WHAT’S NEW AT BISHOP FOLEY CATHOLIC
Seven Varsity Athletes Take Their Skills
to the Next Level
This year, Bishop Foley Catholic High School had seven varsity
athletes who signed their National Letters of Intent to play a sport
in college. Nate Grys and Reggie Golfin both signed their letters in
the fall. Nate is a four year varsity baseball player here at BFC and
will be playing at Western Michigan University next year. Reggie is a
varsity lacrosse player who will be traveling to Tennessee to attend
and play lacrosse at Lincoln Memorial University. In the spring, Alexis
Ramirez, Katie Mathews, Cam Horwath, Antonio Capaldi, and Gary
Perry all signed their letters of intent. Alexis will be taking her
basketball talents to Albion College, while Katie, a varsity softball
player, will be going to the east coast to play at New England
College. Cam, a varsity baseball player, is going to be playing
baseball at John Carroll University. Antonio and Gary are both
varsity basketball players here at BFC and will both be attending
Macomb Community College in the fall and playing basketball
there. Congratulations Nate, Reggie, Alexis, Katie, Cam, Antonio,
and Gary! Bishop Foley Catholic is excited to see what you do in
your college careers!
BFC Band and Choir Take Off
Dr. Matt Daniels was hired as BFC’s new Music
Instructor last summer and has already brought
the BFC Music Department up to the next level!
Dr. Daniels revived the BFC Choir, in addition to
bringing more contemporary music to the all school
Masses every Tuesday with his Music Ministry team.
He also began a drum line in the fall that played
at a few football games and teaches a choir and
band class to students that are interested. Bishop
Foley Catholic’s choir and band got to share their
talents with the community during their Spring
Concert in April. In addition, several music students
have received honors. Two students were invited to
the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp this summer. Marisa
Jacques received a substantial scholarship to play clarinet in one of the ensembles and Emma Bongers will
in the Blue Lake choral ensembles, which will travel to Europe this summer to perform. BFC is so proud of Dr.
Daniels and his students and excited to see what they will do next school year.
BFC Baseball Makes History
Once Again
Bishop Foley Catholic’s Baseball Team once again
made history when they took home their fourth
consecutive Catholic League Championship on May
15. The team faced off against Riverview Gabriel
Richard at Comerica Park and while the game was
close, it was our Ventures that clinched the game
winning 4-2. New coach Justin Robinson also won the
Coach of the Year Award from the Catholic League.
Congratulations to the whole team, and especially
the senior players who won the Catholic League
Championship every year they were on the team!

A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT
As you read this article, another school year has come and gone for
Bishop Foley Catholic. It was a busy and full year with many triumphs and
blessings to be shared. We celebrated the growth of our fine arts program.
We cheered on our teams to victory and celebrated Championships with
them. We endured another Michigan winter but warmed ourselves with
faith and knowledge knowing that our parents and staff are dedicated
to the students and that our God loves. We bade farewell to our 46th
graduating class of seniors, and now we find ourselves reflecting on the
past year while anticipating the new year.
This time of year is always significant for BFC. It is a time to reflect upon
and evaluate our school year, a year that was full and packed with many
new adventures. It not only allows us to celebrate the many successes
and blessings, it affords us the time to make adjustments, redirect the
things that need our attention and to plan for another exciting year, as we
welcome new and returning students into our hallowed halls.
This coming school year will find us in a celebratory spirit as we embark on our 50th Anniversary Year.
In 1965, the dedicated and generous parishioners of Guardian Angels and St. Dennis saw their dream come to
a reality with the opening of Bishop Foley. For these past fifty years parishioners, parents, staff, benefactors
and friends have labored and loved to see our beloved high school reach this momentous occasion. Thus, we
have much to celebrate.
We will be marking this milestone in many ways; liturgically, dining, weekend getaway, special events, sharing…
all while celebrating a blessed past and anticipating our promised future. We will welcome Archbishop
Vigneron in the early part of the school year to celebrate the Eucharist with all of us as we give thanks to
God for His wonderful gifts. Many exciting events are being planned to connect with our alumni, renew
acquaintances and celebrate our many accomplishments. Some of these events include our Golden Gala
Banquet, our Annual Auction, and our BFC family reunion at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. For more
information on these events, please see page 11.
I hope that many of you will be able to join us for some or all of these events as we together celebrate this
milestone in our history. There will be opportunities to reconnect with classmates, share stories with old
friends, say thank you to those who have made BFC possible, reminisce about the days of yore and be part of
a year long celebration in honor of our beloved school.
I pray that you have an enjoyable summer filled with rest and relaxation, joined with family and friends and
that you will be ready to join us in celebrating 50 years of forming our Undeniably Catholic, Academically
Excellent school of success.

