create the illusion ot widening
a room that appears too^
narroWj or simply better proportioning
any room.
To shorten a room thai
seems too long, one can use
contrasting Ught and dark
tiles, and by varying their
patterns achieve the idea of
narrowing an over - wide
room. Standard nine-inch
square tiles, can be used.
To separate two areas, two
different colors of tile can be
used. For example, dogwood,
pink and charcoal with a
touch of pink have proved
particularly popular recently.
THERE'S news-in plaster.
You wouldn't expect it, because
10 years ago the dry
wall substitutes for this prosaic
building material were
supposed to be putting pla.ster
out of business
3ut in spite of the bragging
by inventors and builders
who were g'oing to save
home buyers great sums by
making walls out of everything
^ from packed mud to
masticated grocery boxes,
plasterers just kept on trowelling.
Today you can get accoustical
plaster that soaks up
sound like a sponge absorbs
water. You can get predecorated
pleister to give your walls
a permanent tint that won't
wash off or wear off — eliminates
painting.
You can use quick drying
plaster to shortcut the usual
waiting period for final decoration.
Or you can still rely
on the tried and tested
three-coat plaster job that has
distinguished quality construction
for generations.
Gypsum, the main ingredient
of modem plaster, is
now being mined and quarried
at a rate of about 10,-
000,000 tons per year.
However, you'd wonder
how there could be enough
left for plaster, from the waj/^
this mineral is being used.
Hollywood uses is to simulate
snow. Farmers have been
using it for fertilizer ever
since Benjamin Franklin introduced
it for that use. It
goes into the making of face
powder, dental plates, poker
chips, bathroom fixtures and
polish for grave stones.
To meet this market, 10
jiew gypsum; plants are scheduled
to be established this
year, although the stuff is as
old as the Egyptians and is
only what we call plaster of
Paris.
Why do we keep on plas
tering walls?
The Gypsum Association
says it's because it helps to
give lifetime protection to
the value of your investmen..
in a home. You can redecor
ate over and over again —
as long as you can keep up
with a woman's amazing ideas.
