Methods used to develop this guideline● MEDLINE/MEDLINE In-Process● NHS EED● PsycINFO.Again, any relevant economic evidence arising from the clinical searches was alsomade available to the health economist during the same period. The search strategies were initially developed for MEDLINE before being translatedfor use in other databases/interfaces. Strategies were built up through a numberof trial searches, and through discussions of the results of the searches with the reviewteam/GDG, to ensure that all possible relevant search terms were covered.Reference ManagerCitations from each search were downloaded into Reference Manager and duplicatesremoved. Records were then screened against the inclusion criteria of the reviewsbefore being quality appraised. The unfiltered search results were saved andretained for future potential re-analysis to help keep the process both replicable andtransparent.Search filtersThe search filter for health economics is an adaptation of a pre-tested strategydesigned by the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (2007). The search filteris designed to retrieve records of economic evidence (including full and partialeconomic evaluations) from the vast amount of literature indexed to major medicaldatabases such as MEDLINE. The filter, which comprises a combination ofcontrolled vocabulary and free-text retrieval methods, maximises sensitivity (orrecall) to ensure that as many potentially relevant records as possible are retrievedfrom a search. Full details of the filter are provided in Appendix 8.Date and language restrictionsSystematic database searches were initially conducted in January 2010 up to the mostrecent searchable date, with the final re-runs carried out in September 2010. After thispoint, studies were included only if they were judged by the GDG to be exceptional(for example, the evidence was likely to change a recommendation).Although no language restrictions were applied at the searching stage, foreignlanguage papers were not requested or reviewed unless they were of particularimportance to an area under review. All the searches were restricted to researchpublished from 1995 onwards in order to obtain data relevant to current healthcaresettings and costs.Other search methodsOther search methods involved scanning the reference lists of all eligible publications(systematic reviews, stakeholder evidence and included studies from the economicand clinical reviews) to identify further studies for consideration.Full details of the search strategies and filters used for the systematic review ofhealth economic evidence are provided in Appendix 8.53
