July 19 - July 25, 2013 • www.conchcolor.comThis Is The EndFeaturing The Backstreet BoysWhen the end of the worldcomes a-knocking - and five ofthe remaining Hollywood actingelite (Franco, Rogen, Baruchel,Jonah Hill, and The Office’sCraig Robinson) decide to roughit out in Franco’s home. This IsThe End finishes up on a musicalnote with a surprise appearanceby the Backstreet Boys which isas random as everything whichhas gone before on this journeyof self-awareness, redemptionwith lashings of selfishness - butto be honest, you couldn’t have itany other way in this piece whichurges you to check your brain atthe door. A riotous night out foran admittedly guilty pleasure - butit’s the first comedy in a while tomake the end of the world seemlike a great place to be.Frank DeFord BuysHome in Key WestForgive us forpointing first tosomeone with anNPR connection, butwe figure his fanswill want to knowthat Morning Editioncommentator FrankDeford is amongthose being honoredWednesday afternoonat the WhiteHouse. He and 12 other peopleare being givenNational HumanitiesMedals. Conch Color greatly appreciates positive comments about the community you live in. Ifyou love your community and have something positive to say about it, email ooster@bellsouth.net.There are so many great Samaritans in the Keys and wonderful things happen every day. It’s time togive a voice to those who have great comments to say about the Keys.Conch Color Means Business! When I was on the CityCommission ten years ago, theCity Finance Director constantlyreminded me of how much moneyit takes to run this little city eachyear. In addition to fixing thestreets and pot holes that everyoneguesses, we had 95 policeman,68 fireman, and over 500 cityemployees, and they all had tobe paid. The city owned a lot ofproperty that had to be kept up aswell. Our constant goal was alwaysto do as much as we could withoutraising taxes. My colleague HarryBethel taught me the importanceof squeezing every penny. AndI did try to help him balance thebudget each year. And there wasalso the matter of keeping rentsand leases market rate. This is why the city has alwaystried to support and boost tourismwhen and where it could. Thecruise ships, the Conch Trainsand Trolleys, has always beenan integral part of this supportsystem. As of the attractions ofKey West. A few million here and afew million there tend to add up.During my six years on thecommission, I was always amazedthat local publications like theKey West Citizen and Key Westthe Newspaper never seemedto understand that focusing onbad news was bad for the localeconomy. Other resort citiesseem to understand this. As acommissioner, my head wouldoften spin from bad headlines.I probably lost my third termelection because I was too probusinessand pro-economy. It wasmaddening to think that logic andgood sense did not prevail. So when I left the citycommission, my immediate goalwas to start a publication thatfocused on good news and a goodlocal economy. Make our touristsand visitors realize why mostresidents call this paradise. Andtake every opportunity to showwhy living in the southernmost cityis nothing less than heavenly. For eight years Conch Color hasproudly shown the magic of livingin the Florida Keys. And most ofthe local advertising market haveagreed with us. Crunching thenumbers, it has probably cost theCitizen over ten million dollarsin lost advertising .But the Citizen has continuedto wreak havoc with its totallyunethical column called “Citizen’sVoice, which features lies calledin from unnamed sources. TheCitizen picks out the ones thatfit their negative agenda, oftenattacking those who disagree withtheir corrupt priorities. Recentlyone of our friends was viciouslyattacked in the Citizen’s Voice andhe tried to write an article thatresponded to their B.S., but theyrefused to print it. I found thissickening, to be sure.It is with great pride as aresult of all this nonsense, thatI welcome my longtime friend, and community advocate, ChrisBelland on board as of thisweek. His columns have alwaysbeen a feather in the cap of ourcommunity. Furthermore, I hopethat in the sake of good businessfor our community, that even morelocal business owners will showtheir support of Conch Color byadvertising. Itappears that only his half disciplined restraintis the only thing that keeps him frompouncing on everyone in sight. As “George”,Bowersox also plays the master of ceremoniesin this bruising sport of mastering thegame of his marriage. Connie Hurst portraysMartha, the chemical opposite duringtheir blistering interchanges , with icy eyesengulfed in a predatory leer, giving way toincendiary appearances of terror and grief, that finally engulfs her .The show ends inwholesale destruction leaving both the castand audience physically drained, as Georgemercilessly exposed the secrets that have alreadybegin to poison the young marriage ofSusannah Wells as “Honey” and Matt HollisHulsey, as “Nick. Mini-Season - A Perspective On AMixed Blessing Albeit Not For LobstersBy Chris BellandIf you are a lobster, you may wantto think about getting out of Dodge. In just a couple of days, the onslaughtof Mini-Season will be uponyou. If there was ever anything in theFlorida Keys upon which sides arequickly taken, it is probably Mini-Season. I get it. Mini-Season bringsin an army of visitors who otherwisemight not come here to get a firstcrack at our delicious, spiny creatures.Hotels, restaurants, airlines, car rental and attractions love it.On the other