A LETTER FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
In the ten, or so, months between the time that I began working at
Bishop Foley Catholic and graduation, I have been thinking about
how I wanted to address the senior class as they sat together for the
very last time at graduation. It’s a time of celebration for them, along
with myself, and the rest of Bishop Foley Catholic. We are celebrating
another successful school year ending, as we get ready to send these
young adults into the world. I could have spent my few moments on a
recap of the year with all of the highs and lows, or I could actually try
to impart some wisdom during this momentous occasion. It was when
I came across a piece of advice that really resonated with me that I
decided on the latter.
The speaker of the piece urged everyone to “live their best story.” I
immediately, thought about the choose-your-own adventure books
that I used to read in elementary school. It occurred to me that these
young people are really just about to begin the second chapter of
their lives. They have their whole lives ahead of them, with lots of
paths along the way. While I couldn’t tell them what their story would
look like, I felt that I could give them some tools to success that I had
learned while picking my story, tools that I will also share with you now.
The first is to make your bed every day. By making your bed in the morning, you have actually started
your day having successfully completing one task. It may seem simple and unlikely to make much of an
impact. However, if you start to mark your accomplishments, no matter how big or small, you will see that
you have accomplished much more in a day than you give yourself credit for. That sense of empowerment
can start to find its way into other aspects of your life.
I encouraged the seniors, and I encourage you, to find
your passion. Find your passion and let that lead you to
fulfillment. It is imperative that you understand you will not
find your passion in possessions or money. The important
things are those that fill your heart. All millionaires aren’t
fulfilled and all fulfilled people aren’t millionaires. So if you
have to choose, choose your passion.
Believe in yourself. Don’t be afraid to fail. At some point in life,
you will fail. Don’t let the fear of failure make you too afraid to
try. Let the barriers you face be external, not internal. You will
never know what you’re capable of unless you try.
My final piece of advice is to give back and be generous.
Commit to helping those less fortunate than you. As each
day in your story moves forward do something to make
you a better person and do something for someone else.
Pledge to make a difference in the world.
Now as the Bishop Foley Catholic Class of 2015 moves on beyond the doors of BFC, joining the ranks of
several successful alumni that have gone on before them, I encourage you to join me in praying for them to
live their best story. Perhaps one day they will return to share the tools that they have learned along the way.

On Sunday, May 17, the school community said goodbye and good luck to the Bishop Foley Catholic High
School Class of 2015 during their Graduation Mass and Commencement Ceremony. The Class of 2015 may have
turned their tassels but they now join the esteemed rank of alumni of BFC! BFC is so proud to have so many
great young men and women leave campus and go on to bigger and better things. As we send our leaders

“My grandmother was called a ‘Rosie the
Riveter,’ but we don’t know what we will
be called to do. We will leave our mark
on the world and have titles that we
can tell our grandchildren about. We’ve
made stories here that we will share with
those we love, just as my grandmother
shared her stories with me. Saying
goodbye is hard, but we will always have
our memories from high school. We will
never look at plaid skirts and SchoolBell
khakis the same. We might not keep all
the friendships we made here in the past 4 years, but no one can
take the memories we have had away from us.
During our years at Foley, our school has accomplished 2 state
championships, put on 12 musical and play productions such
as The Boyfriend and The Crucible, kept our rivalry with Shrine
stronger than ever, had state and national qualifiers for debate,
achieved countless art awards, won Catholic League and district
titles, and won the spirit point competition as a class through
events such as VentureLympics and Spirit Week. As amazing as
these accomplishments are, there are so many others that each
of us has accomplished. Somehow we have been able to do all of
this while surviving quizzes, tests, and projects, and I think that is
something to be proud of.”

