It’s time togive a voice to those who have great comments to say about the Keys.ediTORIALLocal PhilanthropistMakes a Huge DifferenceFor ten years now, retired localdeveloper David Wolkowsky has beenquietly doing his part to stimulate localeducation by personally giving cashrewards to the local teachers who exceland prove themselves to be a cut abovethe rest. This year David personallypresented the top ten teachers at KeyWest High School, chosen by theirpeers, with checks for $5,000 each.He presented band director GaryHernandez, who was chosen the bestof the best, with a check for $25,000.Now if you do the math, that meansthat this year alone, David Wolkowskydonated $70,000 to our best teachersin order to inspire all teachers to tryharder, the ultimate result of whichwill be that our students get a bettereducation. A simple but brilliant actof kindness!David has led a rather lowkey resident life and does not liketo blow his own horn, even if hehas accomplished a lot in Key Westduring his lifetime. He is now 92.Many of you don’t know that Davidwas actually born in Key West. Hisgrandfather, Abraham Wolkowsky, moved to Key West in the late 1880’sand opened a fine clothing store onDuval Street. After attending theUniversity of Pennsylvania, he restoredbuildings in Philadelphia for a while, but returned to Key West in 1962after the death of his father, IsaacWolkowsky. The family had a fewproperties in Old Town and Daviddecided to retire to Key West at the ageof 40.It did not take long for Davidto get bored and he started buyingup property all over Old Town. Hisbiggest coup was buying the oldCuban Ferry Dock, choice waterfrontproperty near Mallory Square for$106,000 in 1963. He transformed thePorter Steamship Offices into Tony’sFish Mart after having it moved it tothe waterfront to sit on pilings. Thenin 1967 he built a motel around theeatery with 50 unique rooms that facedTOM OOSTERHOUDTeditor&publisherthe ocean. David named his resort“The Pier House”.Jimmy Buffet and BobMarley started their careers in thatmotel’s funky Chart Room bar.Buffet credited Wolkowsky as beingthe very first to hire him. The lateauthor Truman Capote was one of theearliest celebrities to spend winters atthe Pier House.Wolkowsy went on to buythe huge Kresge five-and-dime storebuilding that has housed Fast BuckFreddie’s, as well as Magaritaville, for many years. He put his exclusivepenthouse on the top of the building, where it still stands. He also boughtBallast Key, about 8 miles off ofKey West, and built a large houseand guest house on the island. Heentertained guests like TennesseeWilliams and Truman Capote outthere. Wolkowsky became famousfor serving hot dogs at his parties tofamous guests like Prime MinisterEdward Heath, various Rockefellers, and Vanderbilts. As the years wentby, David went on to restore dozensof homes around Key West, and builthis Sands nightclub where The ReachHotel now stands. In the year 2000, Davidcreated his Teacher Merit AwardsFund. Ten years later you will finda photo spread in this issue of ConchColor of David himself, at 92, passingout the checks at Key West HighSchool to the most hard workingand deserving teachers. By the way,David loves the positive mission ofConch Color and how it also rewardsteachers and students who excel. Welove it when he visits our offices. Heinspires us as much as we seem toinspire him.On behalf of Key West andall the local teachers that DavidWokowsky has rewarded andinspired, we thank him on being socivic-minded at 92. David certainlysets an example as a model citizen.Conch Color is proud to feature himin this week’s issue.conch color the florida keys 4 photographic chronicle

Bob Esty Remembers His LastDance With Donna SummerDonna Summer passed away at age 63from lung cancer (she did not smoke) at hercondo in Naples, Florida, with her husbandBruce Soldano. Her unforgettable songsbecame the sound track for the disco era.Editor’s note: Bob Esty has beencoming to Key West for many yearsto direct musicals and do musicalarrangements for local entertainers, and has made many good friendshere. Over the years Bob has donemusical arrangements for many ofthe music businesses biggest names, from Michael Jackson to BarbaraStreisand. When I found out thatDonna Summer had passed awayfrom cancer, I called Bob and askedhim if he would write somethingabout his memories with the ultimatedisco diva of the 70’s. Their “LastDance” remains one of the mostmemorable songs of the disco era. Wethank Bob for sharing his thoughtswith us.When I heard Donna Summerhad died...I cried. I can’t describethe images in my mind and thesounds I heard. I remember soclearly playing the piano on thedemo I did with Donna singing“Last Dance,” and her saying at theend of her long high note, “That’sAll Folks!” She was so funny anddown to earth in life that I justcouldn’t believe she had passedaway. No one knew she was sick. There was no indication. Nothing toprepare me for this. My professionalassociation with Donna Summerbegan in 1977, when I arrangedand conducted “Last Dance” andher first double LP, “Once Upon ATime.” Donna always sang the songsI wrote with Paul Jabara. We askedher to record the demos in hopesshe would record them.In 1990, I recorded