Professional Life Corner16Mastering the Art of Teams and Team-Building:10 Tips for Top-Quality Teamworkby Randall S. Hansen, Ph.D.come from the leader of the team; all goalsshould be discussed by the entire team, especially in situations in which deadlineswill be tight.4 . Review Progress. Once goals havebeen set, the team frequently goes off tocomplete all the tasks to achieve its goal. This scenario is perfectly fine, except thatin too many instances, new information oractions can affect the goal’s completion. Thus, teams benefit from conducting regularcheck-ins with all team members --perhaps something as often as weekly -- toreview progress and iron out any wrinklesor overcome obstacles that have arisen.5 . Encourage Cooperation, not Competition.Despite being placed in teamswith co-workers competing with you foryour next promotion, you must find a wayto collaborate with every member of theteam. One of the worst labels in the workplaceis that of “not being a team player.”You will be plenty of time to showcaseyour personal accomplishments, but withoutyour cooperation, your team may notsucceed. Collaboration is a must.leads to new ideas and better decisions.Rather than feeling uncomfortable thatmost of the team does not look or act likeyou, celebrate their individual differencesand the value that each brings to the team.8 . Be Enthusiastic. Even if you generallyprefer to work by yourself, the reality youwill face is that teams in the workplace arehere to stay. One way to make the best ofthe situation is to jump into the team experiencewith as much enthusiasm as possible.Enthusiasm is contagious, so not onlywill your enthusiasm help you feel betterabout being a team member, it will leadother team members to also become moreenthusiastic.9 . Share the Work/Do the Work. Thebest teams are those in which each memberplays a vital part in work that resultsin superior performance; thus it is imperativethat each member not only feels heor she plays a vital role, but actually doesso. But sharing the work is only part of theequation. The other part is that once thework has been assigned, each team membermust be accountable to complete thetasks. Much has been written about the“free-rider” problem within teams, butwith individual accountability within theteam, people cannot hide from their teamresponsibilities.10 . Clarify Responsibilities to theTeam. Often one of the main causes ofteam members not completing their workis not because they are “slackers,” but becausethey simply do not understand theirrole on the team -- or the importance thattheir work will lend to the team. The keyhere is that each team member must totallyunderstand his or her role on the teamand responsibility to the team so the teamcan succeed.Final Thoughts on Team PerformanceYour work life will include individual andteam projects and assignments, and asyou move up the organization, the importanceof working well in teams -- andleading teams to success -- will gain moreand more value.
