It is the story of a young and beautiful girl that is deprived of a normal childhood by her mother and achieves Broadway and Hollywood stardom before she is twenty then endures sixteen years as an alcoholic before she is able to overcome her malady and start a new life. The portrayal of Lillian Roth ejves SUSAN HAY- WARD the best dramatic role of her career. Another standout perform-^ ance is by JO VAN FLEET, cast as Katie Roth, the mother eager to give Lillian the security and comforts she never had in her own life.