Juniors and Seniors
Receive Honors at
Awards Banquet
On Sunday, May 3, Foley hosted their annual Junior/
Senior Honors Banquet. Several students received
esteemed awards, from staying on the honor roll
all semesters while at BFC to having the highest
grades in classes. Here are some of the Highest
Student Honor Awards.
BFC Student Ambassador Award – This award is
given to a senior who has committed themselves as a
student ambassador throughout their time at Bishop
Foley Catholic. This student, with their enthusiasm and
energy, shares the “Foley Spirit” with all our visitors,
young and old. They are dedicated to the vision and
mission of BFC. This student upholds the BFC Honor
Code in his/her daily words and actions.
Antonio Capaldi
Stanley Scislowicz Award - This award was
established and donated by the Scislowicz family
in memory of their son Stan, who was killed in a
tragic hit and run accident. Stan graduated from
BFC in 1969. This award is given annually to the top
senior male and female athlete who has achieved
the highest GPA and has participated in at least two
varsity sports.
Katherine Bromm and Joseph Swenda
John F. Kennedy Award for Outstanding Service and
Leadership – This award is given to the senior who has
contributed the most outstanding service to the school
community over his/her four years at BFC.
John McQuillen
BFC Service Award – This award is given to a male and
female junior student who have supported, over three
years, Bishop Foley’s philosophy about service through
their community involvement and efforts in our school
community.
Abby Laurencelle and Aaron Augustyn
Louise Chadwick Award – This award was established
in memory of Louise Chadwick (who died of cancer),
wife of our second principal at BFC, Robert Chadwick.
This award is given annually to a senior male and
female who have at least a 3.3 GPA, participates in
two varsity sports and exemplifies good character and
leadership.
Carly Finegan and Cameron Horwath
Reverend Hector Saulino Award - Reverend Saulino
was the co-founding pastor of BFC from St Dennis,
often referred to as the “Father” of BFC. This
award goes to the senior who represents the best
in character and integrity and has always been a
perfect delight to be around.
Carly Finegan
William Boulus Award – This award is given in
memory of William Boulus, our first Athletic Director,
teacher and coach at BFC. This award is given
annually to a male and female senior who have
exhibited athletic excellence over his/her years at
BFC.
Mackenzie Horwath and Nathaniel Grys
Most Spirited Senior Award – This award is given
to the senior who has been elected by their fellow
classmates as the senior who demonstrates spirit,
pride, and involvement at Bishop Foley Catholic.

Foley Students Compete at
VentureLympics
Friday, March 27 may have seemed like a normal school day to many
schools, but to BFC students, it turned into a day full of competition
to see who would take home the most gold medals in the annual
VentureLympics. The day began with each class choosing their torch
bearers and those students proceeding into the gym to stand on
the podium. Then, the games began with an obstacle course that
spread throughout the entire school! From there, several different
events took place throughout the day, such as a cake decorating contest,
a dance off, a Draw Mr. Accavitti contest, trivia, tug-of-war, ultimate
Frisbee, and finally, sumo wrestling. Each student was able to find an
event that they could participate in and several students participated
in more than one event! The points that each class earned throughout
the day were added in to the spirit points each class had earned so far
throughout the entire school year. Seniors were ahead in spirit points
going into the day and they earned enough points to stay in
first place, giving them Prom day off. The class that was the
winner of VentureLympics, though, was the Junior class, as
they dominated in several events including the dance off and
arm wrestling!
Catholic Schools
Week 2015
Being able to attend a Catholic school is truly a gift for all
of our students and the BFC community celebrated this gift
together during Catholic Schools Week. The national theme for Catholic
Schools Week 2015 was once again “Catholic Schools: Communities
of Faith, Knowledge, and Service.” The week exemplified all three
categories and how our tight-knit school community is able to engage
in Faith, Knowledge, and Service. The students participated in many fun
activities throughout the week such as the “Celebration of Life” that
Student Council put on, the annual staff versus students dodge ball
game, and the annual talent show (which featured surprise guest Mr.
Valinski!) The week culminated with a Mass at Guardian Angels where
BFC and GA students got to celebrate together, followed by breakfast.
We hope that this exciting week was filled with the underlying message
that we would not be the “Undeniably Catholic, Academically Excellent”
community that we are without all the support we receive from parents,
students, and benefactors!

Foley’s First Ever Putt-A-Thon
This year, Bishop Foley Catholic did away with their
annual Walk-A-Thon and instead came up with the
idea to host a Putt-A-Thon. The BFC Field House and

Be the Difference
Every April, the Bishop Foley Catholic community comes together
to make a difference in the world around them. This April was
no different as our BFC students, teachers, staff, and parents
participated in the sixth annual Be the Difference Day. Our BFC
students learned that they must be the change they wish to see in
the world as they completed over 4000 combined hours of service
on April 24, 2015. Thank you to all the businesses that allowed us to
help make a difference!

A Night in Paris at the BFC Auction
This winter, Bishop Foley Catholic welcomed guests to the streets of Paris for their
Annual Auction and Gala. The evening was truly one to remember as the gym was
transformed into a romantic Paris setting, complete with the Eiffel Tower. It was a
record setting night as over 300 guests came through the door to bid on exciting
items in the silent and live auction, participate in raffle drawings, and enjoy delicious
food and drinks, provided by Club Venetian. We can’t say thank you enough to all
those who donated items to our Auction, but also to all the families and friends of
Foley that came out to the event. The proceeds from this event will help Bishop Foley Catholic continue to provide
a high quality education to all of our Ventures. Thank you to all who made our Annual Auction and Gala a success!

