In 2011, the Painting and Decorating Contractors
of America (PDCA) continued to focus on the
needs of the membership. In doing so, PDCA
ended an 11-year slide in membership by growing net
membership more than 15% from the prior year. As
a member-focused organization, growth means new
ideas, new leaders, and new resources to continue this
momentum.
Many members are experiencing slight increases in
projects and bids. Government statistics underline
small pockets of economic recovery. Although no
large, noticeable activity was seen in the commercial
or residential construction sectors, many PDCA
members’ marketing and advertising efforts may now
be paying off.
In an effort to reflect the technological and generational
shifts taking place in the workplace, PDCA
continues to apply resources to broadening the use of
technology in the delivery of education, the support
of the volunteer leader base, and dissemination of
important membership information.
These online initiatives were most visible in the new
PDCA website launched in July. The website now
sits atop the PDCA database and allows greater and
simpler use for PDCA members and leaders.
MEMBERSHIP: There was a very strong push in
2011 to increase membership, resulting in a net increase
of 275 members. PDCA National staff sought
out prior members with invitations to re-join. The
PDCA National Champions participated in the Free
Trial Membership Program by distributing
applications through their respective sales representative
networks. Local units throughout the country
also promoted membership through the Free Trial
Program.

tions were increased, significantly reducing overall
printing costs. The PDCA Board of Directors
approved the endorsement of American Painting
Contractor as the official magazine of PDCA. PDCA
National staff continues to receive feedback from
members and leaders regarding all PDCA membership
benefits and communications.
UNIT SUPPORT: Providing support to volunteer
leaders is key to the ongoing programming success
and growth of PDCA. PDCA Chair Darylene Dennon
organized and initiated a monthly leadership conference
call to provide feedback and quality control to
PDCA National staff regarding existing and impending
programs and services. A leadership e-weekly
newsletter was created for dissemination of important
leadership information. PDCA National produced
promotional banners and printed collateral material
for units to increase promotion and recognition of
PDCA membership benefits at local events.
PARTNERSHIPS: Industry relationships continued
to grow and flourish in 2011. More than a dozen
new National Associates were added to PDCA’s
membership rolls, and PDCA’s National Champions
(Benjamin Moore Paints, Glidden Professional
and Sherwin-Williams) also renewed their commitments
and involvement with PDCA. Richard Greene,
PDCA’s CEO, was invited to deliver a presentation
at the American Coatings Association in the fall of
2011, and PDCA continued to build relationships
with industry-related organizations such as IDAL,
NGPP and NARI.
ADVOCACY & ETHICS: In an effort to protect
the PDCA brand and the proprietary use of
the PDCA logo by members, PDCA National staff
aggressively pursued contractors illegally using and
referencing the PDCA brand. This resulted in several
new memberships. PDCA continues to monitor and

comment on the EPA RRP ruling and other efforts
that negatively impact the industry and PDCA members.
EDUCATION: PDCA Contractor College monthly
webinars were initiated in 2011, designed to provide
opportunities for members to hear presentations
from industry and business experts. More than 200
attendees registered and participated in five webinars,
which are archived and available on the PDCA website
for future reference.

In March, more than 400 industry contractors and suppliers
gathered in Orlando, Fla., for the 2011 Painting
and Decorating Expo, a PDCA-only convention and exhibition.
Attendees participated in more than 30 educational
classes, visited the two-day vendor exhibition, and
had fun at the evening receptions provided by the three
National Champions.
In conjunction with authors Malcolm Parvey and Deborah
Alston, PDCA also produced “The Definitive Guide
to Government Contracts.” The authors attended the
Expo, where copies of the book were made available to
attendees.
GOVERNANCE & OPERATIONS: In the fall, the
PDCA Board of Directors approved new minimum
standards for Councils and Chapters that include required
annual meetings, as well as timely submission of
compliance and financial documentation information. A
new database and accounting system were implemented,
allowing for greater transparency and accessibility of
membership data to local leaders.
2012 FOCUS
Get Better. Get Smarter. Get Business.
The main focus of PDCA resource allocation in 2012
will be directed towards the promotion of increased
participation in PDCA activities. This includes providing
additional tools to local unit leaders, as well as
increased communications with members. Over the last
three years, membership benefits have been improved
and new benefits added. In 2012, PDCA National staff
will work diligently to inform members of the value of
membership through participation in educational programming,
upgrading findapainter.com profiles, and the
use and implementation of PDCA Industry Standards.

You the Member
First, I want to thank all the members who mentored me through my 30 years in
PDCA. I am here because of your efforts and guidance. Thank you.
As a member of PDCA, you wear many hats:
• First, as a contractor trying to make your business succeed;
• Second, as a Chapter member, trying to accomplish things you can’t do alone;
• Third, as a member of a Council and Chapter, working collectively to address
the problems in the state
• Finally, as a member of PDCA National, supporting an organization that
is dedicated to educating and protecting your rights, and hosts events that
bring us together for the betterment of the industry.
That being said, what do you need to do to get the most out of PDCA?
Associate. Participate. And, most importantly, share your knowledge with others. Be a mentor and a leader at
whatever level you choose to participate.
Thanks to Richard Greene and his dedicated staff, PDCA is once again a vital part in the growth of your business.
You can take pride in your national organization – it’s making changes with you, the member, in mind.
Your dues dollars go to support every level of PDCA. Get involved again and help PDCA take itself to the next
level.
I am going to ask a favor of you, the members: be proud of your association, learn what it has to offer, participate
at the local level, make your Council viable, and attend and participate in the education programs and leadership
training.
I am certain once you avail yourself to what PDCA can do, you will promote PDCA at all levels and become a
mentor, because you have a lot to offer your fellow contractors.

PDCA’s A. E. Robert Friedman Scholarship Fund
For more than 30 years, PDCA has been able to award scholarships to deserving students because of the A. E. Robert Friedman
Scholarship Fund. The Fund was formed in 1978 to honor Bob Friedman on the occasion of his 40th anniversary as legal counsel for the Painting and
Decorating Contractors of America. He served in that capacity until 1981.
The Scholarship Fund is open to any high school senior or college-age student seeking to further their education. Rules can be found on the PDCA
website at www.pdca.org. The nomination letter must come from a PDCA member in good standing and include the student’s name, address, age and
telephone number, the level of schooling to which the award will be applied (i.e. college, graduate school), and the name of the school or institution where
he or she has been accepted or enrolled.
PDCA Education Foundation
In 1984, as PDCA prepared to celebrate its first 100 years as a national association, Benjamin Moore & Company presented PDCA with a gift of $10,000.
This gift was used to establish a foundation whose purpose would be to provide ongoing educational programs for contractors in the coating and wall covering
industry. In 1986, PDCA formally established the PDCA Education Foundation as a 501(c)3 organization. The Foundation has funded the production
of many PDCA programs and publications, including The Hazard
Communication Manual, Cost & Estimating Guide, and countless estimating seminars. All programs and publications have been produced with the
Foundation’s original intent: to upgrade the industry through continuing contractor educational opportunities. The Education Foundation has played a
significant role in funding the PDCA Contractor College and Accreditation programs.
