40% of people with cancer have radiation as part of their treatment plan. 65-‐100% of patients receiving radiation experience CRF (10) . Radiation can cause cumulative fatigue and this can occur regardless of treatment site. CRF usually lasts from 3-‐4 weeks after treatment stops, but can continue for up to 2-‐3 months or sometimes indefinitely.
Questionnaires and blood samples from 15 prostate cancer patients receiving EBRT at 7 time points. Human Mitochondria RT Profiler PCR Array was used to identify differential regulation of genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis and function. 11 genes related to mitochondrial function and structure were differentially expressed. Of these 11 genes, 3 were up-‐regulated, and 8 were down-‐regulated. 8 genes (AIFM2, BCL2, FIS1, IMMP2L, MSTO1, SLC25A23, SLC25A37, SLC25A4) were associated with changes in fatigue scores. Suggests 8 mitochondrial function genes were associated with fatigue in prostate cancer patients during EBRT. These findings identify possible pathways and early biomarkers for targeting novel interventions for CRF.
