Flexo or gravure printing forme?
The early stage costs in the flexo and gravure printing from the point of view of the
repro and printing forme manufacturer Saueressig.

The company Saueressig, Vreden/Germany, exclusively uses digital manufacturing
procedures for the production of the listed flexo and gravure printing formes. The
basis for the following details and assumptions, are internal experimental values,
production data, customer information and the personal assessment of the
management.
For the decision-making for one manufacturing procedure, the qualitative and
economical demands on the product are to the fore. The election of the printing process
and therefore also the decision for a technology of the printing forme manufacturing, are
only made by the printer or the brand manufacturer regarding to the experience of
Saueressig. In this occasion the forme manufacturer takes the function of service and
advice.
Relating to the production course, the company produces gravure as well as flexo
printing formes in different types. Therefore a change between the both printing
processes is possible without problems in this company.
Today the job sequences in the reproduction and thus also the costs for the gravure and
flexo printing are roughly equal. The reasons for the costs approach are arranged in the
use of same hard and software and in the workflow which is composed of it. Therefore,
they talk also about the “digital central reproduction” on the market today. A cost
influence arises of the quality claims for the proof technology (e.g. cromaline, Iris or HPproof)
respectively used.
In the flexo printing, we distinguish between the following printing formes:
Photopolymeric flexo printing formes
- Plates.
- splitting of the processes
- effort for assembly at the printer
- costs are distributed on the printing forme manufacturer and printer.
- Endless sleeve (e.g. Digisleeve).
- provided with pre-assembled plate.
- can be used at the printer without further effort of assembly.
- short make-ready times
