Fatigue Management Currently ► Standard Hours – default option prescribing minimum rest and maximum working hours ► Basic Fatigue Management (BFM) – allows additional working hours while imposing increased fatigue management and compliance responsibilities on operators ► Advanced Fatigue Management (AFM) – allows more flexible working hours based on risk management, alternative compliance and quality assurance approaches ► Western Australia and the Northern Territory have not adopted the new fatigue laws and regulate fatigue under OH&S laws
Fatigue Management – cont. RIS Proposal (expert panel recommendations) The Panel recommends that instead of an outer limit for driving hours under AFM, an improved national risk management system be developed which would offer: ► Greater flexibility for industry by having better access to a more transparent, simpler, more readily available and less costly system ► Governments will have more confidence from a simpler, more reliable and more consistent approaches to fatigue management which enables risks to be managed responsibly ► Fatigue experts more oversight in the system
