Fuel Treatment Requirements<strong>Lawrence</strong> <strong>County</strong> requires fuel modifications and maintenance be performedto comply with the <strong>Lawrence</strong> <strong>County</strong> subdivision ordinance. When required, thesetreatments may be completed in phases as outlined in the ordinance. Landscapetreatments refer to overstory thinning which reduces the risk from crowning andtorching fire behavior. Surface and ladder fuel modification within the survivablespace of buildings will occur during individual parcel development.The following prescription is recommended for all fuel modifications in <strong>Lawrence</strong><strong>County</strong>:1. For the entire project area (e.g. ½ mile WUI zones):A. Conifer canopy spacing shall be separated by an average of 20 feetdepending on forest conditions. Additional mitigation measures may berequired because of fire hazard in the following area:1. Where hazardous topography exists. (Greater than 8% slope onsouth or west aspects) conifer canopy spacing shall be increased to 25to 30 foot; or2. Where a specific fire threat is identified.B. All surface fuels must be removed or treated.C. Ladder fuels under trees within the fuel modification area shall bemaintained at a height that will preclude ground fire from spreadingvertically into the conifer canopy.2. In the survivable space of the home site:A. All conifer canopy spacing shall be maintained at an average of 20 feet.B. All surface fuels must be removed or treated.C. Ladder fuels under trees within the fuel modification area shall bemaintained at a height that will preclude ground fire from spreadingvertically into the conifer canopy.3. In the area extending to the road right-of-way from a road:A. All conifer canopy spacing shall be maintained at an average of 20 feet.D. All surface fuels must be removed or treated.B.
