give. advocate. volunteerIowa city Free Medical Clinic/Dick Parrot fRee Dental ClinicAs a child, Kelly Lynne Johnson wanted to bea Jack-o-Lantern. She was always mesmerized bytheir smiling faces, bright eyes, and general welcoming glow.People are drawn to Kelly’s energy in the same way – she is always ready tooffer a hug and genuine smile, and makes those around her feel welcomed.Kelly has been volunteering at the Iowa City Free Medical Clinic since the olddays, when it was located in the basement of the Wesley Center. She was still ateenager then, but staff immediately warmed to her dedication to volunteerismand her bubbly personality. While completing her undergraduate studies inTheater at the University of Iowa, Kelly began her FMC volunteer career asa Patient Guide. She dove right in, learning to check vital signs and interviewpatients, and soon developed a strong rapport with both patients and staff. After she learned the ropes as a Patient Guide, Kelly was recognized as aneffective leader and was trained as a Clinic Coordinator. For years, she has beenvolunteering at least once a week during our daytime and evening clinics. As aCoordinator, she works closely with staff and volunteers to maintain a smoothlyrunning, organized clinic. Working in the heart of the clinic, a perfect storm ofvolunteers and clients circulates around Kelly, directed by her experience. Shemaintains a steady flow of patients in and out of rooms and communicatespertinent information to volunteers and staff. She remains calm in the midst ofthis sometimes-chaotic environment, and completes her duties with her ownunique flare. She connects with each patient on a personal level, and lets themknow they are valuable, though she only spends a few moments with each one.She even gives out stickers and books to children in the waiting room.As another volunteer said, “Kelly is always happy and smiling, and it’s contagious!”She takes her bright attitude to the myriad of community activities in which she’sinvolved. You may know her from Women at Iowa, the show she used to host on UITV,or her roles in previous Vagina Monologue ➤and theater performances, her time representing the Avoid the Stork Campaign, or as a long-time friendly faceat T-Spoons.During the past year, Kelly has been going even further above and beyond as a volunteer. She’s in her second yearof studies at the Carver College of Medicine, but she still finds time to volunteer beyond her regular weekly shifts. She helped represent the clinic at the Doc Dash fund raiser last year. She went through a competitive applicationprocess to become a member of our small Board of Directors. She’s actually counting down the months untilshe’s eligible to be a patient examiner at the Clinic. Kelly clearly thrives on assisting those around her. She is aprime example of someone who will be a lifelong volunteer, always eager to serve her community and supportthose around her. n2440 Towncrest Drive, Iowa City, IA 52244MISSION:Iowa City Free Medical Clinic/Dick Parrott Free Dental Clinic is a private nonprofit corporation, providing access to health care to the underserved in Johnson County by eliminating financial, social and language barriers whenever possible.SERVICES:Iowa City Free Medical Clinic/Dick Parrott Free Dental Clinic (FMC) is an ambulatory medicalclinic.