a demo ofa two-song medley called “We’reGonna Win/One World” at herranch in Chatsworth, California. It’sso moving and stirring, at a timewhen Europe was opening up, andthe AIDS crisis was overwhelming.I’ll post a link so you can hear theunreleased song. I played all the instrumentsand we used friends thatsang as a choir. Paul Jabara and JayAsher co-wrote the first song and Ico-wrote “One World” with Paul. The first time I met DonnaSummer, she knocked on PaulJabara’s door and walked in laughingand telling us about having tomeet her friend to go shopping, and that she was already late. Itwas 1977. Paul knew her becauseDonna was in the German companyof “HAIR” and Paul was inthe original Broadway production.Donna sat down as I was playinga song that Paul and I wrote called“Shut Out.” We planned it as amedley with “Heaven Is A Disco.”The lyrics of “Shut Out” were abouta guy wanting to get into the “hottestclub in town.” When he couldn’tget in, he goes home and fantasizes,“To get off my Bummer, I playedDonna Summer, alone in my room,we’ll dance!!!” That was when wehad hoped Donna would sing onthe track. She loved the idea, andwe worked out what Donna wouldsing the rest of the day. Even thoughshe didn’t meet her friend, I can stillremember what a thrilling voice shehad, and what a fun time we hadexperimenting. The medley endedwith “Heaven Is A Disco.” I knowDonna Summer is in that heaven, singing and dancing with the latePaul Jabara, both of them friends tothe end. - Bob Estyhttp://soundcloud.com/bobesty/we-are-gonna-win-one-worldconch color the florida keys 26 photographic chronicle

This is not always the case and if you arein this position you will need to take a deepbreath and find something really interestingand physical to do especially if your frustrationinvolves one of your creations take a walkbefore you say something you will regret inhindsight.Taurus: The same type of technique you usein the outer world does not always work inintimate relationships funny how you have toleave all that authority and brilliance at thedoor huh? Take a moment to think about howyour aggressive actions affect the ones you loveand try to be more sensitive to how they feelalways remember to play together.Gemini: Stick with what you know first andforemost the opportunities for advancementif you act in the right way are formidable theother side of the coin can cause you to losewhatever ground you have gained. What isit exactly that you are afraid of? It is time toshow the world what you’ve got or bow outgracefully if you cannot deliver what you havepromised.Cancer: There is nothing in this world thathappens completely independentof some sort of action on our part to eitherinvite it or cause it to happen to us. Consideryour actions and why you have made themin the areas of communications and followthrough with partners, legalities, and property. What details did you forget to get closure on?Can you get it now?Leo: The tendency is to ‘crow” to the groupover some thing you have won the battle over,do not do this or wave a red cape in the bullsface either, you are not out of the woods withthis one yet, and you need to be very carefulas you can still lose the war by compromisingyour strategies too loosely or being tooarrogant remember loose lips sink ships.Virgo: Could you just relax for a minute andenjoy at least the sweet smell of your dreamscoming true? Stop worrying long enough to lapup some of that ambrosia so lavishly displayedin the physical just in front of you. In factlighten up and laugh it up for once act out afantasy and who knows it just might becomeyour truth. I saw that! Stop pinching yourselfin the mirror.Libra: Make a list of your priorities. Be gratefulfor what you have. Get rid of things that donot matter. Love the one you are with, without sensor or expectations, stop listening tohow it should be and look at how it is and behappy with it. Share what you have. Call ‘emlike you see them and in this way eliminate liesand deception unless you are afraid to hear thetruth.Scorpio: When it comes to other peoplesmoney, investments, banking institutions, insurance companies, mortgage companies, anything to do with jointly held resources, you must be super aware especially whenit has to do with property, someone orsomething is not as it seems and maynot have your best interests at heart. Payattention to your gut instinct on this.Sagittarius: It is one thing to throw horseshoes or hand grenades and still expecta positive outcome but when you feelsomething is not quite right in yourpersonal partnerships of any kind and youhesitate or gamble anyway you have onlyyourself to blame when you find yourselfcaught up in a three way drama that thereseems to be no way out of and no real trutheither.Capricorn: Time to come clean, tellsomebody you love them, pop the question, follow your dream, get yourself free, workat something you love creatively? Why notall of that and then some? You have it inyou. I know you do. Communicating howyou feel and what you want can clear the airand be very productive also catalytic for allconcerned.Aquarius: The time may have come whereyou can no longer pretend that you don’tneed some sort of help to get you set in theright direction.