The 2015-2016 school year is a big one for Bishop
Foley Catholic High School, as it marks the 50 th Year
Anniversary of our school. Nearly 50 years ago, we
opened our doors with the intent to teach students in
a Catholic faith based environment that would allow
them to become leaders of the future. Although many
things have changed throughout the last 50 years,
one thing that has remained constant is the support
of our benefactors – parents, staff, faculty, friends, and
alumni – who always want to make BFC a better place.
Without every single one of you, BFC would not be the
school it is today and we certainly would not have been
around for 50 years, providing a quality Christ-centered
education to every student who walks through our
doors. BFC is blessed with dedicated faculty and staff,
engaged parents, and energetic students. BFC continues

Welcome New BFC Staff
The President of Bishop Foley Catholic, Fr. Gerry
LeBoeuf, is pleased to announce our new Athletic
Director and Admissions Director for the 2015-
2016 Academic Year. The Administration and Staff
welcome Mr. Brian Hassler in his new role as Athletic
Director and Ms. Katie Crombe ‘07 in her new role as
Admissions Director. Both of these new hires are no
strangers to BFC.
Mr. Hassler has been a faithful member of our staff for
the past 18 years acting in the role of Athletic Trainer.

His institutional knowledge will serve us well as he
continues to strengthen our athletic program built
on a solid foundation.
We also welcome Ms. Katie Crombe ‘07 as our
new Admissions Director. As a graduate of BFC,
Ms. Crombe is well versed with our school and has
already put her passion forward in carrying out her
new role. Her energy and love for BFC will certainly
shine through as she carries out her duties of
promoting BFC.

ALUMNI & COMMUNITY EVENTS
Recent BFC Reunions
What better way to celebrate Bishop Foley
Catholic’s 50 th Year Anniversary than by joining
with classmates to celebrate a reunion? BFC
Alumni joined together to celebrate one reunion
already this year and there are several more
reunions coming up!
The BFC Class of 1975 met up in May to celebrate
their 40 th year reunion. Several classmates came
in from out of town and made a weekend out
of it. The class arranged to have tours held at
Foley so alumni could see what the school looks like
now. Following the tours, the class celebrated together
at Club Venetian with dinner, drinks, and dancing.
It was wonderful to see how many Ventures have
kept in touch over the years and how many of them
reconnected during this reunion!
The BFC Classes of 1970, 1985, and 2005 are all having
reunions this year as well! The Class of 1970’s 45 th class
reunion will be held on September 5, 2015. Details are
to follow, so stay tuned to the BFC Alumni Facebook
page (Bishop Foley Alumni Connection) and to
www.bishopfoley.org/alumni.
Class of 1985 - mark your calendars for November 28,
2015 for your 30 th year reunion! The reunion will be
held at Shelby Gardens in Shelby Township. The cost
is $65 per person, payable to Cindy Belcastro by
July 15, and includes dinner, premium bar, late night
pizza, photo booth, and a DJ. Visit the school website

Ventures Come Back for
Alumni Games
Throughout the last school year, Bishop Foley Catholic has
welcomed back several Ventures for alumni games. During
Christmas break, both girls and boys basketball and the hockey
team all had alumni games. The football team also hosted their
annual Snow Bowl alumni game. This spring, girls softball and boys
lacrosse hosted their first ever alumni
games. It was fun to see so many alumni
come back and play on the court and field
that they competed on so many years
ago. Current BFC players also got to play
alongside the alumni and share stories of
how the teams and school have changed
over the years. Make sure to like BFC’s

alumni games and to see if your sport will
be hosting an alumni game soon!

