsurionRE: Mike McCarthy, William GiffenGolden Van Lines Inc. (991)Longmont, COMike, as you may remember, in mid-April, my husband, Brad, and I were relocated with Tri-State, through your company, from Gillette, WY to Westminster, CO.I wanted to take a moment to commend your staff on thequality of their work throughout the move. Bill and his crewwere extremely conscientious in their work and continuallychecked with me to see if I was satisfied with the progressionof the move. Having never been moved professionally before,I was a bit apprehensive about the whole process and morethan a little bit concerned about the safety of some of ouritems. Bill assured me they would do their very best to seethat all items arrived safely in Colorado. While we still havenot unpacked everything, we have yet to find anybreakage, so we are optimistic that will be the case withall of our belongings. I can see, as professional movers, these gentlemen have unique sets of skills and they needto be congratulated on a “job well done.”Furthermore, I would like to mention Ken and Jeremy fromSMS. These gentlemen worked diligently to see to itthat all of the taxidermy, artwork, pool table, etc., all made itsafely to our new home. Their job was no small task, either, since they had to create several crates for the animals andartwork, tear down and put together a pool table, etc. They definitely went “above and beyond” to see to it thateverything was packed safely and securely. In addition, theywere extremely pleasant when asked to help out whereverand whenever they were needed. It was indeed a pleasure towork with them.Lastly, I would like to express my sincere appreciation forthe coordinated effort from both crews for executing a safeand successful move for the safe. My utmost concern was fortheir safety and I could see, after they began to relocate it, thatthese crews were definitely the “ones for the job!”Thank you for providing quality and caring professionalsfor our move, who managed to make a large undertaking, notonly successful, but as pleasant as possible. Since both youand Mr. Rey (SMS) made the effort to come to our home onmoving day, it is evident to me that you both take an activeinterest in not only the job to be done, but in those who areon the “front lines.” Thank you again.SincerelyJanet G. (J.J.) HansonRE: Daniel Snyder, Jr.DMS Moving Systems, Inc. (800)Canton, MII wanted to tell you about an amazing experience I had usingyour company to move us from California to Indiana.I have heard the horror stories about things going wrong, showing up late and broken stuff when people move longdistances. We did NOT have these issues but actually had avery smooth and inspiring move provided by your companyand Dan Snyder, our driver. The communication was flawless from Dan’s first calland text to me. Our whole family was on vacation when themove started and this communication put us at ease whilenot being at home to oversee the move. We came homeand found that they had picked up everything we had askedand left what we had asked them to leave. The place wasin good order and with a little clean up, we were ready tosell the house. The professionalism on how we were treated both byyour staff and also Dan and his crew (James and John), wasimpressive. As a matter of fact I will try to replicate this workquality myself. I was treated with respect and with integrity. The unpacking in Indiana was above par also. They hadthings in the right rooms fast and without incidence. Weanticipated that we would have to stay in a hotel for over aweek, but because of Dan’s organization, we only had to staythere for 3 nights and were able to move into our home. Aswe unpack I find that there is nothing missing and nothingbroken. My wife and the whole family are impressed.I am not a person who usually takes the time to give goodfeedback, but I think that Dan Snyder’s behavior deserves it.I hope you have many people like Dan. From the first callI made to you and initial contact with the sales person to thefinal drop off and pick up of the storage vaults, my experiencewas just as you described to me and went very smoothly. When I was researching and planning our move, I had adifficult time deciding what company to use. I found no credibleinformation out there that I put my faith in regardingyour company and service. So, once I made the decision togo with your company, I worried a lot about all that could gowrong. How incredibly pleased and surprised I am today thatthe entire process was just as you described to me, and noneof my items arrived broken, (I did my own packing, however)which means that you handled my four vaults carefullyduring shipment.Your flexibility of sending out more vaults than I initiallyrequested but only being charged for what I used was whathooked me on using your service. And even though I didnot completely believe it at the time, you really did onlycharge me for using the four vaults even though youdelivered five. Awesome! The only negative was that you guys put your own lockson the vaults after I had my own locks on them. We had toscramble to find a tool to cut the locks off so we could get thevaults open. Considering all that could have gone wrong andall that I worried about, it was a fairly insignificant issue.I could add more positive feedback regarding you andyour driver’s willingness and attempts to work with us onour schedule. I would be interested in providing a customertestimonial if you are interested. That’s how pleased andimpressed I am with you and your company. Thank you!Kind Regards,Rodney Tobianski48 Atlas Amplifier • Winter 2012Atlas Amplifier • Winter 2012 49
