Four New Scholarships
Awarded for 2007-2008

Marina Iyerusalimets (above), Everett,
is the very happy first recipient of the
Campus School Legacy Scholarship
for student teachers. Marina embodies
the ideals of the Campus School environment
– rapidly excelling in a different
education system through self-motivation,
creativity, and a positive attitude.
Marina was born in the Ukraine and
immigrated to Everett with her family
at age 9.
The Campus School Legacy Scholarship
was endowed this August by alumni of
the Campus School at Western during
their second reunion. It will provide
tuition and fees for one student a year
during the full-time student teaching
term, when the most help is needed.
Alayna Gagnier, Seatac, is the first recipient
of a new scholarship made possible
through a donation by M. Maureen
Fairfield.
Gagnier is enrolled in the M.I.T.
Secondary Education Program in Seattle.
The financial assistance from this scholarship
has helped her restart her career
teaching English to second language students
in a Seattle high school. She has
previous training in special education.
Andrew Michel, Puyallup, is the first
recipient of the Inspired for Teaching
Excellence Scholarship. Andrew is
a 2006 graduate of Rogers High School
in Puyallup, after which he spent five
months in Kenya teaching in the second
largest slum in the world.

The Inspired for Teaching Excellence
Scholarship will be awarded annually
to one entering freshman from
Washington who possesses a passion for
making a difference through teaching in
P-12 schools. It provides full tuition and
fees and is renewable until graduation
with demonstrated excellence in teacher
preparation. Funding for the scholarship
was made possible through a very generous
gift from Dennis Madsen, a member
of Western’s board of trustees and
avid supporter of Woodring College’s
students.
Renato “R.J.” M. Rongcal Jr. (pictured
below) is the first recipient of the
Marilyn F. Nold Scholarship. Rongcal
is a senior who plans to teach in the elementary
grades in Bellingham and pursue
a master’s degree in English.
The Marilyn Nold family and
Bellingham-based Madrona Bay Real
Estate Investments established the scholarship
to provide housing assistance to
one student a year pursuing teacher certification
through Woodring College of
Education. The scholarship, named in
memory of educator Marilyn F. Nold,
enables a student in the College to live
rent free for three academic quarters.
Recipients are selected by Woodring and
the Nold family.

“Our family is very excited about this
opportunity to give back to the teaching
profession,” said Claire Nold-Glaser.
Marilyn Nold was an elementary teacher
and spent many years teaching and
substituting in Puyallup, Seattle, Port
Angeles and Stanwood.
“Marilyn Nold was a dear and beloved
family friend,” said Morgan Bartlett,
president and owner of Madrona Bay
Real Estate Investments. “As I grew up,
Marilyn always welcomed me into her
home as part of her family. The opportunity
to work with the family to honor
Marilyn, and give back to the teaching
field that Marilyn was a part of is the
least I can do.”
Through the generosity of Woodring
supporters - $123,430 was awarded in
scholarships to Woodring students for the
2007-2008 academic year. This does not
include the value of in-kind donations,
such as the Nold Scholarship.
All scholarship applications are screened
and rated by faculty committees. Awards
are made based on committee recommendations.
