FILM SERIES“Remembering Frederic:The Genius of Chopin”By Pamela HowlandDocumentary FeatureSeptember 8 – 7:30 PMOAC Little Theater $7.50 – General seatingTickets are available through the OAC Box OfficeService fees may apply“Sometimes, classical music can feel like a select clubthat so many people don’t feel a part of,” Howland said.“The goal with this movie was to say, ‘You don’t have toknow a thing. You’re going to come away hopefully beingentertained and you’re going to learn something.’ “Pamela Howland, a pianist who teaches at WakeForest University, specializes in introducing FredericChopin (1810-1849) and his music to the masses. Thisis a worthwhile effort, and “Remembering Frederic”shows just how adept she has become at explainingChopin’s music in accessible terms. The film, Howland’s first, gives us an often-vivid sense of themany forces that shaped Chopin’s genius. This derives from new footage of Chopin’s Polish andFrench worlds, all shot by an able team of local filmmakers that she assembled for the project. Italso comes from European and American experts speaking knowledgeably on several subjects, from Chopin’s illnesses to his relationship with George Sand, the famed writer. “RememberingFrederic” makes spare-but-effective use of excerpts from “Notorious Woman,” a MasterpieceTheatre series that won Rosemary Harris of Winston-Salem an Emmy® for her portrayal of Sand in1976. Howland plays Chopin’s music beautifully throughout the film.A Q & A session will be held after the film with the filmmaker, Pamela Howland.Bonsai People – The Vision of Muhammad YunusBy Holly MosherDocumentary FeatureJanuary 18 – 7:30 PMOAC Little Theater $7.50 – General seatingTickets are available through the OAC Box OfficeService fees may applyThis fascinating documentary focuses on the philosophies and social businesses of Nobel PeacePrize winner Laureate Muhammad Yunus. As their businesses grow, and they pay back their loans, they can take outmore and more. A musical set at the beginningof the century, written in the middle, andperformed for you shortly after the endof the last…to me there is somethingalmost sacred about Oklahoma. It isShakespeare, Chekhov, Hugo, Stoppardand Mozart all wrapped up in oneglorious pair of brown, leathery chaps. It’s all in there—all the passion, joy, pain, and hardship of the early settlerslives. Spoken and sung words, music, dancing, and orchestrations thatfor the first time blended into oneartistic whole. According to theatrecritics and historians around theworld--not only is ‘Oklahoma!’ themost important of the Rodgers andHammerstein musicals, it is also thesingle most influential work in theAmerican musical theatre. It is thefirst fully integrated musical playand its’ blending of song, character, plot and dance still serves asthe model for Broadway showstoday—some 70 years later.Based on Lynn Riggs’ 1931 play, Green Grow theLilacs, and set in Oklahoma Territory outside thesmall town of Claremore in 1906, the main narrativestrand of the musical concerns Laurey’s choice ofa partner for the box social. Will she go with Curly, the cowboy, or with the moody loner Jud Fry, thehired farmhand? That choice, and indeed thatrivalry, between the cattle ranchers and the farmingcommunity — expressed in the rousing Act IIopener, “The Farmer and the Cowman (Should BeFriends)” — reflects what Trevor Nunn once called“the historical inevitability” of the musical andindeed what actually happened once this IndianTerritory became a new state in the Union. Asked bythe Daily Telegraph to explain what first drew him toOklahoma!, Nunn said, “It’s pure and simple and ‘folk,’but very profound. These people find themselvessettling in God’s acre, in a kind of paradise. They32 Oconomowoc Arts Center | 12-13 Seasonmust decide who is going to live there and on whatterms. It’s a kind of turbulent question. There’s a wargoing on, a war about fences between the cowmenand the farmers. It’s a nervy time.” Something wecan surely all identify with in a politically dividedstate and country during an election year. This contest between the farmer and thecowman is later refined into pure theatre magicat the end of Act I, when an amazing balletsequence — first staged in the 1943 premiereby the legendary Agnes de Mille — takes usinto the interior emotional world of courtship, seduction, and obsession in the love triangle.I know you will ADORE this show-stoppingmoment in the OHS Players production this fall!Above all, though, “Oklahoma!” is about all thingsNEW. It is about a new dawn for a new love, a newschool, a new frontier, and a new state. This burstingsense of change is what characterizes our production, and it couldn’t come at a more appropriatetime, because along with each new change in lifecomes a renewed sense of hope—and we certainlycould use a heaping helping of that in our worldtoday. At the end of the musical, the entire cast beginsto sing: “We know we belong to the land, andthe land we belong to is grand.” I am reminded eachtime I witness this moment that the more thingschange—the more the really important things—family, love, faith, and that hope for a better futurestay the same. Thank God for that.So when your eyes travel across our beautifulArts Center stage, and you see the hopeful glintof promise in each of the characters faces in attendanceat the final wedding feast, rememberthat you are witnessing no less than the birth ofa nation. This is the power and the glory of “Oklahoma!,”and it remains as potent a statement ina world that has changed in so many ways aswhen the show gave so much joy to so manypeople on both sides of the Atlantic during andafter the Second World War.Americans still have plenty to be proud of, and Ibelieve “Oklahoma!” reminds them why.“Oklahoma is a pleasingly polished, high-energyhoe-down...leaves you humming long after you’veleft the theater.”-- TheatreManiaDon’t miss the OHS Players fall production of—OKLAHOMA!