hand, commercialfishermen, environmentalists andresidents would pay for a shoot-onsightlicense for these same visitorsif they could get one from the state. They can’t and won’t. But comethey will.Visitors will soon come tothe Florida Keys and spend vastamounts of money for somethingthey could buy in a store for a fractionof the cost. I guess it’s the hunt.Actually, I am not sure exactly whatit is, other than it feels like you aregetting s x something for free whichyou are not. My father used to callthem “Chicago Hunters” denotingonce-in-a-while novice outdoorsmenwho do more damage than thebenefits they p s xrovide.I suppose most folks in the contracamp would not mind it so much ifit was done with a little more respectfor it all and I am not just talkingabout visitors but locals as well. Thevisitors come down not knowing thewaters with their brand new divinggear, some of which is purchasedthe day of at CVS. Many times theyrun across shallow turtle grass, hooktheir anchorson to coral andoften do notpay a whole lotof attentionas to how bigtheir catch is insize or quantity.I have alsoheard a fewstories aboutlocals whocircumventtheir bag limitby going outseveral times aday. Hmmm?!Again, good forthem, bad forthe lobsters. If I had toput it all inperspective, Iwould say itgoes back avery long timein this countrywhen Americansfelt a right to harvest whateverthey wanted from nature. There wasa lot of it. Buffalo were hunted bythe millions, many times just for thesport of it. Passenger pigeons, whichwere so plentiful that their flightwould blot out the sun, were huntedto extinction until today when somany other species sit on this precariouspoint of no return. When I was growing up in SouthFlorida, lobster was literally “poorman’s food”. They even served it inprisons. It was so plentiful that ourparents would send us out in flatbottomedskiffs with a gig which wasa three-pronged pole spear. Fromthe boat, you could gig the plentifullobsters in the shallows and literallyfill your boat in half an hour.“Fill your boat” was an all-too-oftenpractice, both for lobster and fish, hence the scarcity today. What has happened, at least inmy view, is boats. When I was growingup nobody had one. When Isay nobody, I mean literally nobodyowned a boat. The outboard enginewas just being developed. It wasquite an event when our neighboracross the street built a plywood“cabin cruiser” in his garage andequipped it with two 25 horse powerJohnsons. When my father got aboat of a similar nature, I thoughtwe were rich beyond all compare.Today, you have but to drive downany residential street to see that almosteveryone has a boat today andthat the consequences of this vastlyincreases the pressure on our naturalresources.Anyway, brace yourself. July 19 - July 25, 2013 • www.conchcolor.comRandy Roberts Soars in World Premiere of “Chance”In San FranciscoNew Musical Theater of San Franciscois presenting the world premiere ofa production entitled Chance: A MusicalPlay about Love, Risk & Getting It Right.Richard Isen (book, score) has createda truly refreshing and moving storyabout the journey of Gregory, (RichardHefner) a middle aged gay psychologistmoving from a reclusive, fearful existenceinto a life of more courageous, lifeaffirmingengagement. A gay psychologistand a handsome young rent boystumble down a unique path to healingwhen guided by a mysterious Hollywoodglamor queen (played by a gender illusionist).55 year old Gregory has spenthis adult life denying the loss he experiencedas a young man during the AIDScrisis. After a near-death experience, TheLady appears. Is she an inner guide fromthe Jungian collective unconscious? Ora musical hallucination resulting from asmall stroke? Gregory is pushed out ofhis solitary reality, by his unlikely muse, and down the rabbit hole of mid-lifecrisis where he enters into a turbulent, dangerous relationship with a youngmale escort named “Chance.” (This productioncontains strong language, adultsituations and partial nudity.Roberts, in a tour de force performance,as The Lady, is remarkable. Withhis glamorous turbans, regal gowns andimperious bearing, he is part NormaDesmond, part Margo Channing, andpart Auntie Mame with a touch ofScarlett O’Hara and The Spiderwomanthrown in. A highly acclaimed dragperformer and impressionist, he alsoproves to be a consummate actor withthe most powerful singing voice in theshow. Richard Hefner is utterly convincingas the cerebral, cautious, andconflicted psychologist Gregory. Heseems to embody an air of resignationuntil his meeting with the aptly named“Chance” throws him into an emotionalturmoil. As the title character, youngKen Lear is a wonder. Playing the roleof a hunky hustler, he seems to be rightout of central casting. He is boyishlyhandsome, remindful of a young JohnVoight in Midnight Cowboy. But unlikeVoight, whose character was completelyguileless, as Chance, Lear projects astreet savvy that helps him to survive ina hostile world. What’s more, in his seductionscenes with Hefner’s Gregory, hegives forth an aura of utter confidence inhis ability to please his clients and a rawanimal magnetism that is palpable. IfLear should ever need a second career tofall back on, this could be a particularlylucrative one, with a long waiting list ofprospective customers! All three actors are consummate singers, and are a joy to hear. Each has a bigmoment toward the end of the show inwhich he has to deliver songs filled withraw emotion, and Roberts, Hefner andLear more than live up to the challenge.
