Her unforgettable songsbecame the sound track for the disco era.Editor’s note: Bob Esty has beencoming to Key West for many yearsto direct musicals and do musicalarrangements for local entertainers, and has made many good friendshere. Over the years Bob has donemusical arrangements for many ofthe music businesses biggest names, from Michael Jackson to BarbaraStreisand. When I found out thatDonna Summer had passed awayfrom cancer, I called Bob and askedhim if he would write somethingabout his memories with the ultimatedisco diva of the 70’s. Their “LastDance” remains one of the mostmemorable songs of the disco era. Wethank Bob for sharing his thoughtswith us.When I heard Donna Summerhad died...I cried. I can’t describethe images in my mind and thesounds I heard. I remember soclearly playing the piano on thedemo I did with Donna singing“Last Dance,” and her saying at theend of her long high note, “That’sAll Folks!” She was so funny anddown to earth in life that I justcouldn’t believe she had passedaway. No one knew she was sick. There was no indication. Nothing toprepare me for this. My professionalassociation with Donna Summerbegan in 1977, when I arrangedand conducted “Last Dance” andher first double LP, “Once Upon ATime.” Donna always sang the songsI wrote with Paul Jabara. We askedher to record the demos in hopesshe would record them.In 1990, I recorded a demo ofa two-song medley called “We’reGonna Win/One World” at herranch in Chatsworth, California. It’sso moving and stirring, at a timewhen Europe was opening up, andthe AIDS crisis was overwhelming.I’ll post a link so you can hear theunreleased song. I played all the instrumentsand we used friends thatsang as a choir. Paul Jabara and JayAsher co-wrote the first song and Ico-wrote “One World” with Paul. The first time I met DonnaSummer, she knocked on PaulJabara’s door and walked in laughingand telling us about having tomeet her friend to go shopping, and that she was already late. Itwas 1977. Paul knew her becauseDonna was in the German companyof “HAIR” and Paul was inthe original Broadway production.Donna sat down as I was playinga song that Paul and I wrote called“Shut Out.” We planned it as amedley with “Heaven Is A Disco.”The lyrics of “Shut Out” were abouta guy wanting to get into the “hottestclub in town.” When he couldn’tget in, he goes home and fantasizes,“To get off my Bummer, I playedDonna Summer, alone in my room,we’ll dance!!!” That was when wehad hoped Donna would sing onthe track. She loved the idea, andwe worked out what Donna wouldsing the rest of the day. Even thoughshe didn’t meet her friend, I can stillremember what a thrilling voice shehad, and what a fun time we hadexperimenting. The medley endedwith “Heaven Is A Disco.” I knowDonna Summer is in that heaven, singing and dancing with the latePaul Jabara, both of them friends tothe end. - Bob Estyhttp://soundcloud.com/bobesty/we-are-gonna-win-one-worldconch color the florida keys 26 photographic chronicle