year reunion on November 27, 2015. Details will be

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Caitie Goddard’s Big Adventure
Every year, Bishop Foley Catholic
High School picks one or two alumni
to receive the Distinguished Alumni
Award. This is no easy feat as BFC
has a plethora of successful and
notable alumni. However, this year,
one alum stood out from the rest.
Caitie Goddard, Class of 2002, is an
incredible woman who saw a need
in the world today and decided she
could help make a difference.
Upon graduating from BFC in 2002,
Caitie went on to play basketball
for the University of Detroit-Mercy.
Caitie received a Bachelors of
Business Administration from the
University of Detroit-Mercy, while
on a full scholarship as a Division
I women’s basketball player, and a
Master of Public Policy degree from
the University of Michigan. Caitie
grew up and lived in the wonderful
mitten state until the age of 22 when
a family trip to Lebanon sparked a
previously dormant interest in travel
and development.
Caitie felt a need in the world when
she was selected to work on a
fellowship in Kampala, Uganda with
Global Alliance for Legal Aid while
attending graduate school. She
wanted to help make a difference in
the lives of these individuals, but also
teach others to make a difference.
This sparked the idea for IC3
Academy. Together with her friend,
Colin Salisbury, Caitie helped create
the IC3 Academy just over six years
ago. IC3 Academy was founded on
the mantra “I Can Create Change”
and is backed by the belief that
everyone has a purpose bigger than
themselves. IC3 Academy began over
six years ago as a 7-day intensive
conference to promote social change
by providing the tools and inspiration
to participants pursuing their dreams.
Conferences have been held in
seven locations on four continents
and alumni have come from over 20
countries.
Still operating with the mission to
provide the tools and resources
to individuals working to make a
difference, Caitie and Colin realized
that for some projects, a 7-day
workshop was just the beginning. IC3
Academy has expanded to provide
year-long training for adults including
mentorship and a diploma in social
innovation through the UN Mandated
University for Peace Centre for
Executive Education.
Caitie’s role as Director for the
IC3 Academy includes facilitating
workshops and conferences
around the world and designing
the curriculum accompanying the
Meaningful Summer opportunity
for high school seniors and
undergraduates.
In addition to working with IC3,
Caitie also continues to help those
that are less fortunate by helping
to organize and lead international
trips, including traveling to Cusco,
Peru through the Global Volunteer
Network Foundation’s Eat So They
Can Distribution trip. She also led
18 graduate students to Yangon,
Myanmar to study international
economic development with the
International Economic Development
Program through the University of
Michigan. Most recently, Caitie worked

teachers she had while
at BFC. The following
is an excerpt of Caitie’s
speech.

“Not once, in any place I’ve traveled
has anyone asked me how many
points I scored in high school or how
many state championships I won
on the soccer team. No one ever
asked me if I got an A in my Honors
Literature class or how good I am
at Calculus. What people will want
to know is your Ubuntu, or how you
demonstrate your faith. Your Catholic
education is setting you up for your
Ubuntu: to be a generous, hospitable
friendly and compassionate person.
Your Catholic education is challenging
you to live a life of successful service
whether it be the head of your
own business, a highly regarded
surgeon or the best auto mechanic
in Michigan. All of these career paths
are valuable and necessary to make a
community work.”

A Very Foley Proposal
When JD Michoski ’07 asked Lauren Zaleski ‘07 to be his girlfriend in the Bishop
Foley Catholic High School gym in March of 2005, he had no idea that Foley would
play such a big role in his relationship! Nearly ten years after asking Lauren to be
his girlfriend, JD knew he was ready to take the next step, and he knew just where
to do it. He contacted BFC and asked if he could propose to Lauren in the same
spot he asked her out – the BFC gym. Members of Foley staff were more than
excited to help with JD’s romantic plan! On the night of December 13,
2014, JD took Lauren out to a nice dinner and she figured it was just
going to be another date night for the two of them. Little did Lauren
know that JD had quite the surprise up his sleeve.
JD blindfolded Lauren and drove her to Foley. She had no idea where
they were when he stopped the car and helped walk her into the school!
He brought her to the center of the gym, where he finally removed her
blindfold, and got down on one knee. Lauren could hardly believe what
was happening and she of course said yes!
JD and Lauren are now planning a May 2016 wedding. The bride-tobe
works as a Wellness Account Manager at Quest Diagnostics, while
the future groom is a Radar Systems Engineer at Delphi. The BFC
community would like to extend their deepest congratulations to JD and
Lauren and were so happy they got to be a part of their special night!

her husband, Aaron, welcomed

married Michael Harnadek on
January 17, 2015. Katelynn
obtained her BA in Elementary
Education with a ZA in Early
Childhood Education from

2009. She is now teaching prekindergarten

currently working on her Master’s

Jessica Bieber earned her BS
in Hotel Management & Tourism
from Grand Valley State University
in 2012. Through Grand Valley’s
program, she quickly secured
a position with White Lodging,
which owns many hotels
internationally. She was recently
awarded the Excalibur Award and
currently works as the Assistant
GM at a Marriott in Grand Rapids.

Logan Nabozy graduated from
Hillsdale College this spring with a
degree in Spanish and International
Business. He traveled to Denmark
in February to participate in an
internship where he worked to
teach English to students. After
graduating, Logan plans to pursue
an opportunity working with
AmeriCorps in the Western United
States and the Peace Corps after.
