(HACAP)Dental infection, especially periodontal disease, has a significant impact on a person’s overallmedical conditions. Dental pain and infection is the most common reason people miss work.It can be extremely uncomfortable and in some untreated cases lead to death. It can alsoisolate people from society because of an unsightly personal appearance. Many residentsof Johnson County do not have dental insurance or cannot physically access a dental office. Our program provides dental care to those residents of Johnson County who cannot affordeven basic dental care and who would otherwise not have the opportunity to receive anycare. A little dental care has provided some pain relief, has reduced the chance of adverseeffects of their medical conditions, provided teeth for the toothless, smiling faces for some,an increased self-esteem and even provided job opportunities for others. Our agency has traditionally been composed of programs that work together to providedental services, as part of a training program by senior dental students in close supervision byGeriatric trained faculty from the College of Dentistry. The Geriatric Mobile Dental Programbegan providing dental care to the residents of nursing homes since 1980. The program wasdeveloped to meet an unidentified need for routine and preventive dental care for elderlyinstitutionalized persons. One major advantage of the Mobile Dental Program is that it takesdental care to the patient, thus avoiding the problem of transporting patients to a dentist’soffice. The Portable Outreach Program continues as an extension of our mobile dental program toprovide emergency services to various populations whose access to dental care is difficult. TheSpecial Care Clinic (SCC) is available at the College of Dentistry. It is a special dental clinicestablished to care for the complicated needs of the older and/or compromised adults. nAmy Correia received the Rozie Shermerhorn Award for her exemplary service to HACAPin a policy making capacity and as an advocate for low income people within our communities.Amy worked in the social service field for 22 years in Johnson County.
