GO COMMUNITY You Need To Know About The Urban Woods & Prairie Initiative Close to 1,000 acres along the Red River are now available for Fargo- Moorhead to enjoy. This enormous project, dubbed the Urban Woods and Prairie Initiative, was accomplished thanks to countless volunteers and organizations. We chatted with Audubon Dakota Executive Director Marshall Johnson, Fargo Parks Director of Parks Dave Leker, Fargo Parks Director of Recreation Clay Whittlesey and Moorhead City Planner Kristie Leshovsky. 1The Basics This project will have close to 25 sites and 1,000 acres. The goal is to establish native grass and habitation around the sites and create natural places where people can escape the city while still being in the cities. “It’s really aimed at lowering maintenance costs for the land owning entities, creating a real natural space along the 28-mile stretch of the river,” said Whittlesey. “It’s been a win-win.” 2This Is More Of A Na ture Conservancy Than An Actual Park For several years, Johnson and Audubon Dakota have been tirelessly working to ensure that these parks return to a natural state. Because of this, it is better to look at these new areas as a nature conservancy. “You’re actually going to want to go there to walk, hike, bird watch, cross-country ski,” said Whittlesey. These will be low maintenance areas so Fargo Parks won’t have to spend as many resources mowing or caring for the land. 3 4 You Can Thank The Flooding For This The beautiful new areas are available thanks to the awfulness that came from the floods. Many of the riverfront homes were bought out along the Red River. “What we’re doing as a team here is trying to put that positive spin on it and making it a resource for the community and repurposing the land so that it’s not just sitting idle, so that it’s managed and it’s available for the public to use,” said Johnson. “It’s a positive spin on, some cases, a less than ideal thing.” A Biker’s Paradise The hope is that this will become a 28-mile path along the river. Johnson advertises that you can enjoy Nichole’s Fine Pastry and go bird watching within a five-minute walk. While it may not all be paved, the goal is to create a trail that goes from Wall Street in North Fargo to 80th Avenue South. This is an incredibly complex challenge as they will have to go between private and public land, but it may be possible to do this by building bridges between Fargo and Moorhead. 5This Project Took A Tremendous Amount Of Funding Audubon Dakota received a grant for $83,000 from the Outdoor Heritage Fund. It wasn’t just government funding. Corporations like Xcel Energy, Starion Financial, Corwin Automotive and several other organizations have contributed to the development of The Urban Woods and Prairie Initiative. It took more than just funding, though. This took an incredible amount of effort from a large and diverse team. “That’s something that I think the community should know – the quality and skill level of the staff that they have working in the public entity,” Johnson said. “It’s absolutely incredible.”
