Roosevelt Blvd.Reservations (305) 296-8100“Never, Ever, Give Up!” A PaeanTo The Persistence of Diana NyadShe did it! She did, at 64years old, what she could notdo at 28 years old back in 1978.She completed her glorious110 mile swim from Havana,Cuba to Key West, Florida,U.S.A. in 54 hours. It was herfifth and “final” attempt but Iam not sure anybody believedthat. Diana Nyad’s swim isa message that resonates onmany different levels and wassuccinctly captured in hercelebratory statement, standingon the shores of Key West, “I’vegot three messages. One is weshould never, ever give up. Twois you are never too old to chaseyour dreams. Three is, it lookslike a solitary sport, but it’s ateam.” It pretty much sums upwhat life requires in order to besuccessful as that is defined byeach of us.“Never, ever give up.” Manyintended accomplishmentsnever see the light of daybecause people give up. It iseither too hard or takes too longor obstacles are not overcome. What we celebrate is whenthe human spirit carries oneforward to accomplishment.Calvin Coolidge said it wellwhen he said, “Nothing in theworld can take the place ofpersistence. Talent will not;nothing is more common thanunsuccessful men with talent (orwomen – author’s note). Geniuswill not; unrewarded genius isalmost a proverb. Educationwill not; the world is full ofeducated derelicts. Persistenceand determination alone areomnipotent. The slogan “presson” has solved and always willsolve the problems of the humanrace.”“You are never too old tochase your dreams”. The excuseof age more and more becomesthe easiest way out as life goeson, but it is a self-determinedlimitation. Satchel Paige oncesaid, “Age is a question of mindover matter. If you don’t mind,it doesn’t matter”. I can tell you, being one year older than Ms.Nyad, it made me think, as weall should, of the things I havebeen reluctant to continue withor try to do in the first place.“It may look solitary, butit’s a team”. Whether it isparents, teachers, colleagues orfriends, none of us do much ofanything worthwhile withoutothers. As Hillel said over twothousand years ago, “If I amnot for myself, who will be? IfI am only for myself, what amI? If not now, when?” DianaNyad’s accomplishment shouldbe celebrated as a triumph ofwill and the human spirit andrecognized for the great lessonsit teaches us all.Paean is a song of praiseor triumph and Ms. Nyad iscertainly worthy of both, alongwith the olive wreath of honordue a great athlete.Chris Bellandconch color the florida keys 4 photographic chronicle
